Name your rivals
Easy. Name your home nation, then the nation that you consider your main rival & then name the nation you "love passionately" .
Scores will be collated and announced at the end of the evening.
Here's mine.

South Africa.
Main rival New Zealand.
No country I hate, but you could put Bruce under the category of dislike.

I thought England was Saffa's biggest rival, traditionally? I guess SA need a competitive rival so makes sense.

How can you hate a whole nation?!?!
Anyway, as an England fan the teams I see as our toughest rivals and always enjoy beating are:
France
Ireland
Austrailia
South Africa and New Zealand provide huge scalps but I personally get more satisfaction from beating the other 3.

Not sure about the term rival. NZ is obviously usually the biggest win, but in terms of natural opponent, Australia or France.
I don't hate anyone.

Probably biggest rivals are the Aussies..our shackle dragging cousins know and understand us better than anyone else.
But the team we most respect, dread, and anything else you want to call it( other than hate) is South Africa....

Don't hate other teams - I leave that crap to football fans. Probably enjoy beating NZ the most followed by the French but I certainly don't hate either of them and in general appriciate all other rugby playing nations.

As an England fan, our main rivalry has to be the French, followed closely by the Aussies. I know Wales and scotlands whole season can be made by beating England, but those games just don't do it for me.

Bless you sound so diplomatic and nice. I am so glad you have come on here to show how you are such fantastic human beings for letting us all know you don't "hate" anyone. Good for you.
I meant it in a rivalry sense and to dislike to sporting team. Not a country or an entire nation.
Man Utd hate Man City when they play each other etc etc..

New Zealand.
South Africa is the main rival followed up by Australia.
Hate's too strong a word. The team we can´t bear losing to apart from SA and Australia and that incredibly disruptive but equally impressive French team has to be England.
Rugby doesn´t have the fanatical support of football where hate comes into it based on the colour of your shirt.

My side, Wallabies
Dislike losing to the kiwis, boks and England more than any other sides, but never mind losing to the Scots cause I have a soft spot for them!
Though of course hate losing any game at all!!!! But if we have to as I said don't mind the Scots, or the game against the Irish in Ireland a few years ago when BOD scored in the last minute on his 100th game, a grand try for a very good player, that I didn't mind at all.

Re: Name your rivals
How does anyone hate a whole country?
Odd question. History is littered with it particularly in the northern parts.
Sport not necessarily so but still. Good to hear its on odd concept these days. Hope for us all.
I tend to agree with laurie. Oz understand the kiwi psyche better as we are in eachothers back yards in almost every sense of the word...sporting, culture, economy etc...nzers usually ending up second best across the board.
Whereas SA do their thing regardless. We have the highest respect, I just dont think we understand some of their motivations in doing stuff sometimes.
The campese and eales eras were times we were really under the gun.
SA as a playing nation are more dangerous as theyre more inward looking, preferring to close shop and do the job. Oz are optimists. Its in their nature. Get an inch...take a mile sort of thing. They have a never say die approach to all sport and for kiwis sometimes its very intimidating.
Anyway. Xmas hams up soon. Laptops going away for an hour or so.

Re: Name your rivals
Morning Taylorman, merry christmas.
The SA psyche is really a simple one. We believe unwaveringly in our own abilities, unfortunately to the point where our determination of our beliefs of doing things our way backfires some times.
It has come through centuries of having to fight for everything we want. There is no faltering in our beliefs, to the point where particularly in sport we are a step behind other leading countries in the way they have already realised that sport has different ways of being played, not just what is in fron of you.
Oh, of course then we also derail ourselves every now and then due to our political situation.

Support: England
Rival: France
And I suppose I take most displeasure in losing to Ireland (maybe because it happens so frequently now days and is just a cumulative thing). Nothing against the country or the people, but if we won just one game this year I'd want it to be the Ireland game.
If we beat Ireland a couple of times on the bounce then my "hated" (not a word I'd use) might change, but definitely the team I support and probably our biggest rival should remain in place permanently.

Hi ya Biltong,
Yes thats the part that worries me- the step behind thing. SA I believe have by far the most potential- one is the coaching/ realising the fulll sxv benefits which I think are the same issue, the other being the potential of the 'non-white' players where by generation the numbers will seep through to the upper levels through a sort of natural osmosis to a point where in 20, 30, 40 years or so the culture of the game in SA will look very different.
So for all of us while those wheels of change take a while to start turning we'll take what we can get.

Support the Wobblies, main rivals NZ and SA although losses to NZ seem to hurt more despite all the practice I've had at trying to come to terms with it. I don't know about 'love passionately' but I have a soft spot for P.I. teams.

It was either that or 'It was a game of 2 halves', another personal favourite. I always have a little side wager with the missus on post match interviews to see how many cliches they manage to rattle off but you can always bank on 'Full Credit to ...'.
Possible recipients of 'Full Credit to...' are, the boys, the lads, the guys, the coaching staff, the opposition, the crowd, my breakfast, etc... all good stuff.

I look forward to:
"yes well, we couldn't really be arsed, it was quite cold, one of the boys' missus has just dumped him and the rest of us took him to a strip joint last night to take his mind off things. Out hearts weren't in it you could say. Mind you the opposition were pants and the referee was awful as ever. Our crowd sounded as though they had a hangover and the pitch is Poopie. We could have pinched it if we'd have been bothered, but hey, there's always next week! The coach won't drop us as we actually did exactly what he wanted us to, even though he's a Cynthia..."

From: Ireland.
Rivals: Why talk about SH or even England and Wales as rivals when it's France that have scuppered so many of our Six Nations chances. They're the side that have perennially been in our way in the NH, that have stood between Ireland and top-dog position in Europe, and that makes them our biggest rivals.
The rugby nation I love most: - well, they happen to be the best too - New Zealand.
There is a side I least like (not close to hate) - and that goes back to a distinct period in the mid-00s when their then younger overly confident players spoke about Ireland's 'old' men. It lacked grace and mutual rugby respect and I remember it now and again when they play us.

Re: Name your rivals
I agree SecretFly, France are the bogey team for Ireland. Surprisingly, Scotland have got a few scalps off you home and away in the past decade but there´s no bickering like there is between you and Wales. It´s interesting how dynamics can change relations between fans.
The Springboks were the main foe for NZ and still are in my opinion. Their home record alone demands respect. But interestingly the younger fans don´t remember how SA used to have one over us and think Australia is the main rival. A few insecurities came over the fans in that semi final. That gloating at the end would never have happened against SA.
