Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
Best goalkicker in world rugby at the moment?
First topic message reminder :
Personally I think it's Leigh Halfpenny because he is extremely accurate but also has a monster boot and is also in a good spell of form.

Went for Steyn, but Piennar is a close second for me (was majestic against Munster).

I was watching the Amlin cup the other night, and let me tell you Johnny Wilkinson has still got it, the man can slot them from anywhere and he has been like this all his career, he might not be the most dynamic, but when it comes to kicking his goals, well, he hardley ever misses !!! So for me, it is the golden boy, Johnny Wilkinson.

Morne Steyn for my money.
If the rest of his game was half as good as his goal kicking he'd be some player!

The rest of his game is about half as good.
He is still not "some player" though.

Taylor proved an admirable replacement for Carter on the weekend. Like his father he showed the same coolness under pressure and like all Cantabs he looked good in every sense.

No brainier - Morne Steyn by a country mile. Halfpenny has had one decent tournament where he didn't even start as first choice kicker - Steyn has been consistently the best goal kicker in international rugby since he broke into the Springbok team a couple of years ago.

Carter may have lots of points, but he's too much a streaky kicker to be the best - on his good days, he'll land everything from everywhere, but he has bad days too frequently compared with the ultra-consistent guys like Steyn or Patterson.
My one concern over calling Patterson the best kicker is that although he was very consistent, he lacked quite a bit of range compared with the other good kickers.
So, based on this, Morne Steyn has to be considered the best kicker in international rugby. I don't see enough club rugby or any S15, so can't give an informed opinion as to whether there is anyone better in these.

Great to hear that about Peter Grant. Not a chance will he come to Rodney though, but if he does that's great business.

I reckon the gap is only around 5% for the best kickers and form comes and goes-it's hard to make assumptions with such swings and roundabouts when you are saying 'at the moment'.
I'd say Morne Steyn internationally, but the margins are small. Carter's not far off and since he's world class at everything he does on a rugby pitch I'm sure a lot of people would take the few percent less off the tee from him and have all his other skills at their disposal.
Wilkinson missed a lot of points due to injury but Carter misses out a lot of games against weaker opposition where he could cash in. There are a lot of 80-100 pointers that would have given him 30 per game too. Could have been quite similar if those had have worked out.
