Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
First topic message reminder :
First person to get the confirmed correct answer gets to post the next clue. No need to give the number of characters in the name, but the clue must be for the first and last name (although variants of first name are allowed e.g. Andy or Andrew)
E.g. Delivered without Jay, a robot, without Cy = Bjorn Borg

laver - I don't think I quite 'got' the setting clues bit!!
in the end refers to h(as).
Then think saint and 'without' separately.

Let me know if I misinterpret your directions.
Saint as = usually Santi... or Stas...?
One I can think of is Stakhovsky?
Is this even 'warm', TP?

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
Saint specific = Nicolas or Nikolay, Tomas, Lukas (Luke - Lacko and Rosol)?
Exclamation is perhaps an 'I'.
You are doing fine, TP. It is the reader who needs to think like you.

It would be Tom-has Berd-Ich?
Is that correct, TP? (or is it back to the drawing board for me?).

Literally the King, not a specific person.
newballs wrote:axes - cuts, executes?
Correct. A specific word will give you the last name of this player.
The name could literally mean 'king of cutters'.

Carlos Rexach-Itoiz or something like that - I haven't a clue who he is, or was but if you type Rex into player search it produces his name.........

King = Rex is correct, but think of other European languages.
Axe is the 'verb' or 'noun' in the same language as the language for the 'Rex' equivalent.

Just been through the draw, singles and doubles, of all 3 tournaments. No idea. I need to know the words for 'King' and 'Axe' in French or Spanish or something?

French for king = roi, Spanish = rey and German = konig, or are we sticking with Rex
If so, axe in latin is securis

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
Of course, King in Portuguese. It's so obvious! Why didn't I think of that from the initial clue?!
Is it Rei Machado?
No, it's Rui Machado.
Oh boy, you're going to suffer with my next one!

Geller's confused - about speed or about nothing?
Ooops, that's Rui Machado again.
Try this one -
We heard he turns the lady to liquid after the huge truck misses anything.

OK how about some ground rules? Just because someone got an ATP point from a walkover in the Timbuktu classic and therefore appears on their website shouldn't really make them eligible or should it?
I can think of many interesting clues describing players down at my local club for instance!

We heard - sounds like.
turns the lady to liquid - weak knees, wee keira, gel, jello, shiver, tremble and some other choice words? or is it a specific fictional reference - James Bond, Casanova (Et Tu, JHM!), Don Juan, ....
'after' = add the result from above to...
'huge truck misses anything'?

Did I mention it's in an obscure dialect of Arabic
Just kidding.
Sounds like - yes
turns the lady to liquid - it's more of a literal interpretation of those words
after - yes
huge truck misses anything - yeah, that's a puzzler, isn't it?

Re: Tennis Player - Cryptic Clue Thread
Jurgen Melzer is correct, but you haven't worked out the Jurgen part
(huge truck - juggernaut) minus (anything - aught) = juggern which sounds sort of like Jurgen.
I knew the 'melts her' part would give it away.

There is another word in the clue which is part of the anagram.

So the player's two names are an exact anagram of er, dingo and one other word e.g. raved or daughter?
