Do Tennis Players Have Enough Time Off?
I have just been watching Abu Dhabi and I have to ask do tennis players get enough time off during the off season? We all now know Nadal is taking February off. Given that Nadal played in the Davis Cup final on 2/3/4 December and is now playing in Abu Dhabi. Albeit it may not be a 'competitive' tournament, it would've given Nadal just 3 weeks rest. I, personally do not think it is enough time for him to recover and get the necessary rest. I would say the same for Murray, Djokovic and Federer had their season ended in a Davis Cup final too. I feel they need 6 weeks at least to recover. I think when you look at other sports, Football, Cricket, Rugby aside from International commitments have enough time off to recover. This season also contains the Olympics which will congest the tennis fixtures, makes it more important for the players to be able 'physically' to manage the season without the risk of burnout before the Hardcourt season in August/September.
How much time off do you think the Professionals need?

I think it is more a question of reducing the total number of mandatory tournaments the top players have to play. With the Olympics this year the schedule for the top players is going to be extra tight.

At the end of the day it's up to them how hard they want to play in each tournament.

ps This is an exhibition tournament. So players entering this tournament have to balance their yearly schedule and recovery period against a big pile of cash.legendkillar wrote:I have just been watching Abu Dhabi and I have to ask do tennis players get enough time off during the off season? ...
