Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
First topic message reminder :
Let's see how this pans out.
First person to get the confirmed correct answer gets to post the next clue. No need to give the number of characters in the name, but the clue must be for the first and last name (although variants of first name are allowed e.g. Andy or Andrew)
1. Delivered without Jay, a robot, without Cy.

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
laverfan just because I said it was getting a little bit silly doesn't mean I'm not enjoying myself.
Mind you as you point out maybe we need to come up with some more "politically correct" clues. Trust all these Eastern European players for having names that are an absolute clue making nightmare!

My bad... with the double 'n'.
Clue - We need you and a big lever to move the world.
Male Active.

well didn't Aristotle say if he had a big enough lever he could move the earth in space - or is that a bit left field?

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
hang on Archimedes had the eureka moment and ran around stark naked whilst Aristotle was more "metaphysical" and imagined himself having a very large lever but I'll take your word for it.

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
laverfan turns out they both are quoted as having said it but Aristotle was born earlier.
Archimedes it is then. So do I need you or u plus Archimedes or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
I took inspiration from JHM's anagram.
'We need' implies that the following words are part of the anagram.
'to move the world' was thrown in to complete the sentence as a following phrase for 'lever'.
Does that help?

Hint - Anagram of 'you and (a) big lever'. (Pretty close, IMO).

I've been through the top 200 list and some doubles players - couldn't spot it.

Elizabeth could be shortened to Liz, Lis, etc.?
'cooks on it' - grill, oven, microwave, heater?
Am I going in the correct direction?

correct on both counts, idea-wise, but you've not got any of the right words/names.

I can't think of any more players, let alone clues!
Try this -

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
'Using the computer' = 'Computing'?
Are you hinting at Charles Babbage, perchance?
Cannot think of another word (my thesaurus skills are lacking today ).
Male or Female? Active or Retired?

I don't know how you keep coming up with such devilish clues julius - my brain feels fried.
laver - could 'using the computer' be online? That is my sole contribution to this one - my head hurts!

Brilliant laver . You did the leg work for the Betty Stove answer - perhaps we should play 'doubles' , you and I?

We should, TP. I am just glad for the company and some minor contributions.
BTW, the other thread has descended into the usual Fedal debate.
This is my quiet corner. I hope it is yours too.
