Nicknames - Page 2 Empty Nicknames

First topic message reminder :

With the retirement of Mad Dog announced today, it occurred to me that he's one of a very few rugby players identifiable by supporters by a soubriquet entirely unrelated to his real name.

Off the cuff I can only think of Jiffy (and why is he called that ?)

So that's a near blank side of A4 for you to fill...

Dr Phil - Contepomi

BOD/DOC/POC/TOL/NOC - and other Irish abbreviations...

Wally - David Wallace

Wasn't Neil Jenkins called The Ginger Monster or was that someone else?

Also J-Ro (that's mine for Jamie Roberts...)

Bread of Seven - Sam Warburton.

Christian Cullen was known as "Beer Bottle" to his teamates rather than "The Paekakariki Express".
"Beer Bottle" as in empty from the neck up.
A fine rugby player but not known for his intellectual prowess!

I think 'Sanchez' is Genia's name by birth, he's just been Aussied-up to 'Will'.

Chris Whitaker I'm told was called 'Anthems' because (being George Gregan's backup) all he ever got to do was sing the anthem before kickoff.

I've also heard Tatafu Polota-Nau referred to Apocalypse (now).

Bread of Seven is a cracking nickname. I know the song bread of heaven but I only copped how clever the nickname was when I saw an ad for Warburtons bread.

He was ripped to hell.

He had muscles where most people didn't know they were supposed to have muscles.
There was a Scrum V episode and it showed him training on the gym equitment.

At one point the announcer at PYS was trying to give nicknames to players (not Smiler, Wellies, Reggie, or Foxy, but folk who didn't have nicknames). The ones I remember were

Iestyn 'The Rock' Thomas
Phil 'The Fisherman' John
Rhys 'The Rhino' Thomas
Pete 'The Meat' Edwards (and at one point 'The Calf')
Josh 'The Terminator' Turnbull
Ben 'The Missile' Morgan

also on the scarlets front:

gareth davies is: cawdor (his fathers car dealership)
matt gilbert: gumbie
ken owens: the mayor (of carmarthen)

also didn't ben morgan also have a "ron jeremy" type nickname, cause his father looked like him? another for rhys thomas i believe was stinky too.

Actually Eric Rush made up "Beer Bottle" in one of his books as a wind up.

And it stuck.
