I saw him do the after dinner at a charity bash, "Willie John called 99. Now, bare in mind I'm 22 and a lover not a fighter..." (he had a story to prove that as well)

Shoot that has spoiled my day a man who deserves his status amongst the greats and who fought hard to overcome his forced early retirement whilst in his prime.

Just heard on radio four. Made me sit down...!
A very troubled man who's magnificent career reflected what a wonderfully naturally talented athlete he was.
A light shined bright. Burned strong, failed to blow out no matter what gale passed has now finally gone out. May that light be remembered for its wonderful glow and how it dealt with all that challenged it.

Loed him, had 2 dogs named merve and swerve, based on the way they would chase each other around in circles and somehow never catch each other, seriously never it was baffling!

Really sad news. I loved not only his playing, but also his dignity and strength after the first tragedy which finished his career.

Twitter campaign for headbands to be worn as a mark of respect is gaining momentum. For the fans perhaps.

Re: RIP The Swerve
It is very sad to hear that the great iconic Merv the Serve Davies who was a truely outstanding player not in Welsh Rugby in the seventies but also throughout the whole of the Rugby World during that time has gone from us. It is a true measure of his greatness that Wales have tried desparately to find a similar like for like replacement for him since his retirement from the game in 1976. Does anyone remember Wales trying out other tall number 8's who also wore headbands and had moustaches such as Richard Moriarty in 1981 and then Paul Arnold V England in 1991?

What about the current Welsh number 8 Ryan Jones wearing a white headband tommorrow V France as a way to remember the great Mervyn Davies?

I think I heard on the radion just now that Wales will not wear the No.8 shirt this weekend out of respect.

RIP Mervyn.
No doubt his passing will be marked in some way at tomorrow's game, and it'll be impeccably observed. He deserves that respect.

Ryan's already been wearing headbands quite a bit now instead of the scrumcap, so I don't think it would be noted on many if he did that.

The intro to the news just said that the players will wear black armbands anyway. They didn't say about anything else, but it would be a nice gesture.

I am taking about a white headband instead of the black one he wears. Also he could wear a black moustache as well!

My father was at his last match in 1976. He has told me Merve may have died that day (from a brain haemorrhage) had it not been for immediate medical assistance.
RIP Merve.
I hope the players/WRU do something special to mark his passing.

Radio 5: good and bad -
There were loads of touching tributes to Merve the Swerve this morning from many of his contemporaries. And bless Auntie for releasing air time for that.
On the other hand at about 0900, the news announcer said that Mervyn Hughes had died - which may have been a bit distressing for the great moustachioed Australian bowler.

Re: RIP The Swerve
When I got into rugby in the early 70's there were a few icons in the game.
Mervyn Davies was one of those.
For me is is up there with the Willie John's, Beaumonts, Edwards and Gibsons of the game. I am quite sad today. I really hope that his countrymen can go out and win a Slam tomorrow in his honour. That would be a fitting and lasting tribute to the great man.
Thanks.
