Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
Best..
Royal Lytham: Set meal of posh fish and chips and then a selection of deserts
Celtic Manor: Delicious hot buffet
Broomiknowe GC: Club burger with bacon and a slice of haggis
Launceston GC: once a month foreign food saturday nights (italian, french, best of british etc) always first class
Duddingston GC: haggis parkora
Worst:
brilliant course but..
Newquay GC:
warned off by MEMBERS not to order any food but 2 minutes too late; the worst burger I have ever eaten, period. I was also told about the famous DEAD MANS BUFFET; a three quid plate of leftovers from the previous days Wake. You couldn't make it up! Superb course and excellent clubhouse.
Anyone had any culinary delights or even better some horror stories

Lunch at The Berkshire are superb, provided you can get over the jacket and tie (is that still mandatory?).
Best burgers at Hidden Valley.
In my experience most US resort courses have food which is way overpriced and scarcely worth eating.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
Super, cheeky request but...
can you get me a game with you when I come up in February at St Andrews (I think it is a ballot as I read before) If you want I could pick you up in the toon and drive tae St Andrews. Never even been there.
Another thing about that grub at Newquay was that the chips were barely cooked, I mean I can hardly cook but I wouldn't even bugger up a burger and chips.

Tarka, I haven't been a member long enough to qualify for visitor guest concessions. I don't get that until 2013.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
Dont tend to eat in clubhouses as the food always looks bogging awful. As someone who is into food, cooking and eating out I find golf clubs do not live up to expectations and the standards I look for.
I had a terrible burger in the North Berwick clubhouse. Tasted like it came straight from an iceland packet and into the microwave.
Also had the misfortune to sample the Links trust clubhouse coffee, the worst coffee ever not to come from a Nescafe jar. I hate to think how bad the over priced food is. If you are ever playing at st Andrews; when it comes to feeding time please make the journey to anstruther to sample the amazing fish bar.
Another shocker was the club sandwich sampled at pasatiempo, it was two slices of white bread with about twenty slices of packet ham and mustard in the middle.
I think it must be true that in most cases it is better to venture into town rather than eat in the clubhouse.
The only meal I can think of enjoying on a courses grounds is the Sunday lunch I sampled when visiting the Roxburgh (http://www.roxburghe.net/sportingestate_golf.html ). I don’t think it is part of the clubhouse but it is on the grounds and run by the same people as the course, I think. It had a proper roast beef dinner with big slabs of sirloin. Shame the course was rather forgettable and it was in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
Had good food at Gleneagles, The Grove and Rockcliffe Hall. None of it was cheap though.
On the whole I find the food and general decour and atmosphere of most golf clubhouses to be rank awful and 1950's throwbacks. Not places Id choose to eat unless I had to.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
Generally make it a rule not to eat in Clubhouses unless absolutely necessary.
Best...going back 40 years HCEG and Sunningdale.
More recent....Royal Troon....The Belfry was good but hotel not clubhouse.
Worst...Home Park where I paid for a Christmas dinner and they had run out of meat. Troon Muni is awful especially the stewed coffee. Turnberry is a hugely overpriced rubbish with awful service.

Rarely eat at a clubhouse, turn up play and go home usually. But Hatfield, which was/is Japenese owned. Always try and stay for the Katsui Curry, its pretty special.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
I generally try to avoid eating in clubhouses, for the reasons stated by others.
Unsurprisingly, the best food has always been at the pricey places: the Grove, Woburn and Loch Lomond stand out.
Had a great Japanese meal at the Hatfield CC. First time I've probably eaten Japanese without having to remortgage the house.
In terms of Value for Money, the carvery at Prince's was pretty decent, so much food I could barely swing a club in the afternoon. Great insight into the life of Shane Lowry.
Worst... the average golf club has pretty poor food, but then they are golf clubs and not trying to be any more than that. It's all relative, but I thought Sunningdale was pretty average. If you are going to make a big deal of how you have to change into jacket and tie in the dining room then you have to deliver a top notch restaurant quality meal, not a trip to a Harvester.

Re: Best and worst Clubhouse grub......
i had a half-cooked flat sausage roll at the club last weekend...
going to be sticking to crispy bacon or black pood from now on.
my away club had a good young chef for a part of last season who was making great home made burgers etc. he only lasted a couple of months though.

I have it on good authority that the R&A clubhouse is pretty ropey. Will find out in May.
