Grandslam sealing kick
The final kick of the Wales-France game was a penalty to Wales in a very kickable position. Wales opted to kick to touch to win the game, rather than take a reasonable shot at goal and run the very small risk of it being run back for a converted try. Would you have made the same call if you were captain? Would you have been disappointed if you were Halfpenny?
It wouldn't have made a difference to the result, but to me something feels wrong about not trying to win by as many points as you can, so I would have taken the kick.

I though that myself. We need to show more enterprise in those situations. 19-9 looks a much better score! Our defence, scrum and work at the breakdown was on top for majority of the game so I couldn't picture us conceding had he attempted and missed anyway.

Re: Grandslam sealing kick
Noooo. kick to touch game over.
I know its unlikely but what if ..... The kick had hit the post and come back in to a Frenchmans hand. They then worked their way up field and scored a try and converted and we drew the game. What a way to lose a GS.
Ever since that Wales game at home to Scotland last the other year I have thought that anything is possible.

To me its a no brainer. You have a 7 point lead why risk the kick falling short or hitting the posts and having to play on. Even if it is unlikely that France would score you risk injury. Points difference is irrelevant. Kick it out and win the GS.

Wales had a winning lead. Time was up. The penalty kick might have hit the post, rebounded into French hands. Why give France a chance, however slight, of playing on to score a converted try and draw the game?

Just win the Grandslam. We discussed it and everyone said the same thing. "Get the Ball off the field now...!"

Seriously?? After a brutal 80 minutes of test match, Grand Slam achieved. Only one option to take. Why take that risk, granted a small risk, when glory is a touchline away?!

I agree with alot of you, job was done, the celebrations were starting. No unecessary risks, kick to touch and get some champers

Do you not remember what happened to Scotland in Cardiff a few years ago ?
Kick the ball out, you've won. Hardly a lesser Grand slam just because you beat a team by 1 score.

Dallaglio's remains the outstanding decision here when in 1999 with a 6 point lead he chose to go for a lineout to "rub it in" instead of taking the points on offer that would have put his team out of sight. The rest his history as Mr Gibbs said Take the W and move on if the points are meaningless

Re: Grandslam sealing kick
the win is the important thing- 19-9 , 16-9 no flaming difference- . You could argue it could make a difference in the previous games due to pts difference factoring in! but not in the final game where its 100% gs or a GS but a possibilty of a 6nations title and draw outcome!!!!!!
they did the correct thing- its a no brainer- shouldnt really be a discussion

Yeah that was not one of Dallaglio's finest moments was it.

Scotlands teams between them won one game out of 15 during the 6 nations period. The U20s were losing to Italy, who chose to play on rather than kicking to touch when time was dead. Scotland went on to score the winning try.
I can pretty much garauntee you the Italians wont be making that mistake again.

Billy - For me - it was his finest moment - I remember driving back to Cornwall the next morning and I was stuck in heavy traffic on the M4 between Cardiff and Newport for some reason. Anyways a large van in front had written on the back in the dust - "Honk if you love Scott Gibbs" - The whole M4 was blaring - didn't do my head much good.

If I were stood there and players were looking at my decision, I am pretty confident in my abiliaty and I would definately have tapped and gone! If nothing else just to show Phillips what it looks like!
