606v2's Top 10 Movies of All time
First topic message reminder :
Given the Nuts best 50 movies of all time thread , and the disagreements we all seem to have with the movies and positions picked i thought it might be a good idea to see what we all thought were the best movies ever and to have our own 606v2 top movies awards .
A top 50 might be pushing it so how about your top 10 ?
Giving points to each (ie for your number 1 movie 10 points down to 1 point for your 10th favourite ) we could then make a list of our top 10 movies of all time .
What does everyone think ?
PM me with your top ten
The Votes are in and counted here is your 606v2 Top Ten Movies
1,The Shawshank Redemption - 113 points
2,Gladiator - 75
3,The Empire Strikes Back - 69
4,Goodfellas - 63
5,Pulp Fiction - 61
6,12 Angry Men- 59
6,The Godfather - 59
8,BladeRunner - 47
9,Jaws - 44

Top 5 or 10 popcorn films is a good idea - there's certainly a few changes to my list from the best top 10.
Interesting how many of the films people voted as their favourite didn't get any other points -
60,Anchorman - The Legend of Reg Burgundy 10
60,Battle Royale 10
60,Blade 10
60,Blow 10
60,Catch me if you can 10
60,Citizen Kane 10
60,City of Gold 10
60,Dead Mans Shoes 10
60,Ghostbusters 10
60,Horse Feathers 10
60,Ikiru 10
60,Leon 10
60,Little Miss Sunshine 10
60,Once upon a time in America 10
60,Shallow Grave 10
60,Superman The Movie 10
60,Synedoche, New York 10
60,The Crow 10
60,The Silence of the Lambs 10
60,True Romance 10
Only the highlighted films above were NOT someones individual favourite.

Cheers for putting the whole list up kenny! My personal top ten was
1. Once Upon A Time In America
2. Taxi Driver
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. Reservoir Dogs
5. The Godfather
6. City Of God
7. Pulp Fiction
8. Juno
9. 12 Angry Men
10. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly
Couldn't find City of God in the list - I'm guessing it is in tied 60th and has been mistyped as City of Gold?

Re: 606v2's Top 10 Movies of All time
Thanks for the effort Kenny - it's produced a good list and given me some good film recommendations.
My top 10 was
#1 - 12 Angry Men
#2 - In the Heat of the Night
#3 - The Outlaw Josie Wales
#4 - The Shawshank Redmption
#5 - Airplane
#6 - Saving Private Ryan
#7 - Blade Runner
#8 - The Empire Strikes Back
#9 - The Life of Brian
#10 -The Godfather II
I was wrong about 12 Angry Men not getting many or any other votes, but was correct about In the Heat of the Night - scored 9, all from my nomination...

Bridesmaids is actually quite funny. When the missus brought it I admit I tutted and had the raving arss knowing I would have to sit through a chick flick, but in fairness it is actually a funny film. I think it is better than The Hangover.

Have you seen that there is to be a over 60's Hangover type film with Micheal Douglas , Christopher Walken and Dustin Hoffman ?

I personally thought The hangover was walked all over Bridesmaids.

Its much better. I've always thought The Hangover was overrated, didn't make me laugh very much. Its a shame Bridesmaids gets a lot of 'chick flick' marketing, because its so much better than that - its simply a very funny film, whose principal cast happens to be female dominated, centred around a subject that generally appeals to women more.

Re: 606v2's Top 10 Movies of All time
My top 10 :
1. Saving Private Ryan (10 Points)
Arguably the best war film ever made, harsh, gritty and moving. Not embarrased to say I have had a wee bubble at the end.
2. Gladiator (9 points)
A big history fan and loved the cinematography and Ridley Scott's stylish direction.
3. Master & Commander : The Far side of the world (8 points)
Out of the left field this one but I'm a massive fan of Paddy O'Brian's books about Jack Aubrey and Esteban Maturin so was delighted when this was made for the big screen and captured the essence of the characters.
4. Blade Runner (7 points)
Another entry for Ridley Scott, brilliant performances from Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer re-defined sci fi with this one.
5. Terminator 2 Judgement Day (6 points)
CGI comes of age in the sequel to one of my favourite movies that was unlucky not to make this list itself. Fantastic action sequences and a good pace for a long movie.
6. Ingloroius Basterds (5 Points)
Quinten Tarintino's masterpiece. Great characters, witty dialogue and fantasticly filmed.
7. The Godfather (4 Points)
Does it need explained?
8. Full Metal Jacket (3 Points)
The Vietnam war epic that gave us all an idea of how bad boot camp could be.
9. Training Day (2 Points)
Denzel Washington's character of Alonzo Harris won him the best actor oscar for this one. No surprise since he was brilliant as the power hungry crooked cop.
10. Aliens (1 Point)
Whilst Alien terrorized audiences this one thrilled them, James Cameron's 2nd movie on my list.
Took me a while to think this one over.
Unlucky films included : Terminator 2, Fight Club, American History X, Sin City, Zulu, Black Hawk Down, Alien, The Matrix, Top Gun, Crimson tide....... the list could go on and on!
as for the worst I have seen :
1. Wrong turn
Poor Excuse for a horror movie, thats 98 minutes of my life that I can't get back.
2. Open Water
2 people tread water for 90 minutes.
3. The perfect Storm
A bunch of guys sail into a storm and die.
4. Atonement
What was the point in the last half an hour of that film?
5. Grease
Any film that encourages a girl to change everything about herself in order to impress a scientologist can't be a good message.

Blair Witch 2 was the biggest load of cack.
Blair Witch for what it was did deliver. The whole amateur filming perspective mixed with a legend is actually chilling to watch. When you have films like Cloverfield or Rec or the Paranormal Activity that followed only makes you realise in some sense how pioneering Blair Witch was even if you don't happen to be a fan of it.

Re: 606v2's Top 10 Movies of All time
thought the original Blair Witch wasn't bad, unfortunately the tabloids found it necessary to give the plot away & kill the suspense. don't think it was that pioneering though, Cannibal Holocaust & Man Bites Dog had been down the psuedo-documentary route before but was the first to capture the public imagination

You do make a good point with regards to it being a pioneer of that type of hand held camera type movie , and it did in some parts startle me . I just dont like that type of film , but i take your point .

Thanks Kenny,
It is a case of tickling your fancy. I remember when I saw ending of Blair Witch I had to rewind a few times just to get the gist of what happened as it was so sudden and random.

Bit surprised that there was no Ghandi, No Country For Old Men, Donnie Darko.

I think you need more than a pioneering use of camera to execute a good movie.
I didn't like Blair Witch because despite the use of hand-helds and the YouTubeish documentary feel, the parts just weren't adding up and so the illusion the film-makers tried to cast didn't gel with me.
In classic film-making, the illusion being offered is that there IS no camera but when you introduce a camera as a 'character' then you run into all kinds of trouble trying to keep the illusion of truth going.
For me, there are too many moments in Blair Witch when the camera has no justifiable grounds for still being on, or to be still observing the actions and moments needed to cause cinematic suspense. My mind rebelled too often and killed the illusion.
The same for Cloverfield. I didn't fall for the angles and too-slick approach to people running for their lives yet managing to capture all the good bits just for the 'folks back home'
