Fed's #1000
So Federer will pass the 1000 match milestone on Sunday, hopefully against Dolgopolov. It would be fitting to celebrate this great achievement against a talented shot maker rather than Tomic's pushing style, hopefully they would bring the best from each other.
Congratulations to Federer, thanks from a long time fan of the game who lost interest through most of the 90's and who was brought back to the game only by the Swiss genius. I hope he can stick another few hundred onto his tally!

Dolgopolov would have been the more fitting opponent. Oh well after Fed has 20 slams he can pass the torch on then.

After he wins 20 slams I guess that would be worth considering.

It would be interesting to know which other players (active and retired) have played the most matches. I'm assuming Connors and Lendl will be at the top.

Tomic did play well against Dolgo and kept his nerve to close it out. He has played 14 sets in 3 matches. It is a tough ask. He has shown character so far, though.

I think Dolgo's back, played a big part.
For me Tomic's a little bit too cocky. A declaration that the Sydney tournament was 'wide open', when you had a clear favourite playing it was exhibit No.1. Now we've got the injury comments (for the Verdasco match) and the appeal farce
Indeed they get worse, the latter incident should have resulted in him volunteering to replay a point, such was the gravity of his error
Goodness knows what would happen if Serena does this at the French Open against one of the French girls
Seriously, it may just be Tomic's youth -but I can now fully understand why he's had 'issues' with the Aussie authorities.
I've a feeling Roger will want to remind him who's boss

Agreed. Perhaps a bit of youthful exuberance. The Hewitt 'not good enough' comment was also a bad choice.

Re: Fed's #1000
Tomic for sure is more than just a little bit "cocky" even by Australian sportsmen's attitude in general.
Mind you, it has to be said, he has quite a lot to be arrogant about and might give Federer a decent run for his money.

Re: Fed's #1000
His interview here does show some glimpses of the said 'cockiness'.
http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2012-01-21/201201201327070034877.html
The references to the Dolgopolov incident and the associated comments are fairly negative.
Was it last year that he was up 4-1 against Nadal?
As this link indicates, his success seems to be heady wine for a young player.
Tournament director Craig Tiley confirmed Tomic was chosen as the headline act over two of the game's greatest players after a five-hour scheduling meeting yesterday.
Asked if this meant Tomic had top billing, Tiley told The Australian: "He does. It is hard, in Australia, to put anything ahead of Tomic and Dolgopolov."

Re: Fed's #1000
Laverfan you can understand why Tomic gets top billing. After all, all we hear about at Wimbledon is Andy and his chances.
There's something about Tomic. No, not in a nasty way but more in his cocky youthful confidence/arrogance. Maybe, just maybe he has in him already what it takes to cause a big shock here. And wouldn't that just spoil Federer's party celebrations if he did?

Re: Fed's #1000
I think the only way Federer loses to Tomic is if he (federer) is rusty or injured. I think having the w/o and then playing Karlovic hasn't allowed Roger time to sharpen his game yet. So with that in mind he may be a little vulnerable. If, however, he is sharp, then Tomic has nothing to hurt him with. Slicing and dicing will never bother Roger, especially not on a HC. He'll just run around and spank some FH winners. Hopefully Roger wins but Tomic makes him hit a lot of balls in the process; I think that would be the ideal scenario.

You're correct there is something about Tomic, it's caused by being talked up as the 'next great hope, caused by a dearth of talent in under 21's. If Tomic has Harrison's grace, then he'd be in the Top 10 by June - still might be of course

Roger has being known to get a tad frustrated when he meets players with variety, his record against such players relative to his record against the speed merchants is actually quite poor. Slicing and dicing bothers as much as anything else
Not usually in a Slam though and I can see Fed winning easily

Hopefully Federer will do a "Tomic" for his good pal Dolgo (raise his hand as if to challenge then deny he did it!) I really liked Tomic before this match, now I hope the f***er gets his just deserts at GOATs hands, beat him SENSELESS Rog

the only slicer-dicer that's bothered fed is Murray and that's because he has the wheels and engine to retrieve shots that would be winners against other players. Tomic has neither (yet) to the degree that it should bother federer. Federer like nadal deals with slice very well because he has the movement to run around slices to his bh and then dictate with the FH.

Yep! It was certainly one of the most odious occurrences of recent times. Not certain why Tomic wants to set himself up as the 'spoilt brat with attitude'. He's going to have enough of a job catching the likes of Nole, Murray, Nadal and Del Potro in the next few years, the last thing he needs is to motivate them with his behaviour

I largely agree. But out of all the type of players that bother him, i.e. win 2 in 10 rather than 1 in 10!!, players with variety are the ones. It's as though he sometimes gets bored. However, I don't see an issue with this one. At the moment Tomic hasn't the game to compete with the GOAT

Re: Fed's #1000
Yesterday, against Dr Ivo, the topspin BH, when used was awesome, IMVHO.
Tomic can be jerked around the court a lot with the angles that the FH and BH from Federer create. As BanBro says, Tomic currently lacks the wheels that Murray has to hurt Federer.

When that occurs, Murray is damaging himself - not disrespecting other players

He disrespected Ofcom with his constant swear words in afternoon matches.
Of course I hate Tomic and his underhand cheat to affect Dolgopolov's focus, but he doesn't go out of his way to annoy spectators with petulant behaviour.

Tomic went with the flow and wouldn't disappoint the home crowd, I think if he had put his arm up to challenge in a different tournament he wouldn't have lied about it. Sad but understandable when 99% of crowd are pulling for you.emancipator wrote:Yeah Tomic had a Henin moment

The scratch in the 2nd round means the 1000th against Del Potro. A suitable match for the ocassion.

I counted the Beck walkover otherwise there are discrepancies between ATP and some other counts.

I don;t think Tomic is that slow. He looks slower than he is. He flattened some good FH on points where I thought he would not get to teh ball. He stands very far back and that is what makes him look slow cause he has to cover more grounds.

Tomic reminds me of the young Djoko:
Moving a bit rigid
instinctively not pro-active but reactive
cocky attitude
very consistent in rallies
Strength = absence of weaknesses
Give the guy a gluten fee diet and he'll become unstoppable :-)
In all seriousness, Tomic is definitely a descendant of the generation Nadal-Djoko-Murray.
