Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
Personally I think it's Leigh Halfpenny because he is extremely accurate but also has a monster boot and is also in a good spell of form.

South African record for most points in a test against Australia.
Fastest 100 points by a Springbok (8 Test matches, 3 as replacement)[8]
Fastest 200 points by a Springbok (16 Test matches)
Fastest 300 points by a Springbok (24 Test matches)
Fastest 400 points by a Springbok (33 Test matches)
Most drop-goals in a Super Rugby season (11).
Most points scored against the All Blacks for a Springbok (31).
Most points in a Tri Nations match (31).
Most drop goals in a Super Rugby game (4) (in the 2009 Super 14 semi-final against the Crusaders)
Most drop goals in Super Rugby (22)
Most drop goals in a Super Rugby season (11 in 2009)
Most penalties in a Super Rugby season (51 in 2010)
Most points in a Super Rugby season (263) – Beating Dan Carter's record of 221 set in 2006.
Steyn also holds the record for most consecutive successful kicks at goal in Test play since statistics for that category were first kept in the late 1980s. He had a streak of 41 successful attempts that ended on 6 November 2010 against Ireland. The previous record was 36, held by Chris Paterson of Scotland

Re: Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
Well he was the most accurate kicker at the 2011 world cup, the last time a "moment" occured when they were all measured in the same tournament,
Look when comparing best ever it is usually a subjective reasoning, but when it comes to best kisker, stats tell all.
Find stats over a measured period of time that is better than his.

It has to be Wilkinson.
Even though he has retired from International rugby, their is still no one who can touch him realy.

If we're talking about accuracy then its Peter Grant of the stormers hands down.... no one, not even Morne is close.
He was the top kicker in last years S15.
He isn't even in your list.
Unless the above players hit over 86% then Grant is the man... that was Grants ave. for the season last year and this year is no different. He is a machine.

Talking of goal kicking,I was very impressed with the big one from Cipriani last night.
Dan carter isnt that great a goal kicker, sure he might be the highest point scorer in the game, but a lot of that includes trys.

Morne Steyn. If it's not him, then it'd be some other SA player. Carter is not even kicking for the crusaders these days (prob injury related).

Re: Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
Morne Steyn landed more kicks than anyone at the WC. O'Connor, O'Gara & Morath weren't far behind.
Didn't Halfpenney miss the kick that would have sent Wales through to the final? He's made further out earlier in the game, maybe he's not a pressure kicker.
Wilkinson was poor in NZ.

More points, 45 to 44, but not more actual kicks, 17 (6 cons & 11 pens) to 18 (10 cons & 8 pens). Like you say though, in one less game. I didn't mean to give precedence to O'Gara, was just mentioning the better kickers in the same breath and the O' names naturally alliterated.

Re: Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
Morne Steyn by a mile,Dan Carter`s World points records include an awful lot of tries. His goal kicking can be very inconsistent,BUT who would you want in your team at number 10.As to has he scored a winning drop goal in a RWC what a stupid remark,I seem to recall a certain Bok doing it in 1995.HE was`nt the World`s best goal kicker at the time but he did the job.
Stats only tell so much,NOT for example weather conditions, altitude, type of ball etc.In SA at altitude in bone dry conditions, with a kicking tee you would expect to kick more goals.Than for example in wet and windy conditions with the old style leather ball and a pile of sand.
Don Clarke on the 1960 tour of SA kicked well over 200 points then without any of the modern aids.
As to TODAY,Tom Taylor at the Crusaders isn`t doing to badly for a newbie, another 31 points today[all of them[ versus the Stormers.
Truth is there are so many modern aids, plus dedicated coaches and better playing conditions, plus more chances at goal than ever.

Has to be Steyn or Carter.
I remember when Steyn set the new season points record in 2010.
Incredible consistency.
I don't know what ROG's numbers are but he's miles ahead in terms of scoring the most points in Heineken Cup competitions.

EVERY Goalkicker gets bad days,Morne Steyn had one a while a go missing 3 or 4 shots.BUT like Don Clarke before him many he kicks others would`nt even attempt. As far as he goes he is the biggest match winner in the Game,BUT like the Boot teams build game around him.attractive it isn`t and ultimately it diminishes the Team.READ "AllBlacks in Chains" Don Clarke played 30 odd tests
he was on the losing side twice but attractive its was`nt.

The article states 'world rugby' not international rugby. Jonny had an excellent goal-kicking game against Quins recently in the Amlin.Cari wrote:Being as the thread is "...at the moment" why is Jonny Wilko there? He's retired from international rugby now...

DC's hardly kicked a ball since his RWC injury - in fact he's lost the kicking duties at the Crusaders to Tom "Son of Warwick" Taylor.
Taylor, Peter Grant and Steyn are probably the top kickers in Super Rugby this season.

Yeah Kiwi, I mis interpreted the question. I was thinking internationally, not all levels. To be honest I don't see enough of the other international players at club level to know who's better than who.
