I am not concerned about the time he retires as much as the time he keeps losing to the other top 4 players. They can already "contain" his genius and that's already sad news for tennis.

When we finished last summer tennis season the best our tennis quy said when Roger would retire you would not see me here anymore
I do not think that there will be another player with a such brilliancy of the game. Therefore I wish to see all this year GS finals between Nole and Roger with a result: Nole wins 2 and Roger 1, that would be amazing upcoming tennis year to watch

Emancipator,
Fed would've disagreed and been ashamed of your poor and inadequate choice of links. THIS one however, would have met his full approval

P.S.
Fed says go and do 200 press-ups for this unforgivable PUBLIC blunder

I heard rumours he's considering to try and remain competitive till the Rio Olympics
I think he can do it,he is healthier and fitter at his age then most of the players in the draw
But I agree,he's consistently been a part of the game for so long, its hard to imagine him not in the draw

He did caveat it with the fact that if the OG was on Clay, he might not.

This is why I don't place much importance on the Olympics, every 4 years on a different surface,it has no identity
He should actually be liking his chances on clay,I have heard a few people suggest that his chance of winning RG is greater then it is at Wimbledon. What do you make of that?

Can I just add another thing to this Fed fest. I've been watching Federer on TV for years, thinking he was good, and all the commentators kept saying "All the people who have the privilege of seeing him play live, they know they are witnessing something special." And then I saw him live...man was my mind blown away...

Someone I know went to see the Roddick-Federer MSG Showdown. A jet-lagged Federer, but he was poetry in motion according to this person. Amazing. Going to a Pink Floyd concert vs. listening to the CD of 'Dark Side of the Moon' - very similar experience.

A friend of mine went too,he said after the exhibition matches Roger spent some time chatting to fans and signing loads of autographs. My friend and his grandson were fortunate enough to meet him and have a little chat with him.He said even though Roger looked exhausted and was clearly jet lagged,he put a lot of effort into making the matches entertaining by showing off a little and was in no rush to get out of there afterwards.
This is what I admire so much about Federer,he always sets the right example all the time, its actually scary when you consider how often he personifies perfection. How is it possible to almost always make the right decision and do the right thing every time?
If that was me i wouldn't even have thought twice about the fans and even if the thought somehow miraculously crossed my mind,I still wouldnt have bothered especially if I was jet lagged. He is obviously aware that some people like my friend sometimes travel great distances just to see him play but even then t doesn't automatically mean he owes his fans anything, but yet considering how much he always gives back, its rewarding supporting him and his fans are never left disappointed
It will be a sad day for sport fans when he retires, theres never been an athlete like him before, very few sportsman come within reach of his greatness, and those that do cant seem to avoid buying into all the air of invincibility stuff written about them or avoid getting carried away with their newly found money, power and celebrity status .Roger is the only pro athlete of his age and that calibre that I can think of who hasn't been linked to some damaging scandal which has led to a fall from grace and he is never making front page news headlines for all the wrong reasons
Being named the worlds most respected and admired celebrity personality( not just in sport) only behind Nelson Mandela is testament to his class

I concur with Harpo - if anyone has not had the pleasure of seeing Fed play live, I would urge you, fan or not, to do so now while you have the chance.
The television cannot do justice to the variety of shot, but it also blunts the speed of the ball from his raquet - and his incredible athleticism.
Win or lose, he really does play like no one else, but that does sound like commentator's waffle until you are sitting courtside.
You are aware that you are watching one of the most insanely gifted athletes of all time.

