Re: Davis Cup
fantastic stuff from Dan Evans, I left when Lacko had battled back to 4-3 in the third, so it's great that he was able to keep it together in the end, what a win that is
shame that Ward seems to be struggling a bit at present.

Little John serving for the 3rd set, aaaaand he does it!
Not sure this slow clay is favouring the Swiss at all.

Re: Davis Cup
Again, I like the way Smith has coached the GB team today. In the Evans match he basically steered clear, letting Evans stay focussed on the match and in his "bubble", here he's being much more pro-active, talking to Ward at change-overs, trying to gee him up a bit. Ward's body language seems a bit passive out there, needs to get the crowd going a bit more.

The woman interviewing is TRAGIC!!!!!
USA 2 Switzerland zero, that's good for USA?
Isner says it's his biggest win of his career.

That's a complete shocker (in the positive sense). That must be Dan Evans best ever win:Calder106 wrote:Dan Evans wins 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. Well done
"Great Britain made a perfect start to their Davis Cup tie against Slovakia after Dan Evans beat world number 65 Lukas Lacko in straight sets.
Evans, ranked 211 places below his opponent, saw off the Slovak number one with an impressive 6-3 7-5 7-5 win."
Dan Evans is still only 21 so maybe this is an indication of his future potential.

Eaton's currently ranked 387 NITB, I think he struggled with injuries a couple of years ago or so, but seems to be working his way back up the rankings at the moment.

I just don't know how such young people can get themselves injured like that, don't they have someone to gve them advice on wshat do do and what to avoid fitness wise?
I mean, what does he do with himself if he is not on the tour, Does he have a daytime job?

Re: Davis Cup
Ward goes down in four sets, one sloppy service game at 4-2 to get broken back before the Slovak played a very solid TB. Had his chances, Ward, but wasn't quite strong enough on the big points. Still the first day ends 1-1 and GB are bang in this tie.

Ward's going to have to play better than this in his next match unless Lacko fails to turn up again.
The surprise was Evans. Like a fish out of water last time I saw him play under John Lloyd (no guesses for working that one out) Leon Smith appeared much more capable of getting a good performance out of him.,

Re: Davis Cup
to be fair NB, Leon Smith didn't really do much at all during the Evans match, just let him get on with it, but obviously deserves a lot of the credit for the tactics which Evans employed to perfection.
As for the tie, GB should really win the doubles tomorrow, and then we need either Ward to step it up (and hope Lacko is still a bit short of form) or Evans to repeat today's heroics.

Re: Davis Cup
James Ward loses to Martin Klizan in four sets 6-2 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-3). Martin Klizan is currently ranked 120, he was ranked 86 in September last year. He won the boys junior french open slam tournament in 1996 aged 16. He is currently 22.
James Ward is currently ranked 158, his highest ranking was 139 in August last year. He is currently aged 25. His birthday was yesterday (9th Feb) - I hope this didn't affect his preparations for the match and this Davis Cup Tie in general

Re: Davis Cup
Isner played fantastic and deserved the win. Great performance! He was relaxed and wasn't thinking anything about who is he playing against. Concentrated on his strength and took his chances when he had them. Federer started well but I think he lost focus in the 2nd set ( it happens to him these days. He has also previously some time back had admitted to losing the focus midway at times).

Real poor performance from the swiss team. 0-3 loss at home. Congratulations USA!! Well played and a deserved win. I was always a fan of Isner's serve, but I see some other parts of his game improving as well. Well played Big Jonny.

Now I don't think Federer or Wawrinka will get to play the dead rubbers tomorrow. Let Lammer and Marco have their chance, anyways its all lost for the swiss.

I have just got home and seen the Swiss score. I feel so sad I think I might cry...
Is everyone really sure Federer would really prefer another Wimbledon Trophy and not one of those cute miniture Davis Cup trophies?

very surprised at the Switzerland score, seems Federer not that interested? GB have won the doubles to go 2-1 up against the Slovak Republic. Can they finish the job tomorrow?

GB into a deciding fifth match against the Slovak Republic after Lacko cruised past James Ward in straight sets. Evans has made the perfect start against Klizan, moving into a 3-0 lead in the first set. He has a break point for 4-0 as I type.

Evans takes the first set 6-1, easy as you like, very fine set of tennis from the young Brit.

how good is this from Dan Evans? He breaks twice at the start of the second set to lead 6-1 3-0. Klizan looks a little lost out there.

He's played top notch so far has Evans, must expect Klizan to fight back a bit though..
