England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
First topic message reminder :
So here we are then, England looking to inflict some measure of revenge for the test series by whitewashing Pakistan in turn in the ODIs.
Both teams make plenty of changes. For England, Briggs and Buttler are handed their debuts in place of Swann and Bopara, while Bresnan and Dernbach get their first outings of the tour in place of Broad and Anderson. Pakistan make another raft of changes, with Imran Fahrat dropped for Shoiaib Malik (suggest Azhar Ali will open), and Rehman and Junaid Khan coming in for the two seamers Umar Gul and Aizaz Cheema. Just one seamer for Pakistan then.
Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Umar Akmal, Shoiab Malik, Shahid Afridi, Adnan Akmal (wk), Junaid Khan, Abdur Rehman, Saeed Ajmal.
England: Cook (capt), Pietersen, Trott, Morgan, Buttler, Kieswetter (wk), Patel, Bresnan, Briggs, Dernbach, Finn.
Pakistan have won the toss and will bat first, unsurprisingly.

Just heard Briggs is only 20. Has a very bright future ahead of him on what I saw today, very good thinking cricketer.

Afridi with a lovely straight drive for four in between two pretty ordinary swings outside off. Too many dots for Pakistan, just six from the over.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
oh very well caught Tim Bresnan! Afridi swings Finn away over mid-wicket but Bresnan on the boundary comes in and takes it very well moving forward. First wicket for Finn today, 12th of the series.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Adnan Akmal run out, prods it into the leg side, Adnan Akmal wants two, but Misbah isn't that interested, and to be fair wouldn't have got back. The throw (from Patel I think) is accurate, and Adnan is run out by half the pitch.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
why do Pakistan insist on believing that Rehman can actually bat? Surely Ajmal a better option at this stage?

looks like I've reverse-jinxed Rehman

and now the anti-reverse-jinx comes into play as Rehman tries to flick one over short fine-leg and is well taken by a diving Jonathon Trott. Finn gets his second wicket, Pakistan 8 down, useful cameo from Rehman.

end of Finn, a bit more expensive than usual with 2-42, but pretty handy spell again. Takes his wickets tally for the series up to 13

KP drop one at long-off which he really should have caught...

Trott takes the catch at long-on two balls later, so not really an expensive miss. Very good last over from Dernbach so far.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Couple of useful blows from Rehman ... looks like 240 .
KP drops one - and Trott takes another ...
Good finish from Dernbach keeps it to 237
Think England will still fancy their chances , as long as they don't go silly confronted by a Five Spinner attack

And Dernbach wraps it up off the final ball, just one run (and a bye) and two wickets in the final over, and Dernbach finishes with 4 wickets, his best figures in an ODI.

Jade and Briggsy were great, especially Briggsy on debut!
Come on Jos get a big score with the bat today!

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Dernbach did well here - he needed to really , as his stock has dropped recently with some ordinary performances (even a pretty poor Big Bash stint in Australia)
Certainly finished off nicely with 2/3 in the last over...

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Nicely bowled as a unit there by England. Briggs impressed me, gave away very few runs, no unnecessary width and a cool head. Dernbach bowled well at the Death, Finn was impressive again and Bresnan and Samit were reasonably tidy.
237 is a target I think they will be happy to chase, they'll probably consider it slightly below par, but not by much. Will be interesting to see Pietersen's approach to starting against spin after his century, as that must have given him a much needed confidence boost. Hafeez and Junaid to open up?

Briggs looks like a very average slow left armer. No turn or drift. Ashley Giles mark II. Against sides that can play spin, he will get destroyed.

I bowl left arm spin, so I know how to determine a decent SLA when I see one...Gregers wrote:You haven't seen much of Briggs either then Demon?

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Cook goes second ball, Pakistan review after the umpire turns down an LBW appeal, and it's hitting enough of leg stump to send Cook on his way! That makes things very interesting.

Junaid Khan looks a decent bowler. Needs to add a yard of pace and could become a similar bowler to Amir.

That was very good of Cook to get himself out so that others can get some batting practice against spin.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
apparently it's the first time England have bowled the side out in every innings of an ODI series (and in fact only the second time it's ever happened - Australia being the other side to do so), impressive stuff from the bowlers.
Pitch looks like it's just tiring a touch

shame cook fell early
however been a very good series for him with the bat and obviously the captaincy.

It's remarkable how Ajmal, one four over spell aside, has looked pretty unthreatening in the ODIs, bowling to very defensive fields (and a defensive line), and England have picked him off pretty well.

Trott goes, bit of extra bounce from Rehman, and he top-edges it straight to Hafeez at square-leg. Ordinary shot from Trott, to complete a pretty ordinary series for him.

Morgan gone, England in trouble, looked a bit dodgy that but England decide against the referral, surprised at that.

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Ajmal with a dodgy bit of footwork there, trying to stop KP's straight drive with his boot, but missing it completely and the ball goes for four. Use your hands next time...

Experimenting is good but it looks like it hasn't worked out.
Get Cook and get England.
If you can't do it in a dead rubber when can you though?

Re: England vs Pakistan - 4th ODI
Well the new bowlers have slotted in and done a great job. The only difference is that Cook failed early - two centuries in the first two ODIs and an 80 in the third. However I don't understand why they dropped Bopara.trebellbobaggins wrote:Experimenting is good but it looks like it hasn't worked out.

Shame for Buttler today, didn't get enough time to see what he's about but his time will come. KP looks absolute class again now and Kieswetter is hanging on in there in able support. Match still in the balance.
