Tell us about your game today...
First topic message reminder :
.. or yesterday or whenever your last game happened.
I played this morning - just a bounce game with one of my regular partners.
There had been a big competition yesterday at the club so the course was a bit quieter today than one might expect for a Sunday. 11:20 tee off as a two-ball and lots of other two balls out there with a couple of quick 4-balls so pace of play was brisk.
Those who have read my posts recently will know that I've been suffering with a nasty foot/ankle injury for a few months and it's just great to be out there at all at the moment. Thankfully the foot came through with flying colours though I think I've been favouring it for the last couple of weeks still and after the game today my knee was playing up but with luck that will just be a temporary setback.
A glorious day though in the Thames Valley with above average temperatures and the course was in remarkable nick for mid March.
The match itself was close for a long way. I felt I was playing reasonably well after not playing much of the winter and after losing the 2nd I levelled it on the 3rd and was one up after nine. Though I felt I was playing better than my opponent I couldn't shake him and he hung in there until I went 2 up on 15. Closed it out on 16 but was made to work for it.
Although it was matchplay I kept an estimated Stableford score and came in with 32 (estimated) points which I wasn't too disappointed with given lack of recent regular play. One NR and a couple of holes where a 3 pointer was well withing my grasp and ended with 1 point (short game was actually pretty good apart from those two nightmares)
Now looking forward to next weekend and a Stableford competition where I've been drawn with last year's captain and next year's!

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Mav - at my club in Wokingham there was a big junior girls championship yesterday. Not sure if it was just Berkshire girls or some larger regional event, but if I hadn't seen already that Mavette was playing a match somewhere I'd have been on the lookout for you two!
I tried googling for it to find out if it was just Berkshire or a wider region, but it looked a fairly large entry with ages ranging from approximately 10 to 16 or 18 (not sure about the older one - one or two of them didn't fit with my idea of juniors!)

I'm not sure super realist would think much of there being a special tournament for "big" junior girls. Don't think he'd like the political correctness of the expression either.
How big were these girls by the way Davie?

Played Lutterworth on Sunday lovely day and super condition. My 26 handicap partner splashed out of a bunker on the first to a foot to leave me a free birdie putt and then spent the next 17 holes showing how he had achieved his handicap.Enjoyed it though

It's Tuesday night again, and once again a regular bounce game. Didn't win this time, even though I played quite well and to my handicap, one of my oppos played better today.
Didn't drive very well today, that's a bit worrying, but all the rest was fine.

Lock boy today.
Torrential rain just before Tee off with a poor forecast but we managed to get round dry in almost perfect playing conditions.
Poor outward half with two lost balls, one a completely topped drive. The heather and rough are pretty tough now.
Played well coming in apart from one disaster hole. Bought Deadly's BB 3 wood and hit about 6 perfect shots with it. The Adams family now relegated to the loft.
Greens were a bit slower than they looked and we both did not score as well as we played. Won the bacon roll with 33 pts.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
After having a bit of practice time, not playing too many comps and working towards the medal this weekend, i decided to go in the stableford yesterday.
We started on the easier back 9 but i managed to db the first 2 (1 point) and i quicky though this was a bad idea, the time would have been better spent on the practice ground, but i followed that with 3 battling bogies for 6 points, but a topped tee shot into an unplayable lie led to a 6 for 1pt and followed that by an untidy tree ridden 7 for 0 on the next... i thought this was a bad idea again with the tough from 9 to come... i regrouped and scruffily pared the next two for 5 points to complete the 9 in 13 points...
A daft 3 jack on the 1st (10th) for 1 and i was pretty much ready to give it up... but then on the tough run of holes it seemed to click, and i went for 3 bogies on the bounce for 6, before another daft 3 jack on SI 1 (for 1 point) led to anough mental trough... a decent recovery for for the next par 3 after a horror tee sheet gave me another two, then two regulation pars for a couple of 3 pointers followed by a two pointer to finish gave me 31 and a buffer miss by 1...
Positives.... Decent iron play and holing out
Negatives.... Erratic off the tee, 3 3 jacks from c. 25 feet.... concentration for than anything and too many duffed chips, about 3...All easlily remedied by tomorrow for the medal...

Davie, no it is not aimed at anyone in particular just a general observation. Being able to interact and challenge a mod is like a red rag to a bull.
There is also the feeling that you cannot fully challenge a mods view on golf matters as it may land you in hot water.
YI if something has happened to LJ it is better to mention it in public.

