Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
First topic message reminder :
First person to get the confirmed correct answer gets to post the next clue. No need to give the number of characters in the name, but the clue must be for the first and last name (although variants of first name are allowed e.g. Andy or Andrew)
E.g. Delivered without Jay, a robot, without Cy = Bjorn Borg

Martina?????? Navratilova?????
Again I have no idea why - I am still trying to work out how lydian got the 'ova' bit.

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
'ova' was derived from VA, the state code for the US state of Virginia, TP.
My hints to JHM still stand. Let me know if you need more hints.

Two hints - Retired female. Significant tennis title.
Third hint - Retired in November, 2004.
Next hint will be country/region of the player.

My apologies to both Lydian and JHM. I should have clearly stated the 'VA' part to be accurate rather than the 'ova'. Will try to ensure I do not mislead.

If NB is not around, perhaps Lydian or JHM can provide a clue.

I'll let you off LF
A good clue you created nonethless, very creative!
Oh...I'll need to engage grey matter for that...might be a bit too late for Mr Lydian to come up with anything that would take you guys more than 10 secs.

Did Alan die in a strange way? Did he give Charlie to someone else?
(Not my best clue, accuracy wise, but enough to get to the correct answer I hope.)

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
Did Alan Die? - always leads me to an anagram of Nadal.
The second part probably means 'C'(harlie) is removed from other parts to arrive at a partial or full name?
Does that sound reasonable, JHM?
Lydian... JHM can probably do it in 10 seconds, but TP and I will take hours (like the Jordi Arrese clue you did).

Did Alan Die? - There's an anagram in there of 2 of those words, to give the first name.
Surname - try again.

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
We have used this player earlier, IIRC? (The 'conman' clue)
Connor Niland?
Nalbandian does not fit because it is the last name.

The other choice is Daniel something.
Or Daniela (Die Alan - anagram) Hantuchova (sounds like 'Hand You C Over')?

Quite an assumption we're all in to B horror movie flicks here.
Here's a more user friendly one:
A cleanable hat in other words would probably be useful when this player gets very sweaty.

NB - Chuck has always been short for Charlie - it's what Peppermint Patty calls Charlie Brown

Are you hinting at Andy Roddick, JHM?
PS: Or should try anagrams of 'a cleanable hat'.

JHM I stand corrected Good ol' Charlie Brown.
laverfan if you're referring to the clue with A_Rod he's couldn't have been further from my mind. Nope we're talking a little bit closer to home here.

Ah, so I need to think 'outside the box'. Is my anagram direction based on 'in other words' or perhaps a synonym the right direction?newballs wrote: if you're referring to the clue with A_Rod he's couldn't have been further from my mind. Nope we're talking a little bit closer to home here.

Nope nothing to do with a fedora hat.
Yes it's an anagram LF (there was another alternative which politeness stopped me from posting).
Female you might even get to see at the Olympics (way tooo many hints already!)

Elena Baltacha. I thought of her, but for some reason didn't make the connection with the anagram.

Would " a mixed up free spirit with an arty car" have been a better clue?

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
Hmmm, that probably would have been a bit obscure, especially as it's gin, not jinn. It was the accuracy of the 'free jinn' anagram that was the important part, I think. "Arty Ford" rather than "Ford artily" perhaps would have been better, with 'backs out' indicating they are reversed.
Haven't got time to think of a clue right now. I'll do one later unless anyone else wants to have a go.

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
The process of hiding the IP address behind a router has specific nomenclature for the technology.
This would give you letters that go into the name of the player.