T please. Couldn't agree more about TV versus actually-being-there. Pity the TV don't show a few points from the side. I know it would mean the viewers and the camera guys having to keep their eyes turning, but that's what the spectators do and they don't all go cross-eyed.
The TV angle, always from behind, tends to suck the life out of a match. You can't see the speed of the ball or the players so well as you can when you're there.
Only seen Fed twice live. Once was THAT MATCH against Sampras on Centre Court in 01 - how lucky was that? - and the other was when he trounced Rafa at the O2 last year.
Hopefully, Fed is aware of the wishes of his legion of fans worldwide that he play on for as long as possible. He seemed knocked out by his reception in Rotterdam. Let's hope he carries on for a good while yet.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
I saw him live twice in O2, once from quite close.
And , just like any other player, you can get so much more from being able to focus on them solely if you like to, not see only what the cameraman chooses to show you.
I loved the silence with which he plays and the amazing focus and bubble he moves in. He really floats in the world of his own when he's there.
The unexpected thing for me was the breathtaking beauty of his backhand and the amazing variety he has on it.
In the final against Nadal in 2010, it was that backhand that won him the match, which is strange knowing that Nadal goes for it all the time.
I suppose the main thing with Federer is the classic symmetrical beauty of the way he moves.
He is quite a handsome athlete in a manly way and his game shows it off so well: at the moment of ball contact, his face is still and serene and that to me is the most delectable moment of Federer and his tennis. It's something that no other player has.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
As said to Harpo I can't quite pin point what makes him an amazing player to watch live. But the clue I guess is his talent. The fact he does things effortlessly makes you believe that we coudl do it too. THat's the thing about talent is that it tells us that if we were in harmony with the environment we coudl do it too without having to built those amazing bodies the top players get.
We see that best when he plays his SHBH. He simply unrolls it not too slowly, not too fast, almost always at the same speed and it just happens that the ball is at the right place and right time to meet his racquet and plays a perfect timed shot every time....almost.
In other words he is so much in tune with his environemnt (ball, space etc...) and he does it so effortlessly that we feel it's actually the environment which makes the effort to be in synch with him.

Many have commented on the stillness of the entire body when there is a contact with ball. It is admirable.
This is turning to a 'worship' thread in the eyes of some posters. Perhaps it should, just to show the legacy he will leave behind, once he chooses to hang up his racquet.
I can see the beauty and grace and why Tenez admires him a lot.
I went to Rijkesmuseum in Amsterdam. in the 90s and almost missed my flight leaving Amsterdam. It has a fantastic collection. Watching Federer live may be the closest some fans would come to 'religion' and 'ecstasy'.
Hope someone builds a Federer museum in Basle as a tribute.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
Certainly for Fed fans there was something utterly reassuring in their hero's performances from 2004-07. He seemed to win all the time and in great style. There was very little let down, very little feeling of that acute disappointment and depression that grips fans of all sports from time to time.
Of course this could not last and it might actually have been bad for the game if one guy had dominated for too long.
More recently, success has come more fleetingly, with the triumphs when they come perhaps being appreciated even more as Rog reaches the end of his career. Will there be anyone quite like him with grace, power, charisma? Probably not. Will there be other heroes to latch on to? Definitely yes.

A player with great poise and grace, of that there is no doubt. Makes the technique of the game look easy.
The only question now is if he can secure a slam in his 30s will this be the moment he too starts officially looking back...?

It might take an early exit/injury with one of the other top four guys for Fed to win another Slam. I reckon he would be doing well just to get to a GS final. Believe he would relish another Slam more than anything else he's done (praps with the exception of the French in 09).

Or it might just take him 2 good days in the final rounds. He is not that far from the two who have beaten him thus far. And I am pretty sure that on faster lower-bounce surfaces, he would still have a good chance.
Also Djoko and Nadal may not have an early exit...but a late one by Tsonga Delpo etc....
He is certainly in the mix I feel...though from what I saw last night Djoko seems improving faster than anyone, atm.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
I think he could LF and he must be keenly aware thats what Sampras did. As its over 2 years now since he won one he must know if he wins another the chance of another one after that will be dwindling all the time. HOWEVER...the problem with this is that the fans never know when this might be. Agassi made it clear that USO 06 was his last event and look at the reception he got, and he had time to prepare a speech in mind too. His retirement became one of the abiding memories of recent years in tennis. So I wonder if this is the way Fed would also like to bow out - after all he does like to be centre of attention! Cant imagine him wanting to win a slam and then disappear not having said "goodbye" to everyone...because ultimately thats what Sampras did.

BUt there is a difference between Pete and Roger. The latter is far more popular, more than Agassi even. When they decide to hang on their racquet I don;t think they have much of a (maybe financial) choice to choose the way they leave the scenery. Even if Federer wanted to go quietly he'd be forced to round the world one last time, so he woudl have to tell a year in advance as many would want to cash in on his last appearence. I don;t think Pete ever entertained a close relationship with his fans. Probably more now than then.

