First topic message reminder :

Joining a new forum can be a little bewildering. Often, you will notice that the existing members may seem a little 'cliquey', continuing long running 'in jokes' from time to time which are of little consequence or understanding to a new member. I know from experience that this can make you feel like a bit of an outsider right from day one, and cause you to lose interest.

The majority of the topics on 606v2 Cricket are very much cricket related, and as such I'd like to think it is an easy place to settle in to and get involved with, but familiarising yourself with fellow contributors may be a useful aid.

I've created this thread (at the request of our resident CorporalHumblebucket) as a place where members both old and new can tell everyone as much as they wish to about themselves, as a means of allowing new members to familiarise themselves with the existing, and likewise to introduce themselves to the 606v2 Cricket regulars.

So, each and every contributor to this section, feel free to tell us a bit about yourself. I'll start...

Location: Birmingham, England.
Age: 24
Occupation: Quantity Surveyor (yawn!)
Interests: Football (Aston Villa fan), cricket, boxing, fishing

County supported: Warwickshire
Favourite cricketers currently playing: Kevin Pietersen, James Anderson, Ian Bell, Dale Steyn
Favourite cricketers now retired: Shane Warne, Brian Lara, Andrew Flintoff, Adam Gilchrist
Best cricketing moment I've witnessed live: Shane Warne taking his 700th Test wicket at the MCG in 2007
Favourite venue: Edgbaston for the carnival atmosphere, MCG for the sheer size and sense of occasion
Venue I'd most like to visit, but haven't: Lord's (ashamedly so), for the history of the place, I need some of that!
What I love most about cricket: Everything about it, it truly is the King of games - the skill, the excitement, the grandeur and history
What I hate most about cricket: Daft delays getting the players back on the field after rain has stopped play, and the general lack of common sense amongst the games administrators at times!
Favourite Test series: Has to be the Ashes, but I do love the England vs South Africa Test series - always provide high entertainment and competitive Tests

Personal cricketing career: 1 year out of the game at the moment, medium pace bowler that wasn't too bad, and a horrific lower order slogger that hit a few fours and the odd six...
Best ground played at: Moseley CC
Bat used: Gray Nicolls Lazer

A little about me on 606v2: I will often be found loitering around the cricket or boxing boards of this site. I was a member of the old BBC 606 forum and decided to make the move over here after the announcement of its closure when I saw that many posters I was familiar with were doing so themselves. Since arriving here, I initially posted as a normal member before being made moderator of the cricket and boxing boards, and then being made an administrator after the other 3,600 members turned down the role. Thankfully, the amount of moderation that I have to actually do on the cricket board is minimal, and as such I can get heavily involved in the high quality debates that crop up on a daily basis. The locals here are friendly enough, but everyone should know that they only need to private message me if they've a problem, and I'll deal with it best I can.

Feel free to add any other information you feel necessary!

Thanks, and to our new members - you are most welcome!

BuLioli wrote:Well since I've joined, i might as well do the formal introduction and questionnaire!!

Location: Durham, England (though will probably be moving in a couple of months)
Age: 25
Occupation: PhD Student (in write-up mode!)
Interests: Athletics, cricket, tennis and boxing are the main ones. Everything else slightly less so

County supported: Sussex
Favourite cricketers currently playing: Eng - Ian Bell, Graeme Swann. Non-Eng: Vernon Philander, Daniel Vettori, Fidel Edwards
Favourite cricketers now retired: Brian Lara, Curtly Ambrose
Best cricketing moment I've witnessed live: 2006 england v Pakistan 3rd Test. Monty Panesar bowling Younis Khan with a beauty of a ball.
Favourite venue: Headingley - has almost everything a ground should have.
Venue I'd most like to visit, but haven't: Still haven't been to Chester-le-street (shameful i know!). Also Edgbaston. What I love most about cricket: Impossible to list specifics. Despite some downpoints, the game is still really healthy today.
What I hate most about cricket: The administrators and anyone who does bad scheduling of games (mostly too many games). Also Test series lengths need to be sorted - no 2 test series between major players please!
Favourite Test series: Is still the Ashes. And will be for many a year.

Personal cricketing career: Sadly haven't played for some years, but was formerly a member of Bromley Town and Old Bromelians CC. Leg cutters and leg-spin for bowling (which varied in spin as much as it did in quality!). Usually a tail-end batsman with little power (only ever hit 1 six), but have batted in most positions.
Best ground played at: The Nevill Ground at Tunbridge Wells (one of Kent's outgrounds). Beautiful surroundings, and a brilliant pitch to play on.
Bat used: Salix Whacker
Personal highlights: Being sent in at No.5 on a whim, shared a game-winning partnership of 75, of which i scored 19! Bowling-wise, taking 5 for 7 in a school match (where we successfully defended a total of 46!), and bowling to two Zimbabwe international players in a club match - figures after 2 balls, 0.2-0-10-0 which eventually became 7-0-28-3!
Personal Lowlights: As an U13 player at school, playing 8 matches and scoring ducks in 6 of them was disheartening in the extreme!
Famous cricketers met: Met Brian Luckhurst (England opener in the 1970s) at a junior cricket tournament.