Mac,
It's fine to question how things are done or challenge our views on a subject.
Everyone here is entitled to their own opinions.
We don't censor opinion and if you disagree with something a mod or admin says, there is nothing wrong with saying so........as long as it is posted in accordance with the site rules.
In the same light that abuse against other members is not tolerated, abuse against the mods or admin team is not tolerated.

Yes and I find a bit rich that he gets canned (even though a lot of what he says makes sense and if you actually meet the man he is entirely different to his on-line personna, a real gent on and off the golf course imho) and yet when several of us have repeatedly complained about that pr@tt baboon (who imho) has nothing of value to contribute whatsover, we are told repeatedly 'not to rise to the bait'.

I'll second that (and everything NST says). We have someone who's persistently posting rubbish intended solely to annoy people who the mods are studiously ignoring, whilst a long term member who's probably posted more than anyone else is apparently banned simply because he's challenged the mods/admin. It's evident to me that his main failing is his inability/unwillingness to back down on anything, even when he's got the wrong end of the stick. Surely then the best way to deal with anything out of order is to ignore it, not censure it?

The Mods would do well to remember that this Forum is only as good as those of us who put considerable time and effort into our various contributions. A lot of us joined at the inception of 606V2 and I feel the golf Forum has been one of the mainstays of 606v2. Just as a lot of us joined together, a lot of us can quite easily leaqve together also. This isn't the only golf Forum in town!

Back up folks, by no means was I suggesting an exodus. Just that the Mods on here are quite active and therefore more likely to get involved in some spats.
Look maybe the mods just need to lighten up a little when it comes to the golf boards as it is not like there are many issues on it.

There are about 8 of us that all entered an open at North Weald (LJ's home course) but it was cancelled last week. As we have all booked the day off, we decided just to book up somewhere else and meet up anyway. Looking around the north side of the M25, Old Fold Manor is looking most likely to be the venue.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
apologies for wading in here, but it seems to me that removing the silly mod / admin 'badges' would probably be wise and a step in the right direction. either that or give them all a couple of usernames one for posting as a mod, the other as a contributor. it would certainly be less irritating than the red pen marks popping up here and there. also not sure i like the whole pm-ing the admins. we're all grown ups here and its possible that a constructive debate could lead to some worthwhile changes to this system which might benefit mods and regulars contributors alike. it almost feels like we're 'lord of the flies'-ing it a bit here right now. who's next for the conch?

We don't discuss actions moderation actions taken on the board. Hence the reason to pm.
There is a feedback thread if you have any ideas or changes you would like to see.
The badges are there so that if people need to contact an Admin or a Mod they are easily visible.
We don't allow duplicate accounts so we couldn't have an account for modding and one for contributing. Also it wouldn't be practical. We would have to log out and switch accounts every 2 minutes.

Well today i played really well, I went out in 42, and back in 46 going round in a new personal best of 88.
This is the first time i have managed a sub 95 round let alone sub 90 so absolutely delighted.
Now the question is can i become consistent enough to do this on a regular basis.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
It is always a difficult task to keep everyone happy in this kind of area.
I think the mods have done a very good job up till now.
Baboo is obviously trying to be desrtuctive but is allowed to carry on.
We all know that LJ is a great contributor but sometimes gets a bit OTT in his opinions.
Baboo vs LJ is a no contest and if this is what the problem is with the mods I suggest that you follow the opinion of the 'broad church' of your regular contributers.
Baboo is a total negative and you do nothing.
I posted a semi serious/ jokey comment about the SE of England being the slowest place in the UK to play golf and got a warning! The mod happened to live in SE England.
If an English poster said that it always rains in the West of Scotland would they get the same treatment?

I presume you are talking about me. I had to look back to find exactly what I said, but my reply to you was as Davie a member, not Davie a mod (though I did politely ask you to go back on topic - that much would have been in red font had that been in force at the time).
Your remark mentioned something about the lack of "proper golfers" in the SE of England and as you point out, I live in the SW of England therefore felt entitled to take you to task for your comments. However, it was not a warning. Neither was the request to get back on topic.

Played in the medal today...
Got a 10 on the 3rd recovered on the with par on the 4th and 7th before a long run of bogies then ahorror show on 13 for a 7... several more bogies ensued before 18, where i hit it in a bunker off the tee, fatted my shot out before hitting a 230 yard 3w to 15ft, holed for bird and a stableford adjusted buffer!
Couldn't get up and down all bloody day then do that on the last!
1 bird
2 pars
13 bogies
1 triple
1 quintuple
As my playing partner poetically described it afterwards...
"A sea of mediocrity with 2 big turds in it, all flushed away at the end!"

