The Greatest You've Seen
First topic message reminder :
If this has been done before then sorry but I'm bored.
By looking back into your memory bank, which would be the best world XI from players you have seen, be it on telly or live?
Mine would be:
Schmeichel
Thuram
Canavarro
Sammer
Maldini
Zidane
Mattheus
Platini
Messi
Ronaldo
Maradona

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
I won't bother trying to pick a side as it's too damn hard with the amount of quality I've seen.
...but I will say that the Milan side of the early 90s was easily the best club side I've seen, as much because I believe that the current Barca side WITHOUT Messi would be very good, but probably wouldn't have won much at all, yet you could take any single player from the Milan side and they would still have been the best in Europe.
Messi really is that good, he's just so consistently world class it's unbelieveable, much like Maradonna was in the 80s.

Thierry Henry, Messi, Yaya Toure, Pique.
Saw them play Hibs at Murrayfield.

That sounds like it could have been a bit one-sided?

Absolutely amazed for all those going on about the Milan side of the early 90's and picking Maldini that no one has mentioned Franco Baresi, who for me was the standout in that Milan back four.

Maybe many didn't see Baresi at his best?
I picked Maldini mainly on post 94, although I have been watching Football since the late 70's.

Baresi was amazing, he was the marshall of that defence.
Didn't he also play for Milan untill he was about 60?

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
Baresi was immense. Despite a lack of pace, he was a marshall and up there as one of the most intelligent defenders there has been. It is amazing how Milan have managed over the years to prolong the careers of such players as Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta, Nesta.

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
Yep Milan have had a great defensive philosophy based on unity and coordination at the back rather than pace. Baresi was the conerstone of that mentality and seemed to pass the torch onto the others.

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
too young to properly remember baresi, he retired in 97 when i was 12, not fully be able to appreciate him at that age plus im guessing his best years were long gone by then. where as maldini went into the late 2000's and was the main man for milan for the majority of my life!!

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
I've got no problem with Maldini being selected, just found it perplexing that Baresi hadn't been mentioned by those going on about that early Milan team when the guy was still a force. Hell even when he retired in 97 he was still a force in my eyes.
Baresi in my eyes is the best centre back I've seen in over 20yrs.

Bonjourno!
This is not only the greatest team I have ever seen, but it's the greatest team anybody has ever seen. We have the Anti-Zidane potion, the greatest goal keeper who ever lived and possibly the most famous pony tail of all time.
The people of Monza present to you, The People of Monza Presidential Selection. Enjoy!
GK Dino Zoff
Def Marco Materazzi
Def Paolo Maldini
Def Franco Baresi
LM Alessandro Del Piero
Mid Dino Baggio
Mid Francesco Totti
RM Alessandro "Billy" Costacurta
Fwd Salvatore Schillaci
Fwd Paolo Rossi
Fwd Roberto Baggio
Forza this great team!

Baring the anti-Zidane, I doubt you will have seen many of these play due to the fact they played in the best league in the world at the time. Not the most broadcasted league in the world.

Mmm, seems like a pop at the EPL?
There are some good and great players there but there is life outside Italy.

best league in the world? im assuming its around the 90's your talking about with the exeption of a couple like zoff. the champions league winners during the 90's were belgrade, marseille, milan, ajax, juve, dortmund, madrid and united. hardly dominate stuff from supposdly the best league in the world. the only real dominate team italy had was the late 80's milan team and you have only a few players from that team but have players like totti who have never performed at the highest level.

What!? No Nesta, Cannavaro, Tardelli, Fachetti or Pirlo? I'm outraged.

Re: The Greatest You've Seen
Even the most blinkered Italian would have trouble giving valid reasons for Marco Materazzi, Dino Baggio, Francesco Totti and Salvatore Schillacis selection.
As for the rest, few around the world could argue against Maldini and Baresi, Zoff and Rossi are as good a shout as any others picked in their positions and Roberto Baggio, Costacurta and Del Piero would get in many Italians sides, but would struggle to make 30 man short lists anywhere else in the world.

HOLT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was a big fan of Davor Suker for a while in the late 90's early 00's he was a quality striker. Gaizka Mendieta was another great player in La Liga for 3/4 seasons.

Anyone who doesn't have Ronaldinho in their team in wrong.
When he was in his peak he was unplayable.

Well, he's up against:
Zidane
Rivaldo
Platini
Messi
Maradona
Ronaldo
And a few more, so he's no gimme.