Broadly I would agree. I think another Slam is a very tough target, but maybe not out of the question. Not sure whether better 'than anything else he's done' but no doubt a Slam win at this late & unexpected stage would very likely be considered more special than his many others and not simply 'yet another for the collection' in the way that, say, Slam number 8, 9 or 10 seemed at the time
Lydian mentions Sampras : I often find myself comparing Federer's current twilight years to those of Pete - partly because Pete ranks just behind him in terms of Slam records, but also because their birthdays are within just days of each other, so the gap of exactly a decade makes chronological comparisons quite tempting.
Fed's Slam 'drought' (factual, but perhaps unfairly-critical, label ...?) currently stands at eight, dating back to AO 2010. Pete's drought was also eight before he lifted his last trophy at the USO 2002, and then promptly - and smartly - called time on his tremendous career. It was an ageing Agassi of course (albeit still ranked as high as 6, impressive !!) who he beat , and I always think of that Final as the clash of the pensioners. Doubt there have been many (if any...?) others in recent times with both finalists over 30 .......
There is a significant difference in the two droughts in as much as during Pete's barren spell there were some pretty grim performances, often forgotten in the passage of time, including a number of first or second round exits, often to real journeymen. Federer however is yet to suffer any such losses, having always made quarters minimum but invariably semis or even Final (RG just last year).

I don't think Roger will just disappear off the radar once he retires the way Pete did
I think he will continue to be active in the tennis community and the charities he supports
Technology has definitely changed our lives a lot since the 90.Its a lot easier for Pete to be in touch with his fans today, through the internet and social networking sites then it was when he was playing.
But Petes nature is still very different to Rogers,he seems very stand offish, even if this technology was available during his time,I question if he would use it as much as Roger does.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
Pete was always a very very private guy, didnt say much, and wasnt bothered about saying much. He played for his own ambition. Towards the end of his career he wasnt enjoying his tennis that much but was driven on by that last 1 great win because he believed he still had it in him. Clearly Roger feels (and shows) this ability to still win big too, and this will drive him on similarly.
The question for any big player is just when do they call time and how? If Roger goes through this year slamless then I think its pretty much over slam-wise, just cant see him doing it in 2013 and beyond unless luck really falls his way.
As he hasnt had the dips that Sampras had, the question is will Roger start to fade away or slip abruptly? I think because his game is so finely tuned that the decline when it comes could be quite quick, and we wont see him clinging around for a long time...either way I just dont see him playing on beyond end of 2013 come what may. Maybe WTF 2013 could be the sign off...and he always has a good chance of doing well there given its indoors, plus it would give people a good chance to say goodbye as it could be known some time in advance late season that WTF was going to be the end of his career.

I will miss you too (like Federer) when you decide to hang your pen(wo)manship and leave Tennis forums. Hence you are unique.
Now I feel like crying. I miss Duggie2 (too). I know Tenez has had his fair share of 'run-ins' with him. I am glad to have this forum (and others) and the discussions we have.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
lydian - yep, his game is indeed very finely tuned. Which in part is why so many posters have been telling folk to go see him whilst it's still functioning well.
And in the same way that even the very best high-tech equipment can cause huge frustration to its owner once it goes seriously wrong, I'm not sure Federer would want to prolong his time on the tour if it meant regularly enduring the sort of defeats that Connors appeared happy (I use the term advisedly) to do ....... And I doubt many of his fans would want to see that either
I'm sure Fed himself has talked fairly recently of another three or four years and obviously the decision is entirely his own, health & fitness permitting. But I reckon 2013 is very likely crunch time, and quite possibly before it's through.

Hmmm ..... that's a long, long way ahead in the life of an athlete already into his thirties ; although the almost uncanny freedom from injury will give him a fighting chance if that's his serious target
I guess the strategy could be to adopt a much reduced calendar, whilst committing to enough tourneys to maintain match fitness and competitiveness.

Re: The most awesome Federer tribute video
Agree lags, I think Fed would find it really hard to deal with consistent early losses in events given his remarkable consistency over the years...and I do think these types of losses may start to come this year at some point. He may want to be in Rio in 2016...but I think he'll be on the Copacabana beach with his daughters, not on a tennis court.
Yeah LF, what happened to Duggie2? He and I both argued with Tenez like cat and dog on 606v1...lol...no change there hey!