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Good news for Rossa is that, not only was his ten on a par five, perfectly understandable if you ask me, but it was substantially better than John Day's "effort" yesterday. He acumulated a 13 on a par 4. At least, 13 is what was finally registered, after at various time being shown as an 18 and an 11.
Now, I can see a ten, usually include one in every round of mine on a tough track; but a 13? That's hard work, not to mention good arithmetic, a feature apparently lacking as Daly told Todd Hamilton initially to put him down for an 18.

Would I rather read something posted by LJ that is intelligent, knowledgeable, humorous and perhaps sometimes controversial...or something written by the imbecile who made the previous remark?
That is a tricky one...Let me have a think

Where are you guys meeting up?
There are about 8 of us that all entered an open at North Weald (LJ's home course) but it was cancelled last week. As we have all booked the day off, we decided just to book up somewhere else and meet up anyway. Looking around the north side of the M25, Old Fold Manor is looking most likely to be the venue.
This is still on isn't it?
As far as I am aware, there will be me, D4S, NST, SJ, LJ and El Ringo. Does anyone know any different?

OK Mac, the suspense must have been killing you
The links below shows the offending hole which should aid my description...

3rd hole is north east of the course with a cricket ground to the north of the approach to the green.
3w off the tee blocked right behind the 'large oak' on the right...
Scruffy low shot out on to fw leaving about 180 to green (a decent recovery would have left me 150, the only way to better that is aim OOB on the left and cut a 3w or similar... not the shot for a 15 hc to be attempting)
Pulled 6i from the bag as it plays down hill and long is dead (as we will discover later), and it often will kick on...
The 6i was fatted and pulled... into the bunker 80 yds short of the green on the left.
I opted to hit a 52 wedge to the green, 3/4ish swing, caught it pure as can be and flew the green OOB...
Dropped another and this time landed it pin high about 30ft right of pin which was middle left.
Uphill putt - over read the break, left 4ft right.
Now have a 4ft-er accross the slope for an 8 which is smashed through the break leaving a 4ft-er back, which was, in stark contrast to the last, is dolly-ed below the hole....
Now i would be tempted to play this as a 3 shotter (iron off the tee - as i do most of the time on 16 and sometimes 13), but the cross bunker in the fairway prevents this...or at least makes as risky as a wood...so i go with the 3w...
It was basically 4 poor shots on the bounce, a penalty shot, a decent bunker shot at the 2nd time of asking then a shocking 4 jack

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Yes it is annoying how quickly the shots can rack up. Take my start to a round on an away course a week or two back. Had not hit a ball in about a month, stepped up and topped it of the tee. It was in thick rough after that and the second went no more than 50 yards. Then a well struck but wild rescue that went green high and well right, lost. The provisional was also right of the green and again in the rough with about 30/40 to the pin. I want to make sure it gets up to the pin but sadly it went over the pin, over the green and into a ditch. So penalty drop out, chip back onto the green and one putted.
So i think that makes it a 9.
topped Tee shot
scuffed second
third into the wild stuff
penalty
provisional to the side of the green
shot over green and into the ditch
penalty
chip back onto green
putt
Thankfully the rest of the round was played in +2.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
played 12 holes in a 36 hole open before it was cancelled.
par,
double bogey including 2 fluffed chips ( this is really haunting me ever since d4s brought it up a few weeks ago )
par
birdie
triple , 5 off the tee on par three. stuck the third effort to two feet after skinning two oob and carded a 6
birdie
triple with another two fluffed chips
par
par
birdie
par
bogey
mixed to say the least. everything feels just slightly off at the moment except the putter with the result that my confidence is rock bottom with 13 clubs in my bag. highly frustrating. must get to the range a few times this week before next weekends 36 holer at alyth.

Re: Tell us about your game today...
Well took a trip to leith to play craigentinny for a change, after my pb of 88 yesterday, I managed to shoot a 91 today. 41 for the front 9 and 50 back. There were too many 3 putts on way back.
Overall an excellent weekend for me tho, as stated yesterday I had never shot below a 95 till yesterday and this is the first time ever I have managed to put back to back sub 100 rounds let alone having an opportunity of back to back sub 90 rounds on the 18th.
Aim now is to trying to get to this standard all the time, and finding a way not to tense up on back nine when a good score is to be had, as I suspect this was the main reason for such a difference in scores
