The Greatest You've Seen
If this has been done before then sorry but I'm bored.
By looking back into your memory bank, which would be the best world XI from players you have seen, be it on telly or live?
Mine would be:
Schmeichel
Thuram
Canavarro
Sammer
Maldini
Zidane
Mattheus
Platini
Messi
Ronaldo
Maradona

I do think that would be a ridiculously attacking team though, and I did take out a couple of players such as Vieira and Henry.

Always surprised to see Maldini picked at centre back, he was a far better left back than Carlos although we're going back about 15-20 years there.

Yeah, I had him at LB. He IMO was at his best in the early - mid 90's when he played there for Italy.
Carlos was pretty shoddy at defending at times. His pace helped him a lot.

Older posters - OK, I mean me - would probably include the likes of Pele, Cruyff, Best, Bobby Charlton, Law, and Gordon Banks. I even saw Tom Finney but it was his last season.
I think I would have to include Maradona and Messi which would mean a real fight for places.

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
"LIVE" only, don't rightly see how you can really assess a player's performance on TV, other than the highlights and lowlights, if they are even shown:
G: Pat Jennings
RB: Gary Neville
CB: Frank Munro
CB: Bobby Moore
LB: Terry Cooper
RM: Neeskens
CM: Charlton
LM: Giggs
S: Pele
S: Bergkamp
S: Greaves
Bench: Shilton, Jimmy Dickinson, Dave MacKay, Kevin Beattie, Brian Robson, Trevor Francis, Osgood, Rooney.
I'll remember someone essential with the next cup of coffee, so "click" . . . .

It's pretty difficult to fit them all into a coherent team, but that was my best shot!
Others there could have been; Totti, Batistuta, Buffon, C.Ronaldo, Henry, Ronaldinho, Keane, Cantona, Giggs, Bergkamp, Hierro etc etc. My head would explode if I sat here trying to get them all in.

The best player I've seen actually live, as in in the stadium, is Frank Lampard.
But I've not seen many Premier League players, supporting Watford.

I remember Beckenbauer playing the semi final against Italy in 1970 with a dislocated shoulder. Not sure how many players would do the same nowadays.

Looking at the line-up, I am amazed you missed George Best off. From 1969-1974 he was regarded as the best player in the world by many who played against him at that time.

One player that I haven't seen on this article is Rivaldo. Most would have seen him as well.
Great player and would be in my team if I was 15 years younger, ie no Platini.

The OP meant live as in either at the game or on the tube. I doubt many saw Muller in that capacity, so then it would seem strange to compile a line up of players you haven't seen in their pomp.

Certainly saw a fair bit of Muller on tv playing for West Germany and Bayern Munich throughout the 1970s.
Surprisingly perhaps, he wasn't that gifted with the ball. His tremendous skill was in reading the game and anticipating opportunities. That so often enabled him to gain an extra bit of space and react almost instantly with a close range goal.
There's an old expression - great goalscorers don't score great goals. That sums up Gert Muller.

Messi and Luis Ronaldo up front would've been delicious. Seedorf and Zidane behind them infiltrating the opposition.

Wanted to include Leonardo in my team, the sweetest left foot i've seen and as a wide player is superior to both Messi and Ronaldo. If I were to try and make a team to win i'd have to leave one of them out as i'd only want one luxury player in which case Leonardo or Giggs would replace them.

Probably best to keep this to players who I've seen reach their peak in my lifetime.
Schmeichel
Thuram - Sammer - Cannavaro - Maldini
C. Ronaldo - Keane - Zidane - Rivaldo
Messi
Batistuta
Unusual formation, with Messi playing as deep striker, but naturally I've bent it a little to make sure I can have all the names I'd consider essential in!
