footballers today
i'm getting annoyed by them lately because all they care about is money that's the only reason they are in the game, when they stuff say'' i care about the club, i'm not here for the money '' its aload of rubbish i know they don't care about the club they are playing for, icould understand if they played for their boyhood team but that's not the case. i wish players today would care about football but that's not going to happen i'm afraid.
thoughts ?

Not sure it's true in all cases, Gerrard, Carragher, Giggs, Scholes all play for the clubs they love. Remember Gerrard could have gone to Chelsea for big money but didn't.

Re: footballers today
Hampo the ones you mentioned are old school well Scholes, Giggs and Carragher, they are a dying breed the players coming through now are about the money. Gone are the days when people played Football because of the love of the game. It's sad but true.

I think there were more reasons than a love for his boyhood club (which in Gerrard's case his boyhood club was actually Everton!) why he didn't leave Liverpool.

Nothing better than watching Liverpool fans squirm and wholeheartedly deny he's really a blue.

Re: footballers today
Not all football players are in it for the money. Especially the lower league players I watch, most lower league players could earn a better living outside the game

Re: footballers today
Michael Chopra will forever have my respect.
Newcastle vs Sunderland, score is 1-1 and they have a two v one situation with Chopra on the ball. To win the game all he has to do is square the ball to his teamate. What does he do? Saves Newcastle with a fabulous wayward pass.
He was promptly loaned out from Sunderland.
Special mention to Steve Bruce.

Re: footballers today
To those who view history through sepia tinted spectacles, I hate to use the phrase but, GET REAL, players in the past didn't love the game more than they now do and they weren't more loyal than they now are, there's just silly money around nowadays and agents and lawyers everywhere who actually understand contracts.
Jimmy Greaves and John Charles left these shores around 50 years ago simply because of the money they were offered and I've no doubt that most of their contemporaries would have done the same if they were offered the chance too.
Too often people forget, or didn't know in the first place, that many so called loyal players from yesteryear were only loyal because the clubs owned players to such an extent that transferring a prize asset was extremely rare and the player had virtually no say in the matter anyway.
For every truly loyal player there have always been many who'd have jumped ship instantly if they'd had the chance and the increase in payments that go with new contracts, but they simply didn't have those chances.
Footballers are just like the rest of us, offer us more money and most would go to a new job, the only difference between them and the rest of us, is their job works as a meritocracy, the real world doesn't, those showing sporting talent will get the best opportunity, including promotion to the top (bigger club and paypacket) regardless of background, whereas it's still far more about who you know rather than talent when getting promoted in normal jobs.
