Are Superfights gone forever???
Contentious issue this but I remember when Tyson was about to fight Spinks, Hagler to fight Leonard, Leonard to fight Duran etc...everybody was talking about it......Hugely awaited spectacle by the whole community not just the Boxing one....even non-sports fans were interested!!
It was really back page and front page news and everybody had a prediction Boxing fan or not!!
Mayweather vs Manny isn't really a superfight as I believe superfighters transcend the sport....Holmes, Tyson, The fab four almost everybody knew who they were...
Sad as it seems a lot of people don't know who Manny and to a lesser extent Floyd is!!! It's not their fault really...PPv.....lot's of titles have killed interest with mainstream sports fans and the casual observer.....
Are Superfights gone Forever??? Sad...but I think they are!!!!

Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
Depends what your definition of a Superfight is. There are a lot of fights that may not interest some people but interest others
For me David Haye v Wladimir Klitschko was a Superfight because just about everyone I know was watching it and talking about it before and afterwards

I think mayweather manny transcends the sport, all your casual fans for mayweather and all the philippines watching for many thats a huge audience, even non boxing fans will watch that.
dont think you get much more off a superfight then that? so no

You think.....Just can't see five pages devoted to it in the newspapers.....
Just don't think these guys are big enough.......
Can't see it capturing the imagination....like big names could!!
Oscar-Floyd wasn't a superfight..
Hope you're ok shengy..

Changes from country to country Truss, over here Haye vs Wlad was a superfight while Mayweather vs Pacquiao would not be but in America you could say the reverse.

The above fights I mentioned didn't feature a Brit but were superfights over here...
So I disagree..
Superfights are big everywhere...Boxing is big..

Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
I'm not suggesting Boxing wise they shouldn't be in one...but boxing is at a different place now than what it was..
Now I know back in 87 Leonard-Hagler was closed circuit in your Country as well as others...I was over here visiting Joanne before Spinks and...Erred slightly when I said all the above fights to Ghosty as I was only a kid in Roxbury for Duran-Leonard so I can't really comment on that...
But Manny-May won't reach anywhere near those heights.

Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
of course it wont, the sport isnt as popular now as it was, due to ufc, promoters, etc etc
But to say it wouldnt be a super fight is untrue,, every forum, pub and workplace would be talking about it, so in my eyes thats a superfight

True but had De La Hoya toyed with/annihilated Hatton likeMayweather pacquiao then they would be known too.
Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
As I stated in my previous comment which Truss choose to ignore...Haye v Wlad attracted everyone I knew from boxing hardcores to casual fans to the football types. They all paid the £15-20 to watch it. It was a Superfight...maybe not on the levels of the old days...but still a Superfight

But Haye was British.....You had an interest no wonder it was big over here!!! Wasn't ignoring..couldn't be bothered responding to something so obvious!!!
They would be known too!!! I'm saying they are hardly known now outside the Boxing fraternity..

Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
Yes I agree super fights are over but Manny v Floyd is the only 1 remaining.
This topic really relates to the state of boxing itself and I think, taking into consideration all the factors that have ruined boxing, that we will never see boxing reach the heights it did before. Its over and we should except that.
I think boxing reached its peak like all things and is on the way down as natural.

wlad is a huge sell in Germany, 50k to every fight, that added to who at the time was a huge sell in the UK at the time(haye), smells of a superfight to me,, it transcend`s the sport,?
your argument is redundant, thats before I ask why you ignored my previous post.
better luck tomorrow, doesn't look like your getting any bites this evening.
Yes superfights are alive and well

Don't be pedantic now..steffy..
People are able to rebut Onetwo and all opinions are welcome but I disagree..
these guys lack the name recognition and don't get the juices going...for outsiders..
Bonafide great fight but like Sanchez-Gomez a big Boxing fight and not a super one..

Is there a rule on 606v2 that if the op gets it handed to him and just chooses not to answer, it should get pulled? I only spoke as it was ridiculous to start with.
cant have a debating forum if the op cuts and runs rather then answer the debate

I know a few people who are Welsh and Archaeologists and generally they get sent away to work, get put up in hotels or small B&Bs but come back on weekends. So a bit of both I think Truss

What's he talking about steffy????
Wlad and Haye are huge home fighters..How can you have a superfight that draws a blank in the Us..interest wise!!! Give it a rest..
Your argument is redundant a bit like yourself..

No need your point doesn't wash..
Wlad v Haye wasn't a superfight in the biggest market in the Boxing world..
Superfights like the ones I've mentioned where eagerly awaited everywhere (Boxing World)..ie..Big fights everywhere..
Capische..

Re: Are Superfights gone forever???
I've outlined my position in the thread....backed up my argument and I'm being controversial..
People should be less sensitive....Bonafide thread!!
seriously struggle with the notion as to how you can have a superfight when no one particularly gives a stuff in America as in Haye-Wlad!!!
May-manny will sell but it lacks the transcendency of other bigger fights like the ones mentioned..making it an inferior addition!!
Keep it clean..

!. Mayweather is top 10 atg...But his lack of exposure on TV over here has hurt is ability to interest and transcend.
2. It's a superfight in the boxing fraternity for sure and deserving of the title but it isn't a superfight as it won't garner the interest world wide say a Tyson-Spinks would....because Manny and floyd lack the name recognition...and they don't transend like a sugar ray, Hagler etc who were exposed to terrestrial audiences..
3. Manny isn't no 1 or is!! So what... Boxing is dying on its butt and there are few great fighters about!!!
All answered sunbeam......now give us a kiss and calm down!!

Hatton was British!! you telling me Manny has his name recognition over here??
Why should anybody outside Boxing care about a quality filipino they've probably never seen...
Superfights transcend as do superfighters....everybody knew who Tyson and Spinks, Leonard and Hagler were etc..
Like I said it's not Manny's fault... Titles have come to mean nothing...People can't see him on terrestrial tv....
Hatton was a Brit and as such was well documented on TV and other media in this country..

If someone beats your argument have the good grace to at least try debate with them or atleast have the decency to admit you may have to compromise..
Dont lower youself to the level you have
Maybe you would like to elaborate on why it`s not a super fight, rather then make your self look more childish and your thread less of a wind up attemp then it already is..

Just go and get a girlfriend..
for me it's not a superfight in the real sense of the term because both fighters don't transcend like superfighters do..
