The Rabo and high-speed plate tectonics
In recent correspondences I was made aware of frictions between the Irish provinces.
But that led me to think of analogy with Gondwanaland and the structural shifts of the equally analogous continental plates of its components.
Scotland (Pictia)
In a nanosecond of geological time , the Border Reivers was crushed (which destroyed the fertile lands).
Wales (Cambria)
Being in the centre of the tectonic thrusts, the plate was fractured into a geological mush which has yet to solidify as fragments of the plate have survived and land passages exist although northern routes remain blocked.
Ireland (Hibernia)
Being on a safe, relatively nudgeable Western extremity of European plates, the formerly solid Hibernian plate is showing signs of internal fractures.
See article by Prof Red-Stag http://redstagrugby.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/elephant-in-room.html wherein he entertained the possibility that the thrust of the internal fractings may be a huge disruption to the Hibernic plate.
Italy (Apennina)
A recent tectonic collision which has thus far caused only minor tremors. Initial seismic recordings show only a minimal threat to the established continent. Recent observations however record that a local depression fault is expected to result in a frontal upthrust.
