great away win for Scarlets
Superb grinding out of a result in Castres. Stephen Jones with the penalty to win at the end. anybody know where that leaves us with regards the Amlin?

Good stuff lads, Scarlets fans were a credit to rugby when they were over. Best of luck to you in the Amlin.

Listened to game on radio wales and a great result should see them into the Amlin.
Few worrying injuries for Wales today Priestland and Lydiate, according to the radio Shingler had very good game so who knows depending on Lydiates injury.

if we can get a bit more impact in our forwards I reckon we'd give the HEC a scare. maybe not winners we'd be up there.

I'd say the Scarlets need a bit more grunt and they could be a very decent side. It's all backs, backs, backs. Your forwards win you the game.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
yeah shingler is certainly putting his hand up and would fit with the welsh game i think. showed his pace tonight and seems to be in the right place. maybe if Priestland is injured then it might be time for the Tovests to finally get their man in the Wales squad...

totally agree. we need a destructive prop and maybe an Ian Gough (not him though) type of second row. We will probably need a replacement for Ben Morgan too next season but the young lad (whos name escapes me) who played number 8 recently did look promising.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
Our forwards were IMMENSE today!
A superb display, Pete Edwards locked the scrum in and Gilbert was magnificent at 8. And Shingler! Tackled his heart out and the pace on him for his intercept try!
Amazing.
Best performance since the away game at Saints, and defensively 2nd half.....amazing, just, I can't even put it into words. So proud. A truly superb win for us.
Bring on the Amlin!

mckay - that would be Kieran Murphy at 8. Gilbert was fantastic today though, that adds to his great 2nd half away against Saints too

Another good away performance, I wish they could do the same at home. Well done Scarlets some good results for the Pro12 league, probably 5 through to last * of HC, 2 from France and 1 from the Aviva.

As in profoundly deaf or can he hear the whistle ?The reason I ask is that I noticed Richie Pugh giving him signals with hand gestures as in numbers.

That's just bizarre. I get that the reward for being top seed in the Amlin is not having to play a HC competitor, but saying that ACC4 is 4 seeds better than ACC5 is just ... to put it in Brian Moore speak, dull.
Shouldn't logical consistency make it:
1 (HC 1) v 8 (ACC 5)
2 (HC 2) v 7 (ACC 4)
3 (HC 3) v 6 (ACC 3)
4 (ACC 1) v 5 (ACC 2)
I still think that's incentive to come top 2 in the Amlin?

I think profoundly, I know he's played for the England deaf team before. Not sure though, will see if I can find out....

had a quick look and can't find anything. Don't suppose it matters a jot, he's still a great rugby player!

Re: great away win for Scarlets
RD Yes it would be great if you could find out for me. It's something that's close to my heart due to one of my sons being deaf.
I do a lot of charity work for the deaf and maybe somebody like Matt could provide a link with the Scarlets.

I think the current formula works since it rewards those teams who do better in the Amlin pool stages with potentially weaker opposition in the knockout phase. For the HEC failures it's a chance to continue in a European competition. It could be argued either way, but putting the names in a hat would be ok by me.

If Stade win tonight (which I think they are), we will be facing Brive, I think.

What an immense win froma team that had 20 players unavailable. Truly epic.
On to Brive then. Can do that one too!

Re: great away win for Scarlets
From what I've heard Shingler had a stormer again, hes had a few games like that this season. (havent seen any of the game yet)
Can any scarlets fans tell me if he is being considered a 6 that can cover 4/5 or a lock than can cover the back-row if needed? Certainly would have been worthy of a call-up to the welsh training squad.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
They are trying to convert him to 2nd row a bit this season, but I much, much prefer him at 6. Tis clearly his best position.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
6 is his best position as he's a bit lightweight for a lock - and although he does quite well there, he pace is so electric he's great in the loose. I'd say his one problem is discipline

Are they? I haven't seen any evidence of this.
They tried to beef him up to 2nd row weight 3 years ago but he couldn't put it on so he has played 6 since and that's clearly now his natural position.

He's played lock quite a few times last season and this season - though since Timani has come in he's generally been preferred as lock and Shingler at 6.

He's played a few times but I don't think they are trying to convert him anymore.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
IMO they still see him as a 4,5,6 player but they are now in a position they weren't in last season where they have more options at lock (because of Timani and Nige burying the hatchet with Welch) and less at 6 (because of Turnbull and McCuskers injuries)

That's about right but Shingler was only emergency cover in my opinion. Just as Mcusker is emergency cover for lock / 8.
I'm worried about Dom Day leaving though. Very worried.

Re: great away win for Scarlets
I am as well - we can ill afford to loose locks, particularly promising ones. I'd say Shingler is viewed as much more than emergency cover as he has been chosen above other locks on a number of times (these locks have then had to contend themselves with places on the bench) and if he was truely emergency cover then they would have put Turnbull at lock and Shingler at 6.
Also, although I don't like him there, I believe Nige wanted to develop McCucker as a 8 so he could play around the backrow. IMO it didn't work and he is now as you say emergency cover (which hopefully won't be needed with Gilbert, Murphy and Morgan there)
