Will Lewis's win over Vitali raise his ATG status.
First topic message reminder :
Lennox Lewis is an contentious issue with fans and critics alike. I have Lewis above Holmes in an all time heavyweight list but I know many will argue against that. Some experts don't even have Lewis in the top ten which I find dubious to say the least, but one fight might in future propel Lewis higher and thats his win over Vitali.
Now I know the fight ended controversially but he still won. Vitali can only complain about the finale to the fight but I had Lewis winning by a couple of rounds before the stoppage. People slate Vitali based on the names on his record and the state of the division that he has ruled for years now but in time I believe we will look back and rightfully recognise one of the most dominant heavyweight champions ever. So where do we rank Lewis's win over him???
Lets face it NOBODY has troubled Vitali in the ring since that fight. It was close, back and forth, but when have we ever said that about a Vitali fight since? So my question is if that win for Lewis will raise his profile, should it, and how do you rate it??

Well we will never know, I always find it pointless debating it, its such a strong subject and no one changes their mind. Personally I think Lewis beats him in a rematch, however I won't argue with someone who thinks Vitali wins.
However its a legit win and the stoppage was correct, that is pure fact.

Exactly. Riddick Bowe did though.
Khan take heed. Learn to fight properly on the outside.
Bowe was not a proper champ imo he ducked Lewis who destgroyed him in the amateurs and threw his belt in the bin one of the most shameful ducks in history.
Not a huge fan of Bowe but he acquired the title of 'proper' champion in an all out war with Holyfield, he like Holyfield and Tyson seemed to see Lewis as too high a risk but you do the man an injustice all the same.
YOu are aware of the issues regarding why Lewis got step aside money right? It happens all the time for bigger fights to be made.

The pure fact is agreed. I'd have picked Vit to win a rematch. Lewis wasn't getting any younger or better whereas Vit was getting better. Lewis did the right thing and retired to cement his legacy. He knew he was done.

Were he low risk Bowe would have fought him as a mandatory, being so high risk low reward he didn't fight him.

Waingro
It's a constant stream of ducking, hometown decision, schooling, destruction and other stock phrases, was funny to begin with but it starts to wear thin after a while.

Bowe did not want to fight Lewis who he knew would destroy him many people dont know that Lewis stopped Bowe in the amateurs and Bowe was afraid of Lewis that is why he threw his belt away when Lewis called him out. That kind of thing is what is wrong with boxing how can you be a true champ if you do that kind of thing??

How many self respecting boxing fans who have an iota of interest in the 1990's heavyweight scene don't know Lewis beat Bowe in the 1988 Seoul olympic final?

Waingro has an unorthodox style of writing that is all. Unorthodox works for lots of fighters so why not the writings of young Waingro

Bowe was not in the same class as Lewis who had far more skill and power. Lewis is an all time great only Ali is better imo. Bowe is not an all time great people know that true champs do not throw their titles in the bin instead of facing the best which Lewis was.
Luckily it didnt matter for Lewis who won the title anyway and dominated his division he became an all time great Bowe did not tbh thats what he deserved for not facing Lewis when he should have.

Big fan of Lewis' but what's to say for 100% that Bowe doesn't knock him out as McCall and Rahman did? We're talking 1992 here, while he was highly rated 2nd only to Bowe, he was not the fighter he would go on to become, it was a few years later around 1997 that he was at the top of his game.

Re: Will Lewis's win over Vitali raise his ATG status.
In boxing you can never say 100% that is the sport. Yes there is a chance that Bowe could have knocked him out but tbh its only a very small chance Lewis has a very underrated chin and even if Bowe did manage to knock him out I reckon Lewis would beat him in a rematch like he did McCall and Rahman who were also not in his class. But I agree you can never say 100% for sure in boxing.
