Re: South Africa change ODI squad and Third ODI 17/1/2012
Thanks for the info, Biltong. Certainly gives a few players an opportunity to step up and get themselves in the long term thoughts of the selectors, given that Amla and Kallis are two key players in the format. It'll also be interesting to see if Philander can exercise the same control that he has in the Tests, or whether he will be similar to say James Anderson in that his stock ball is actually a risky length to bowl in ODI cricket.
Re: South Africa change ODI squad and Third ODI 17/1/2012
Yes, that is to be seen still. He has only played 3 ODI's international test teams, and things didn't really go his way then. England in 13 overs wacked him for 80 runs in 2008.
India got 37 off 8 overs. He has only taken 6 wickets, two vs Zim and 4 vs Ireland.
But then it has to be said that his mentality and attitude was nder question then.
As you say, hopefully we will see some control.

How's Colin Ingram been going lately Biltong?
He is a bit of a swinger with the bat from memory.

Is Miller playing? Pretty sure I also saw Ingram bat aggressively.

He is having a good Supersport series.
This season he averages high in the fifties with the bat, 2 centuries and 1 fifty (10 innings), but he certainly has the ability to bat technically correct. Can slog but can also hold back when necessary

The team names have gone downhill since they changed from provinces to franchises, Chevrolet Warriors sounds like a gang of mullet & moustache wearers.

That's why I said 'a bit of' a swinger above. some people have trouble with reading the detail.
So what's it like in Bloemfontein... dry out there?

Yep, that is quite true.
I hate this commercialising of everything.
It is similar (going off topic) to the new Quad Nations between SA, OZ, NZ and ARG.
Called The Rugby Championship to accommodate whichever sponsor the individual countries choose.
The Victoria rugby Championship.
Bank of New Zealand rugby championship
Castle Rugby championship.
And whatever argentina has rugby Championship.
Should have been the Quad Nations.

don't know Linebreaker, never really watch the weather further than what I will ride my cruiser.
I just checked the weather and it seems we will be lucky to get a full game in tomorrow if at all. The weather forecast is heavy rain and lightning for the next 5 days except for tomorrow where it is suppposedly sun shine and no clouds.
But then knowing the weather buro, they may get the predicton of rain correct, but rarely the when.

Yes, I hate the new Rugby Championship name too... and some inappropriate franchise names in sport these days.
We have some really bad ones in Oz. So cringe-worthy they're not worth repeating!
There are lots of "Warriors" around I notice...

Not just that, but any war like name. Perhaps we should be original and get back to naming the team after it's province. Wouldn't that be a hoot.

Well it seems there will be a lot of cloud about today in bloemfontein so I expect if this match will be completed it will most likely be by Duckworth Lewis.
SA has not lost at chevrolet park since 2002.
Highest first innings at Chevrolet Park. 351/6 by SA in October 2010 vs Zimbabwe
Sri Lanka's higest score on this ground 288/5 vs New Zealand in 2003
SA's lowest total 184, Sri Lanka's lowest total 105.

It looks like Duminy is getting a bit of a pasting here. 16 runs ff 2 overs.
Good start for Sri Lanka.
66/0 after 14 overs

Yep, Sa won by 4 runs based on the Duckworth Lewis system.
After 34 overs they were required to have 175 with 5 wickets down, and they were on 179/5.
I felt sorry for the Sri Lankans, I actually thought they were in for a shot to win this one. Malinga still had 5 overs to bowl and was on 2/21 after 5 overs. He could still have made a difference.
FAF du Plessis had a good innings of 72 off 74 balls.
De Villiers and Albie Morkel was at the crease when the rain came, and although we won on Duckworth, the game was still in the balance at the time.

So that's the series. Poor SL, they are on a slide too in ODIs. Well done, SA.

Might be jumping the gun a bit/quite a lot but I wonder if it's a new leaf for SA under AB & Kirsten, this seems like just the sort of match/series situation they normally fluff.

Re: South Africa change ODI squad and Third ODI 17/1/2012
Yeah, Galted, you are correct, they do normally fluff this, and to be honest it could have happened last night.
We had two unecessary run outs in Duminy and Du Plessis. We lost wickets on a regular basis and for once the d/l system aided us, I have a feeling if we lost one more wicket and with Malinga on fire ( he bowled smith with the perfect yorker, it was a snorter of a ball. He then bowled Ingram who started with a couple of beautifully struck fours with a slower ball full toss hitting the bottom of the stumps) we could have been in trouble.
I do think Sa is still experimenting, trying to find out how they should play with these new guys.
The team is not really settled as there are numerous guys being tried, but I sppose that is good because the depth looks decent.
Smith is there although out of form, amla is the number one ODI batsman in the world, Kallis wants to play to 2015, AB is right up there with Amla, Duminy looks OK, FAF du Plessis, Colin Ingram, Miller, Alviro Petersen, and a few otehrs are there for batting.
The bowling loks promising, Dale Steyn, Morkel, Albie Morkel, Parnell, Tsotsobe, Philander, M de Lange, Robin Pietersen, Johan Botha. So it looks promising, but not yet settled.
So far I am happy with AB as captain, he communicates well, could have been a little more agressive with his fielding yesterday, and one of the commentators were discussing how Steyn is being used. I have to concur that bowling Steyn in 2-3 over spells is not the best thing, he builds rythm when he bowls and can't find that rythm with only a few overs.
So there are still things to work on, but we have been extremely inconsistent with our ODI performances over the past 2 years. Hopefully we can sort it this time.

Re: South Africa change ODI squad and Third ODI 17/1/2012
Yes, one thing that stands out so far is that there is a flexibility to when albie morkel comes in, or when there is need of a left/right combination at the pitch.
That is something that rarely happened before, I remember how many times Lance Klusener would only have but a few overs to bat, and would not have enough time to make an innings count.
Albie Morkel is in great form, but he also needs to come in with 10 overs to spare and not in the last 2 overs, otherwise he can't be effective.

Re: South Africa change ODI squad and Third ODI 17/1/2012
Biltong what do you think of FAF du Pisstake?
He always struck me as exactly the kind of player England get slated for picking like Luke Wright or Yardy. I assume him finaly making a worthwhile contribution in the last ODI means he'll keep his place but what exacyly is he suppossed to be, a batsman who cant bat or a bowler who doesnt bowl?
As SA just desperate to get a slow bowl variety option in their side even though they hardly use it?
SA perhaps got a buit lucky with the DL there, I never fancy any side to go chasing runs with wickets down when Malinga has 5 overs in the bag. It was certainly still very much in the balance.

PSW, he is definitely only a part time bowler. He has been more successful at the shorter versions of the game, and I doubt whether he will get a look in at the test side.
