Nadal to take February off
http://www.thenational.ae/sport/tennis/rafael-nadal-to-miss-dubai-duty-free-tennis-championshipsRafael Nadal decided to come to Abu Dhabi for the Mubadala World Tennis Championship only "three days ago" because a sore shoulder has hampered his preparations for the coming season.
He said he plans to take off the entire month of February to rest and practice and will not play in the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships at the end of that month.
"I didn't know if I was able to come here until three days ago," the two-time defending champion said today at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex. "I didn't know if I had enough practice. I practised as much as I can, but not as much as I like.
"Hopefully, the shoulder will be good. It's always exciting for me to be in Abu Dhabi. I hope I made the right decision to be here."
Nadal, the world No 2, is due to play in the semi-finals tomorrow against the winner of today's match between David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Nadal will play in Doha next week in the first week of the ATP season, and will play through the Australian Open, if his health permits.
He said he noticed pain in his left shoulder late in the 2011 season, and that it worsened markedly after he helped Spain win the Davis Cup early this month. He said he could not hit his forehand a week ago and has practised his serve only one day since the Davis Cup final.
"I have to stop after Australia and have a chance to practice," he said. "I need the February month to practice well to prepare for the rest of the season. The most important part of the season starts with Indian Wells [in March] and ends with Wimbledon, and this year it ends with the Olympics."
Sounds quite serious if he couldn't hit his FH a week ago.
2012 is an important year for Rafa with 2011 being dominated by Nole. If he does indeed take February off to get back to his best it sets up an exciting year ahead with him playing fit and at his best.

I would even suggest Djokovic taking breaks to preserve himself.
BTW, This reminds me of another player who manages his schedule very well.

So no love for HC.

Not sure about no love LF, just a preference for clay and grass.
Bit disconcerting to hear about injuries and rest already though. To already be thinking like that doesn't bode well for Australia.

The IW/Miami stretch is HC (sort of).

Absolutely. Nadal had a break before WTF, now a break before and after AO.
Will slams become Bo3 soon?
Wishing a healthy 2012 to all players is perhaps the order of the day.

Agreed LF. The notion of skipping February does not bother me, and could be regarded as sensible. However, seemingly needing to nurse himself through the AO despite plenty of rest is a worry.
It would be great to have a year of everyone being healthy, here's hoping.

Re: Nadal to take February off
I suppose this shows the importance of the Davis Cup to Rafael Nadal - especially when it's a final. It also shows that Del Potro is hitting the balls hard etc. Novak Djokovic also played through medical issues in the Davis Cup semi-final - saying he was only 60% fit but that this was still superior to a fit Tipsarevic or something. He was then out for a while with back issues / sore shoulder or something.

"Nadal will play the winner of a match between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer in the semi-finals on Friday.
He is hopeful his shoulder will hold up enough for him to win both the Abu Dhabi tournament for a third successive year, and next week's Qatar Open in Doha."

He played these tournaments last year too. In particular he should have pulled out of last years Qatar Open (excessive sweating syndrome due to fever with possible contributions from his sponsors new top shenanigans). At the time some speculated that he must have been getting paid a big tower of cash by the oil sheikhs (allegedly).

Re: Nadal to take February off
What exactly is Nadal missing by not playing in February? Rotterdam. The south American clay court season.
Federer was sensible by managing his schedule and missing the Asian tournaments at the end of this year and look how it payed off. The other players should be wary of a well rested Nadal when he plays what to him is the most important part of the season...

I agree hawkeye, Rotterdam he can live without. I am concerned, though, that he might not be fully-fit for Australia; as a fan I want to see him fully-fit for a tilt at the big titles in 2012.

Worrying for the AO.
Clearly, this being such a strong era and all, no player can turn up not fully fit and without proper practice/training and have any chance of winning a GS event
Seriously, it sounds like he knows he can't win it, but it going to show up anyway figuring he can probably get at least to the semis, and get the ranking points.

Re: Nadal to take February off
If his shoulder was that bad he wouldn't have played Abu Dhabi.
I think missing Feb is a good option:
-no important tournaments in Feb
-can rest and be fresh for clay season.

Showing up to a tournament when he knows his chances of winning are greatly reduced through injury/lack of preparation does show fighting spirit. Also shows he knows his own current state and how he can expect to fare against the majority of the field. And that he knows ranking points are important.
All of which are good traits for a tennis player to have.

Re: Nadal to take February off
The press seem to have misled people with their comments. This is what Nadal said:
"I've not been able to practise as much in December as normal but I feel much better and this is why I'm here, to practise with the rest of the players."

You can trust skysportsnews to not cowpat and make a bigger story out of it.

Re: Nadal to take February off
Another shameless excuse from Nadal, preparing the ground in case of a poor performance at the OZ.
How many times have we heard this BS before..
Look at me I'm injured.. but I'm such a soldier that I'm still gonna play and I'll rest a month later.
Boo hoo..
It's pathetic really.. can't believe people are so eager to support this nonsense. How can an elite sportsman have an injury of any significance and yet still play an exo tournament, a 250 and then a slam? Obviously this is either a phantom injury or completely insignificant. It's probably akin to the kind of pains or knocks that footballers feel when they take to the pitch.. ie after a few minutes of warming up it has no bearing whatsoever on their performance.
And wth is the point of making this announcement now? Why not just play the tournaments and then declare that you intend to take a month off? In fact why bother to announce anything at all? It's not as if Feb is a loaded month tennis wise.
Like I said, shameless injury excuses.. yet again. You'd think Nadal is the only player to enter the court with a twinge.. The rest must all be 100% perfect all of the time.. or maybe they just don't feel the need to make public pronouncements about their every twinge and ache. It's shameless and disrespectful to the rest of the competition.
The Nadull needs to grow some balls and act like a man.