Highly recommend getting down there for an England Test, Bulioli. A real carnival atmosphere, really gets the adrenaline going, particularly if we are playing Australia or South Africa. None of the grandeur of Lord's (though the new stand is very impressive), but it is the bull ring of English cricket.

There are a couple of french cricketers studying maths (I think - at least one of them is) at Durham. If you do maths you may have come across them (if you don't, and given by your admission you don't play cricket anymore you're unlikely to - their lives basically revolve around cricket).

Foxy Fowler is in charge of the centre of excellence there, well worth a chat if you see him anytime.

BuLioli, nice to see a fellow Durham student on the board! It really is a great city and University.

I've only met Graeme Fowler the once so far, when I went to sign up for the Uni side he handed me a form and asked me to fill it in. When I got to the box that said "Age grade cricket experience e.g. Junior Minor Counties" I thought I probably won't be seeing too much more of him in a cricketing capacity!

JD - you need to start milking the Eddie Barlow connection far more. Mention of that should have got Foxy to lift up his ears. Apart from me, no one else is going to do it for you - add it your 606 v2 CV as well! Wink

Btw, we're missing you on the Hall of Fame thread.

I lack the tact to subtley drop in the fact I knew Eddie into a conversation with Graeme! He'd probably expect more from my cricket ability then, and I would have to disappoint him. Very Happy

And I've had a busy few weeks with revision and exams this week but I finished today so I will look to have a read through a pile in! The debate has looked superb on Hanif and Miandad! Not too mention Peter!

Corporal, was there not a module on County Championship cricket in the 1800's on your course?! I am upset at them!

I'm not a cricket or sports historian per se, just that my PhD thesis looked at the role of sport in promoting pro-imperial sentiment within collaborating elites within the British empire, particularly in Ireland. So study of 19th and early 20th century cricket was a bit of a by-product.
Like Mike Selig, though, I do (or used to, at least), read a lot of books on the subject.

FFS - my PhD was spent mostly in a chemistry lab, with occasional trips to Cornwall to knock bits off Bodmin Moor for testing. If I'd known I could have spent 3 years reading Wisden and still come out with a Doctorate, I might have followed a slightly different academic career.

Still, could be worse - my brother spent his PhD getting insects to watch computer graphics, and his supervisor won an IgNobel prize for studying the reaction of locusts to Star Wars Very Happy

Fair enuff...

Not that much demand for geochemists who spend years not finding gold in Devon and Cornwall either. Ended up doing something a fair bit removed from what I expected. (besides loitering on message boards).

Ah I see there's another chemist on 606!! Though admittedly my time was not spent with many dangerous chemicals (Physical Chemist 4 life!). Cricket-wise at Durham - I played a few times for college (St Cuths), in indoor and outdoor competitions - didn't really distinguish myself in any of them!

Hi Hampo. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on Lancs in the coming months. In the existing county cricket section a few of us created a thread on Lancs - including a greatest ever Lancs team. I thought it was a reasonable effort given that virtually none of us had much specialist knowledge. So it would be good to have your input on all the burning topics, such as is Glen Chapple under-rated, etc....

Quite a confession from you. Not being a Lancs supporter but a Banking Advisor at the Halifax! Wink

I was interested by your references to Collis King. I paid tribute last month on the ''5 ODI innings of all time ...'' thread to the excellent role he played in the 1979 World Cup Final.

Post by rich1uk Sun Jan 22, 2012 5:13 am

probably dont post on this site as often as i should but may as well do an intro

location: sheffield but am actually scottish and previously lived in edinburgh
age: 44
occupation: Project Management
interests: big fan of most sports but cricket would always come first nowadays, i am a big baseball fan, me and kwinigolfer seem to have our own forum on this site to chat about baseball so thanks for that. i am also a bit of a gamer and been playing the new star wars mmo alot, probably too much since it launched a month or so ago and this has resulted in me not spending as much time posting.

county supported: dont really have a county as being brought up in scotland i have no geographical allegiances to any, but my early cricketing memories include watching somerset in the early 80s with botham, richards and garner so have always had a bit of a soft spot for them.

