Fantasy Game for 2012 Majors, The Players and US-Based WGC's: The WGC Bridgestone Thread
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to Tournament Seven of the 606v2 Fantasy game for 2012.
Although this is the seventh of eight tournaments, new players are still enthusiastically invited - out of 360+ picks for the first six events, there have only been three winners selected!
Against each competitor's name below there will be found the initials (names for MK's, PH's and JD's) of golfers selected to date and therefore ineligible for future picks. (If a player has been selected twice by a contestant, and I didn't spot it, that event's choice is shown as d/q below - just the one so far, and immaterial to the competition as the golfer in question missed the cut.) There will also be shown money earned to date in $US.
RULES:
There are EIGHT events, FOUR Major Championships (just the PGA remaining), THREE WGC's (only one remaining) and The Players Championship.
For each event choose one golfer; you will not be able to choose that golfer again.
The prize-money your chosen golfer earns in the selected event accrues, notionally of course, in your account, but for that specific event only.
So, by the time of the completion of the PGA Championship in August, you will have selected eight players and, with good judgement, good fortune or both, have accrued eight pay cheques. The fantasy contestant with the highest accrued earnings is the winner.
For each event's new thread, the contestants will be shown, in alphabetical order, with their earnings to date and names of golfers no longer available.
Following the WGC Bridgestone, the remaining event will be:
August 9th - 12th: PGA Championship
The prize fund for The WGC Bridgestone is about $8.5M with the winner pocketing about $1,400,000.
You are advised to nominate a substitute in the event of a last minute withdrawal. Withdrawals, dq's etc during play do not earn "official" money and, as with Toms and Woods at the "Cadillac" mean a zero pay day.
For The Bridgestone, there will be no cut.
The field is not yet finalised, but the following players are all qualified:
Allenby, Baddeley, Bae, Bekker, Bjorn, K.Bradley, Byrd,
Cabrera-Bello, Chalmers, KJ Choi, Colsaerts, Crane,
Day, Donald, Donaldson, Dufner, Dyson, Els,
Fernandez-Castano, Fowler, Fujimoto, Furyk, Garcia, Goosen, Grace,
Bill Haas, Hanson, Hoey, Ishikawa, Jacobson, Jaidee, D.Johnson, Z.Johnson,
Kaymer, KT Kim, Kuchar, Laird, Paul Lawrie, Leishman, Tom Lewis, Luiten,
Mahan, McDowell, McIlroy, Mickelson, F.Molinari, Muto, Na,
Ogilvy, Oosthuizen, Pettersson, Piercy, Potter, Poulter, Quiros, Rock, Rose

Taniguchi, Toms, Van Pelt,
Wagner, Watney, B.Watson, Westwood, Wiesberger, Willett, M.Wilson, Woods, Yang

Re: Fantasy Game for 2012 Majors, The Players and US-Based WGC's: The WGC Bridgestone Thread
With Rory, Tiger, Phil and Luke struggling today, the Round 1 leaders have only been slected by a handful of canny punters:
ryan86 has Westwood
super_realist has Hanson
hibbz chose Dufffffffner
TheCleaver has Bubba
. . . . and none of the rest of us chose a player now in the leading 13! And The Masters winner these past seven years has been in the top 7 following Round 1!
KJ Choi and Jason Day have the most ground to make up just to make the cut, though Lukey needs to get moving.

Re: Fantasy Game for 2012 Majors, The Players and US-Based WGC's: The WGC Bridgestone Thread
I did wonder why nobody chose anything a bit out of the ordinary. Almost everyone picked McIlroy and/or Cocknose Woods, so either a lot of people are going to be challenging, or very few are, hence me picking Hanson.
Incidently I've got £1 each way on Hanson @150/1, which will net me £187.50 if he wins.

Incidently I've got £1 each way on Hanson @150/1, which will net me £187.50 if he wins.
I thought about Woods, but then thought there was no fun just following the crowd and decided to go for someone else. Though at the moment my reserve is doing better than my first choice.

I likewise chose The Duffer because I didn't think others would and because I love his completely unfashionable style/gait. It's not how, it's how many that matters to the Duff and that to me is what makes golf so great. Talk counts for nothing on the scorecard.
I had a bookie busting £2 each way @ 125/1 so he'll probably finish 7th in the end. I also did Bjorn & Kaymer before anyone starts thinking I'm a sage. The wife chose Westwood, Jimenez & Bubba so she's full of it. Conveniently forgotten she also picked Flower (sic), Mickleson & Quiros.

No one picked Kuchar, Stenson or Oosthuizen. The three leaders as of 4:20 Augusta time Saturday.
Mahan was neglected too.

The Cleaver should be feeling "smug"; an habitual winner of goldwolf's competitions and now the first big win in the fantasy game.
But there are five events to play, and there are 60-odd of us coming to get you, Cleaver!
Congratulations!!

Should have stuck with my first thought (Mickelson). At least I've got my Woods pick out of the way early, and won't be wondering about him for the rest of the season. Great shout by The Cleaver, well done.
Thanks Kwini.

Thanks Kwini & INW
Narrowed it down to an American winner and after a big F with Woods at the Cadillac, turned to Big Phil or Watson for the Masters and just thought that Bubba was being more consistent and getting slightly better results in recent weeks.
Shoots me up the leaderboard anyway and I look forward to the players and the other majors!

1).golfermartin: Keep an eye on Dustin as he hasn't played for two months.
2).never wrong: McIlroy and Westwood missed last year.
3).Good choices Faldo; hoping Lee does the business in Charlotte, his kind of course if he can read the greens.

Re: Fantasy Game for 2012 Majors, The Players and US-Based WGC's: The WGC Bridgestone Thread
Wasn't this the nonsense which unfolded something like this:
* Rory doesn't include 2011 Players in his schedule. US media has a field day. Says he doesn't like the course, but will play again at some point in future.
* Butch Harmon says Rory is too young to know what course he likes.
* Rory retaliates on Twitter, saying Butch is too old to be a golf coach.
* Butch further explains that he thinks Rory is so good he could and should play at all big tournaments anywhere.
* Later in year, Rory splits with Chubby/ISM, citing disagreement with direction, e.g. discouragement away from PGA Tour and avoiding big tournaments like the Players.
[Perhaps some slight embellishment to highlight my bemusement at all this - I don't know what the real thinking was, but on the other hand, neither do I care!]

No, I think Kwini will let you choose right up to the time the first player tees off.
It's just that some people might not be around at that time, and so can't get to choose.
That's why they nominate a reserve, so if their first choice withdraws, and the poster can't get to t'internet, they have a second chance.
The actual golfers deadline for registering their intent to play may be a lot sooner.
(Plus the fact that if I choose early, all the other posters know who to avoid. )

Damnation,
Soory if that's ambiguous. The field on the link details who is eligible, but the golfers have until Friday, May 4th, 5.00 p.m. to make their "commitment" to the event. At that stage the field can be considered to be final.
Contestants in this game have up until at least noon BST on May 10th to make their selections and I am grateful to never wrong for his clarification of that.

Kwini, tough one this week but I'm going to go for
Steve Stricker &
Louis Oosthuizen (Reserve)
Was being drawn to Jason Day for some reason, I feel he's due a return to form very soon. Hope I don't regret that come Sunday evening.
