Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
The Chiefs are expected to announce the signing of Watisoni Votu, former Fiji 7s captain, in the near future: Votu to Exe - will give us another exciting backline option to complement the bludgeon of Naqelevuki, the speed of Jess and the wriggliness of Camacho
Happy daze!

How many foreign players do Exeter have now exactly? Funny how people don't take the urine like they did with Sarries. Maybe they will now you're a top team (I bet that sounds good )

Not too mention the power and guile of Ian Whitten. I'm going to miss that guy when he leaves. He's going to just the right club at just the right time. I'm sure he'll do well- we'll all be following Exeter as result.

Hey,
Steeno, Stevenson, Andress, McKenzie plus Tuohy going the other way not good enough for your support before?

Yeah, I've always kept an eye out for them but those players never really had significant Ulster careers before their time at Exeter. Apart from McKenzie I suppose, but he never made the cut with us. I dunno.
Whitten is a guy who has genuinely come on in leaps and bounds. I think Exeter fans will be pleased at what he brings over the course of next season.

We got squillions of foreigners - Irish, Welsh, Argie, Scot/Saffer, French, Maori, Kiwi, Aussie, Samoan, Fijians have all been accepted by the fans, but it's the success of the Cornish that really show the tolerance of the Exonian faithful.

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
Notch, it's like a big rugby family. As a Champiomship club, we became used to our better players being recruited by more senior teams. We're now in the unusual situation where some of our discards are playing for lesser clubs (like Wasps )It adds interest to follow players that we know well, playing for other teams.

Yeah, I just hope Sky Sports start actually showing your games! I guess they'll have to show at least some of your Heineken Cup games right?
I always liked Exeter, I can just never watch them play.

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
Hammerofthunor I presume you are wondering what the true figures say.
Exeter Chiefs according to their wiki page have 18 foreigners (non EQ) out of 48 including academy.
They do include Budgen as a new zealander though so you could scratch him off bringing it to 17 as he is EQ.
This is compared to Saracen's 16 non EQ out of 41 main squad players but 9 players listed as academy (16 out of 50)
Won't be too long till Melck and Joubert are EQ too.
Neither are as bad as Toulon's 24 foreigners out of about 47.

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
If you're scratching off Budgie, there's 5 or 6 more EQ'd by residency (or soon to be). Don't matter anyway, cos they're all Chiefs.
What they are doing is providing good rugby genes into English born future players. There's a couple of Hayes' who will probably be the first brother/sister to captain the England teams in about 20 years time, and Shoemark is the latest new father of a future England international. There must be something in the Devonian water (or the pasties).
All hail the fertile loins of the Chiefs

That's my point. You'll be more aware than most of the grief given to Sarries of their foreign players. But no-one blinks when it's Exeter. Double standards
I'm not really that bothered as we have more than enough players getting time and coming through. I'm sure that the U18 England side made up of about 60% Chiefs not so long ago will come through eventually (much like all the baby Sarries have done/are doing).

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
True hammerofthunor but I think it's the large South African contingent that has people frightened.
Exeter are building really well. They are just quietly going about their business. That's why no one notices their large foreign contingent too.
Sale Sharks and London Irish are are other sides who have plenty of foreigners but who cares?

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
Tis a fair point, Thunor, and one that we Exe fans must accept. The other mitigating factor imo is the nature of promotion in the Championship, the delay that causes to recruiting plans and the lack of English talent not already contracted after winning the Championship finalHammerofThunor wrote:beshocked wrote:Hammerofthunor I presume you are wondering what the true figures say.

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
All true. I'm not one of those 'English clubs are for English people' people. The clubs are there for their supporters/members and no-one else.
In the long term for Exeter to maintain themselves they need to be bringing people through (it also helps local appeal and increase support base). And as I already mentioned, from some of the England youth sides it seems the players are there, I just have no idea how far off they are from the premiership or how many are coming through now.
One of good things about Exeter, from what I've seen, is the attitude. Baxter has come out and said the target for this year is to do better than last year. Leeds came out in their second year that they were going for HEC qualification. Add in the good off-field and financial management Exeter have a real chance of developing themselves into a top club [edit: as in long term and sustained, Bristol made the playoffs and got relegated a couple of years later]

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
Agree HammerofThunor
I think it's truly incredible the progression Exeter have made.
They are not just an AP team anymore, they have HC qualification in the bag and a win vs Saints would seal a playoff place.
Simply incredible stuff.
Agree about the attitude - Exeter fear no one. Haven't they beaten every side in the AP now?

Are we the only side to have done the double on Tigers this season? (admittedly the Welford Road game was during the RWC)

Re: Exe to sign former Fiji 7s captain
Slowly, slowly, catchee, monkey on the youth lads, Thunor. Jack Nowell at fullback has had some first team experience in the LV= Cup, as have Sam Hill (IC) and Luke-Cowan Dickie (loosehead prop) from memory. The rest (Jack Arnott on the wing, Sam Jones at OC, Henry Slade at flyhalf, James Lightfoot-Brown at scrumhalf and fullback) have all mostly been out on dual-registration either with the Pirates or Albion, but will also have featured in 'A' league games. Given that they were all England U18 last season, that doesn't seem too bad in terms of progression.HammerofThunor wrote:All true. I'm not one of those 'English clubs are for English people' people. I think the other thing to bear in mind is that there is a very 'English' core to the club, namely the Baxter family. Rob's attitude has communicated itself to the players and they have responded. Our real challenge will come next year, when once again the lads are set the target of just improving on the previous year
