Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
First topic message reminder :
First person to get the confirmed correct answer gets to post the next clue. No need to give the number of characters in the name, but the clue must be for the first and last name (although variants of first name are allowed e.g. Andy or Andrew)
E.g. Delivered without Jay, a robot, without Cy = Bjorn Borg

lol...(although I've just replied to veejay on the other thread about Nadal's serve....guess it wasnt a Fedal point though...phew!)
I'm stumped on JHMs clue so far....I'm wondered whether the word "red" is taken out of the anagram of ruinedangrygaul or something similar...or maybe I need to look at the french words for ruined and angry too?

Ruined - red = uin
Angry = ire, red(again)?
French bread, toast, baguette, bakery, bagel (may be I am hungry).
Is this a good direction, JHM?

Ruined = Marred - red = Mar (as you say)
Angry = rile, irate, ire, fume, ... ?
Margit is what I can think of French.
Martin Damm (sounds like damn)?
or
Mart-ire something?

Mar + cross = Marcos?
There is only one I know who is available in my short-term memory - Marcos Baghdatis?
Searching long-term memory now...
TP... you always find the correct word.

Yes, but the clue doesn't say the player is French, it says 'and French' i.e. 'et'
Marred cross et, losing 'red' = mar cross et = Marc Rosset

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
I'm presuming its a name ending in "...ova" given the Virginia clue. But there's quite a few "...ova's" in the game so I need to work out the other bits! I'll keep thinking...

Nope. The other letters in the clue and 'sound like' should help a bit. You might be surprised at the answer.

Brilliant choices so far, JHM.
'I am' - part of the name
VA - part of the name
Happy - Need to consider synonyms or similar words to 'happy'.
This is a very famous player with a significant title. (Not sure if this player has been used on this thread in the past. )