favourite cricketers currently playing: KP, anderson, sehwag, kallis
favourite cricketers retired: richards , garner, akram
favourite cricketing moment: i have to admit i haven't been to alot of live cricket so my favourite moments have to be from watching on TV. there are two ashes series that standout and very predictable i suppose but they are 1981 and 2005.
Venue i would most like to visit: one of my dreams has always been to follow and england tour to the caribbean, probably as much for the non-cricketting aspects as the cricket tbh.
What i love most about cricket: for me you cant beat test cricket, like others here i watch ODIs and t20 but dont really treat them as seriously as tests. what is so great about test cricket imo is how it can change and one great spell of bowling or one great innings can turn a match. its amazing how often i sit before the start of a days play thinking how crucial this next session is going to be depending on which team can "win" the session.
What i hate about cricket: i dont think cricket is run very well by the ICC and the ongoing fiasco about UDRS annoys me alot.
favourite series: has to be the ashes, as an england cricket fan nothing comes close tbh.

personal cricketing career: nothing beyond schoolboy cricket, similar to GG i had to choose between cricket and golf at a fairly young age and golf won.

me on 606v2: as i said in my intro i dont post here as much as i maybe could, i do use another forum which i wont mention. the only two boards i really visit here are the cricket section and the baseball section. like quite a few others i was a regular on the old BBC 606 and glad to see the outright racism and trolling that ended up polluting that board is not allowed here.

other info: i know for some it might seem strange for a scot to be following england but from a cricket perspective england was always the national team for the whole of the UK in my eyes. for all other sports i am a proud scot however! even tho we are crap at most of them these days.

Rich - I actually rememember a Scot captaining the England Test team in the early to mid '70s. Mike Denness. With a distinct lack of originality, he was nicknamed Haggis!

Hope to see you posting more on the cricket threads here.

Hey everyone, was told to introduce myself in this section also, so here goes. I'm a big cricket fan, since I heard Ireland beat Pakistan in 2007, and since then I've been hooked.

I follow Ireland in anything we do, my favourite batsman would be the classical players like Dravid, Sangakkara, Ponting, Yousuf, Misbah, Younis, Kallis. My favourite bowler is either Akhtar, Warne, Lee or Kyle McCallan.

I much rather see a guy score 71 from 157 balls on a pitch that's horrible than someone score 50 from 10 balls, my favourite shot has to be the cover drive, or on drive, or someone playing a in/out shot over cover with superb timing. Call me strange I'm becoming a huge fan of the cut shot if played properly(as in not through to the keeper Very Happy)

As my name says I'm a huge fan of Ed Joyce, and because of him I would follow Sussex. I love watching the English domestic games on Sky Sports, Nasser Hussain and Bumble rock, the only commentator I dislike is Athers, sorry to any Lancs fans here Sad

I think the best present day batsman is AB de Villiers, and best present day bowler is Dale Steyn, then I do think George Dockrell rocks, am I being too biased by saying he's a top class bowler?, Very Happy

While this is an English dominated forum I gather, I do like some English players also, since the WC I respect Strauss, he seems a proper gent. I'm also a big fan of Bell, KP, Swann, I won't mention that other batsman in Morgan Very Happy -

right that's me, so howdy all Cool...

I'm not a huge fan of KP but if I had to pick a player or two from England he would be one Smile...

Favourite Retired Players: Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist, Sir Ian Botham, Alec Stewart, Wasim Akram, Alan Border, Mike Brearley.
Favourite Ground: Lords
Favourite Cricketing Moment: England winning in Australia in 2010/11. An absolute dominating performance by us Poms!
Personal Cricketing Moment: Hitting a 56 unbeaten at school coming in at 6. Not been able to replicate that ever since.
What I love about Cricket: Test matches. The drama. The mini moments that change the course of matches.
What I hate about Cricket: The ongoing politics.
Best Ground Played at: Henfield. Can't remember the name of the ground. Decent pitch. Had something in it for bowlers and batters.
Worst Cricketing Moment: Claiming a catch which didn't carry. The partnership was 83 and we needed a breakthrough. The de Villers in me came out.
Bat Used: GM Halo

Yeah, we were real close, especially after he told me to stay on topic.

On another note, there seems to be little sense of humour around this morning.Members old and new - tell us about yourself... - Page 2 Idunno10

Talking about the two of them.

Kallis test average 56.78 Ponting 53.08 Pontings strike rate is .13 better

Kallis ODI average 45.26 Ponting 42.03 Pontings strike rate is .07 better

Kallis T20 average 35.81 Ponting 28.64 Pontings strike rate is .10 better

so no matter the format Ponting bats roughly 10 runs per 100 balls faster than Kallis, but then Kallis has a superior average to Ponting.

Not much between the two.

Does your work involve stats, biltong?

I'm not a big stats man but know that cricket is a sport that needs them unlike Football where we have opta stats. Biggest load of crap I've seen.

There are some financial calculations in my job yes, not really statistics, but I find in any sport there is a variable importance to statistical analysis.

They play a part but nothing like watching a player/team.

Stella, I find as I get older my memory isn't that great anymore, so I don't remember all the happening s in a match, usually only the ones I got angry about.

These days you can even get the commentary of the match wiht some usefull stats.

Billy, The only financial calculation my wife makes is the one where she comes to me to say she has achieved her target and wants more money.
