Grand Slams the wrong way round
Since the first 6Ns how many GSs have been won the the 'hard way' (i.e. three away, two at home)?
Counting back on my stubby fingers, the Welsh side of 2008 was one - which is surprising to me, as they don't hold the same status in my mind as their 2005 counterparts.

Ireland 2009 is technically one but since our two home games were England and France it's actually the easier way for us.

Me and my stubbies!
Wales' 2005 GS must have indeed been done the hard way as they have three home games this year.

Wales 2005 was the first grand slam to be done with more away games than home games

That's correct though there is of course an argument that 2 away games in dublin and twickenham are harder overall than 3 away games in paris, murrayfield and rome. Not that our away record vs italy & scotland the last decade is entirely unblemished....

In two weeks we'll change that 'ever' to 'just did'.

Does it matter as Italy doesn't really count home or away... well for any team serious about mounting a challenge for the title.
Personally I would say for any home nation team to win a GS whilst playing France away would be the greatest test.

Italy mattered last year when they mucked up France's serious chase for the title. Italy may never be in the running themselves (so far) but they can have deep and meaningful things to say about who is.

France had lost to England the week before so I think in their minds they had already lost the title. Typical French really.

Does anyone have Italy as one of their two home games? That would be doing it the hard way

Re: Grand Slams the wrong way round
It's harder for Ireland in even years, even though they have three home games. France and England away. We prefer the odd years, even though there's three away games. Ireland's Grand Slam came in an odd year; 2009.
We got 4 wins from 5 and finished 2nd on 5 occasions; in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Normally it was the French that scuppered us, home or away.
But now we have to deal with the unfortunate fact that Wales are better than us too.

Re: Grand Slams the wrong way round
I think for Wales its actually easier to win the wrong way around. We have the blue teams in the same location and with Scotland and Italy not performing at present its just France thats a (very) tough game away. I'd say in the last decade its been more likely to beat France away, due to their varying levels of performance than both Ireland and England at home who have both been consistantly good teams.
Now we've beaten Ireland away it seems to be lined up perfectly for a slam, toughest game at home and England not performing too well.

The Welsh side of 2008 played a far more complete game than in 2005!
In 2005 they just chucked it around and hoped for the best. They were good at it, and it was entertaining to watch but there is no way that team (that included the lies of Michael Owen, Sidoli etc) were better than 2008.

I Wales will win the slam. They have confidence and momentum. They'll also have a chip on their shoulder over the semi final when they meet France. They believe they should have won that. A bit of bitterness can be helpful in rugby if it's channeled properly.

Re: Grand Slams the wrong way round
How can they honestly feel bitter about losing fair and square when one of their own players largely contributed by committing an obvious red-card foul?
Preposterous.
If anything France should have their dander up for being accused of only winning due Warburton being sent off.
Wales since, have had plenty of slack from the officials, including avoiding a red card for an even worse incident, that should have cost them the game against Ireland.
Bitterness? Really? Nonsense.

That's a dumb thing to say. It didn't help Ireland did it?

Last time I heard Wales "wanted revenge" was against Australia, and we know how that turned out.

Yeah I know. And the last time Ireland "wanted revenge" against Wales it didn't work out either. But I just think having that extra bit of bite can help sometimes.
