If Wales win a slam this year?
First topic message reminder :
I realised that if Wales win a slam this year it will make this Welsh generation just as successful as the 1969-1979 legends.
During that era we won 3 Grand Slams, 5 Triple crowns and outright championships, and beat Australia twice.
The only team who beat Wales in Cardiff between 1968 and 1982 were New Zealand who won there twice, no other country managed it.
In those 10 years between 1970-1979, we beat England 9 games in 10. We beat Scotland 8 out of 10. Ireland were beaten 8 times with 1 draw in 10. France were a bit better as we beat them 6 times with 1 draw in 10.
Clearly this generation is not as good as the 70's guys, but if we can do 3 Slams, then at least in that respect we could call this a golden era for Welsh rugby, especially since it is harder to succeed in the professional game than it was in the amateur era.
Hell if we can do 2 more before 2015 then this will be our best ever decade!

You bet your ever lovin "A" we can, mate.biltongbek wrote:eirebilly wrote:Yep, its nearly 17 years ago now.... Some of the posters on here werent even born then
And we can still give them a run for their money.
I got drafted to play on Saturday morning in West London on a pitch which was a lovely mix of ice and crust and mud and dirt and grass and goose poop. Got stuck in and played a full feckin 80 against this French club. Almost scored, except the referee blew it up because I was offside (which, of course I was). Most of the gents on the other side were in their 20s and early 30s. And we pulled off a win which was even more shocking, considering we had a drooling, doddering, elderly inside centre. I remember being so tired I couldn't breathe at one point. But then I remembered an old coach telling me breathing is overrated and to do it later. He was right, of course. I still can't walk right (I think I pulled my right calf muscle). Couldn't be happier.
So, yes we can always get out there and gut out a match.
Just for the hell of it.
For the fun of it.
Because that's what we do.

People's of the principality. Please wait until you have achieved something before you start blowing your trumpets. Honestly, that is the conventional way of things. Everyone else does it. Why can't you?

Messymesina wrote:Alyn, it's madness to talk of Grand Slams after 2 matches, however you left out of your 70s review the draw between Wales and South Africa in 1970.
Gareth Edwards I believe missed a conversion that would have won us the match.
I thought it was more important to state New Zealand were the only team to beat us at home in that era, it sounded better.
Morgannwg wrote:Alyn, you're a ledge. Nice article. Should we win this years tournament we will only have the English tell us it's devalued due to bad weather, post world cup transitional periods, new coaches, new players.... Why even bother turning up eh.
It's standard practice to say a grand slam doesnt mean anything because al lthe other teamswere rubbish, thats just 6 nations life I'm afraid.
Even if it is the case there will always be1 or 2 cracking games and backs to the wall efforts to pull it off.
Wales winning in Paris in 2005, Ireland winning in Cardiff in 2009, when only that Stephen Jones penalty in the last second was the difference between a Welsh triple crown and an Irish grand slam.
It's a matter of contention, we were winning one of the games until the last minute but they had a pre planned move where Hadden would dive out of the line out to win a penalty to win a penalty. Just google Andy Hadden and penalty and you can read up on it. You may even find a video of it somewhere. Though maybe Wales deserved it after that foot in touch thing we had a few years earlier.miteyironpaw wrote:How is it that you can have a golden era in which you didn't beat the All Blacks?
We didn't dare call our English golden age a "golden age" even when we beat the Southern Hemisphere 17 times on the trot.
New Zealand never forgave us for being th first country to beat them at rugby...

Yes, what a great team you'd be if you could have had the referee blow for full time whenever you got in the lead eh ? !

Just a technical query here, I didn't say "New Zealand never forgave us for being th first country to beat them at rugby" Alyn did, however the quote is attributed to me. Not that I mind on this occasion, but how is this possible?

It's a tag nesting foul-up caused by a bit of injudicious editing. There's nothing (other than your conscience and the ensuing mod slap-down) to stop you "quoting" anyone out of context. I am NOT condoning this behaviour. It's immoral and wrongMessymesina wrote:

But your regions - are still abysmal.
Who knows. One day, ye may even become a proper Country.
But. I dont think so. Far too in love with, and happily owned by - the English.
Nice grenade you've thrown there Gibbo! 1.29am eh? Few Oranjebooms and a reefer?
Volley. Errm, please dont associate me with Oranjeboom. Far too working-and-no-class. It was Haut Medoc, and no reefer.
If Id smoked a spliff, it would have been a lurve-post. Nothing worse.
On now, and I really hope this Welsh team goes all they way. They play sublime rugby. The way it should be played.
Credu.

No,no I wasn't attributed to you, it was in reference that legend has it we screwed them in their first ever international loss, so they screwed us in the 70's as revenge and they have smashed us out of sight in every game since the 80's for the most part.

The advantage in letting them think they own you is that you can't go bankrupt and, thus, become an international laughing stock.
And your gameplan on the pitch doesn't rely on choke tackles. Where and when did that start to become acceptable???

.If Wales winh a Grand Slam this year. it will be a miracle.
It will also be because of the weather, what with France and Ireland having to play 3 games in a row.
Why not waite and see If, If you beat England first, before you even think about Grand Slams
Can we start thinking now Maj???
