Chavez is not a clever man
http://www1.skysports.com/boxing/news/12183/7479272/Chavez-out-to-prove-his-class
"Julio Cesar Chavez Jr claims he will prove himself the best middleweight fighter on the planet when he puts his WBC title on the line against compatriot Marco Rubio on Saturday.
The 26-year-old, son of legendary six-time world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, is aiming to maintain his unbeaten 44-0-1 record when he takes on Rubio in San Antonio at the weekend.
If he emerges victorious, Chavez Jr will achieve something his father never did and that is to win at the San Antonio Alamodome with Chavez Sr having been held to a draw at the venue by Pernell Whitaker in 1993.
But Chavez Jr has his sights set firmly on a convincing triumph, stating: "This fight will leave no doubt that I am the top middleweight in the world."
However, big-punching Rubio - who has 46 knock-outs in his tally of 53 career wins - insists he will push his countryman all the way.
"I'm gonna give all my heart in the ring," said the rugged 31-year-old from Coahuila."
Sorry, but he blatantly ducked a fight with Martinez. How can this man say he's going to be the top middleweight?
No brains.
Martinez would rip him apart.

Silly comment, almost certainly he is second fiddle to Martinez and to be honest he has no better a claim to be the top dog than Sturm currently.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
Sturm, Pirog, Martinez, Murray, Macklin, Barker, Alvarez, Kirkland etc etc Are all within the weight area and could smash his face in.
Chavez is a chump and hopefully will be found out soon.
If he came out and admitted he has a padded record, and that he would become the best by beating the best, then respect.
But until then...........just riding a name

I hope Rubio wears him down to a late stoppage. Can't stand Chavez. We will see how he deals with non stop pressure in his face all night. Rubio is relentless.

I'd love to punch him in the mouth given the chance. Arum will milk his soul for every cent he's worth.
Stick him in with Pirog or Proksa. They are all young and unbeaten, with the Europeans having an exciting style. Once he gets through one of those, he gains a little respect, but he'll be holding on to that title by fighting bums for a long time to come.

Chavez is riding on Daddys legacy. We'll see what Rubio does.
Martinez is the best middleweight in the world currently. Backed up by record and stats.

This is all irrelevant

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
One of the most blatant duckers to further drag the sport downwards, Chavez should truly be ashamed to claim he's the best after the Martinez fiasco. Though to be honest the WBC are the bigger culprits in this case.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
Although Chavez needs to get his finger out this is a step in the right direction for me, Rubio is a real live opponent. His comments are outrageous though, i'm suprised his dad hasn't gave him a slap yet.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
whilst i agree with the sentiment i have to question the premise that chavez is not a clever man.
He's mediocre at best and has managed to avoid fighting anyoone with a pulse whilst making a living off his dad's name. He managed to weasel his way out of a fight with martinez who would have ended his career and income stream.
I very much doubt he believes his 'best middleweight' blag.
All in all, not very commendable but pretty smart i'd say!

Not sure what the kid is supposed to say "I'm full of hype with no heart so don't come and watch"..
Maybe he's clever enough to not want a great legacy..and clever enough to KNOW his level...
Sons with great fathers never matchup!!!
that's why I cry for Rob every night!!!!!!!

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
anyone, like me, suspect that a) chavez did NOT actually make weight last night and was 161+ but arum paid rubio to stfu and get on with it
(why the hell would you need to strip down if you were 159.5 - since when do pants weigh more than half a pound?
and b) rubio is only in there for a healthy pay day and will be a good employee and lay down when the time comes (which i'm predicting will be in the 2nd half, somewhere near r9-r10).

I also noticed that, he stripped down to weigh half a pound under! I wouldn't sell Rubio short, he might lose but he won't give up.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
he just looked a bit too 'happy' to me...seemed awfully grateful to be there. i am always slightly concerned about a fighter that isnt in there with a look of hunger.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
True, but he is mexican and he took his beating from Pavlik. Chavez will get found out soon enough, I hope he drained himself far too much and is weak at the weight.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
To be fair, Martinez himself hasn't been fighting the very best available since beating Pavlik.
I agree though, foolish thing to say on Chavez' part, magnifying his most glaring weakness: opposition.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
Arum has plans to make Chavez the next big thing in BOXING. He is going to shove this boring limited fighter down our throats for a long, long time. So get used to him.
Just look at what Arum has done with Manny.

Re: Chavez is not a clever man
I dont think Chavez has the talent to be the next big thing in boxing. Arums a promoter, not a miracle worker.
Cant see where there would be much complaints about what he has done with Pacquiaos career. Hes guided him to the very top of the pound for pound tree and made him one of the few fighters out there that is mainstream in the world of sport.

Which is my point manos. Arum has decided to take Chavez jnr down the same route. Manny is not half as good as the hype that Arum has made for him so Arum can do the same for Chavez.

I honestly dont see any comparison.
Pacquiao has fought Morales x 3, JMM x 3, MAB x 2, Cotto, Hatton, Margarito, Mosely the list goes on.
Chavez has done nothing of the sort and isnt half the fighter.
