Sir Jeremy Guscott – Yes or No?
Sir Jeremy Guscott?
Sir Jeremy Guscott?
When the last new years honours list was announced I quickly glanced down the list in excitement and joy only to be left disappointed when I saw once again a living legend of the modern game had been left off.
Jeremy Guscott has done so much for the game that it baffles me that he isn’t already a Knight of the realm, for example without him the Lions wouldn’t have won the tour in SA.
So I think it’s about time that a campaign was started to get Jeremy Guscott what is rightfully owed to him, come on 606v2 lets get behind the guy, Rugby owes him.

Re: Sir Jeremy Guscott?
Anyone who is prepared to risk ridicule in the national interest by coming out with such one-eyed and ludicrous suggestions, like Ben Youngs being the best player in Europe or the top 6 AP teams being as good as the top 6 in the Rabo to mention a few, deserves to be a knight of the realm!
For me it is a resounding Yes! Good shout HERSH!

Yeah Guscott os prone to some clangers.
I remember his comments on Richie Gray "A big, slow, lumbering, lump, who will be too slow to be effective at international rugby".
Clearly Guscott had done his research and had seen Gray play numerous times to come up with that vigilant and accurate analysis.

Do you get knighthoods for being a plank these days
Actually looking at the British honours system it seems you do, so yer he probably will be knighted

He should be Knighted for his 'moody, collar up, arty angle BBC photo' alone.
He is a knob though.

Sir Jeremy of Melton Mowbray
the guy is a arrogant opinionated chuffer who had talent as a player and none as a commentator.
He was a prize naughty naughty boy and still is

First give a true Living Legend back the Knighthood peevishly taken away from him by Government ministers who then through the following years proved how tax avoidance didn't too rightly annoy them, when they were the ones doing it.
So, come on England, and English sports fans, write to your ministers - you have a living, breathing giant of a King's sport that you have tarnished. Knighthoods mean nothing to me but to him I'm sure it meant the world.
Lester Piggott should be given back the honour he deserves.
When that's done for one true legend, then Jeremy can have his chance

They wouldn't have won the series against Australia in 1989 without his try in the second Test, either.

Re: Sir Jeremy Guscott?
3 world cups, 3 (?) lions tours and he probably wouldve been Captain after Carling if it hadnt been for his injuries.
He has also done wonders for the British scarf industry.
Hate to say it but hes also a great black role model. Hes one of very few black players to ever be a long term regular in a British Union national side. His colour shouldnt matter but it does, in a positive way. He has shown that black chaps are capable of being as posh as white people ( nod to Victor Ubugo) and arent all like Linford Christie.
People have it in for him becomes of his "charsimatic" perosnality and apparent self love, as well as his sometimes whacky expert opinions. But he does come across as a nice guy, articulate and polite. Hes a good example to any young sportsman, even more so when you consider he came from the ameture era.
Wouldnt knight him mind.

Thats nonsence...he's famous for loitering outside Will Carling and Scott Gibbs and for throwing a wobbler when he got dropped for Phil de Glanville too....and for presenting gladiators of course.

Good player, horrific commentator.
No he shouldn't be knighted. Don't think Clive deserved one either.
Also whilst on the topic of knighthoods "Fred the Shred" should be stripped of his knighthood. This would leave a spot open. How about Sir Richard Hill,Sir Jonny Wilkinson?

He's not a commentator, he's a pundit. For what it's worth I think he usually talks a lot of sense.

Commentators tend to be pundits too these days. Reflection, argument, pointing out faults.
Don't think the distinction is so big between the two.

Hee had a near acreer ending injury, came back when he wasnt ready for the world cup and got heavily critized by the de Glanville bandwagon. CArling stepped down as captain, they gave the job to PDG and moved Carling to 13. Then his form came back and he forced his way back into the side, and shouldve been starting ahead of PDG only we all know what happens when you make someone captain.
He was still good enough to get on the Lions tour in 1997, and play in the 1999 world cup till his career was effectively ended again by injury.
Had it not been for the injury I believe he would have had the captaincy after Carling.
Forgot about the Galdisators thing, for that alone he deserves a medal.

Only messing Peter he was a brilliant player...a bit lazy in defence but fantastic in attack. Never a captain.
Awful pundit though.

Great on Gladiotors though, I always admired hios ability to avoid getting visibly aroused when close to Jet. That takes a man with real self control.

I have bucket loads more time for Moore than Guscott. At least Moore does his homework instead of looking at someones stats and claiming them to be slow.

Guscott had criminal convictions when he was a kid, so can't be knighted....although I'm pretty sure there are some who have avoided that rule!

Oh great their goes his induction to the "positive black role models " hall of fame too.
What for? Fraudulent reporting of Englands chances in the 6 nations?

Re: Sir Jeremy Guscott?
Yes i'd rather Brian Moore than Guscott I must say. A truly great player, and as PSW said a positive black role model.
For me though his punditry is in many respects lazy, and he doesn't seem desperately acquainted with current players or opinions. If you're going to take a job like that at least do it with some pride and conviction. I'm not saying you have to be as sad as us lot, but some effort would be nice.
On him as a person, well it would be like me speculating about any other human being I had never actually met, but I found Jonny's comments about him in his autobiography illuminating.

Id forgetten about that. But Id put all that more down to a "rights of passage " thing, testing the new kid. Its quite common in posh school, the army, old school sports teams to behave like an utter ass to the new guy to see how he responds, and make sure they dont feel over comfortable before theyve proved their worth.
Wilko is also a rather over sensitive soul.

Re: Sir Jeremy Guscott?
Yes i'm sure you're right PSW it has the ring of Eaton 'Fags' about it. On Wilko being over-sensitive though, well that is often a comment made by people who have little insight into their own behaviour, and indicative of a certain lack of empathy for others. Indeed I believe it is the very comment Guscott made in retort to Jonny's comments!
Still, a great player and perhaps he deserves some sort of honourable recognition for that alone. What about Sir Jonny though - a model professional and national icon!

I voted yes. But I'd go further than that. The Queen of England should be deposed and replace by Jeremy Guscott.

Guscott deserves a knighthood for services to self. He should have the title of The Abnormally Larger Right Hand Man of the Queen.

Guscot was a terrific player, one of the best 12's I have ever seen. But a knighthood? What has he done after rugby apart from Beeb punditry?
An OBE perhaps.
