Heineken Final - Are the airlines taking it too far?? Empty Heineken Final - Are the airlines taking it too far??

Post by clivemcl Mon 30 Apr 2012, 9:41 am

So we all know this is to be expected, but a normal weekend flight to London is about £100 with Easyjet, the Final weekend, Easyjet fair is now £600.

Is this just business, or is it exploitation?

Anyone who follows my posts on here will know I'm not exactly rolling in it. I've bought my tickets. My journey is as follows...

Friday : 10.30pm overnight ferry to Liverpool.
Saturday : Arrive 6.30am - Drive to London
Saturday : After match drive to Stranraer
Sunday : 5.30am ferry home.

Shocked Yikes! But its only £70 for each of us.

Apparantly its cheaper to fly to paris and get the Eurostar!

How is everyone getting to London, and how much are you getting skinned??

Clive, prices have shot up on commercial airlines.

Charter planes are a nightmare too as Chelsea are in the Champions League final that day.

Going rate is €380-€450 depending in who you book with.

Clive we are flying Derry to Stansted. We booked a couple of weeks ago and got 100 quid return for both me and the GF.

Not sure how much it will cost to get to Twickenham from Stansted though! Shocked

Clive, I take it your an Ulster fan taking that route ? I suppose it would be much quicker to get the ferry to Milford Haven, and then just drive down the M4 into London.

It is to be expected though. Its a major final so of course the airlines and any company that can get in on it wil hike the prices up. Its very similar to seasonal charges.

Post by clivemcl Mon 30 Apr 2012, 10:13 am

Yea but tbh, i can see less than half the attendance being either Leinster or Ulster fans. A lot will be looking to sell their tickets, and will probably be unable to because the flight prices will discourage a lot. For me, tickets and travel came to £170. Theres no way i could justify anything more than £200 on my salary. Maybe those with more money than me could pay for some of those flight prices, but a lot of genuine fans might simply be forced to miss out.

If we don't get the fans over, i fear for the atmosphere.

I think it can still be cheap enough if people are willing to wait till Monday to come home. Can anything be done to ensure more of the teams fans manage it across?

Flying to Manchester at 7am on the sat. Train down to London gets us in by noon. Returning the next evening via same route. Cost about 160 before overnight accomodation

Look into Mega bus. I live in Cardiff so there is no real problem for me. But any time I need to go anywhere Megabus is some hit.

£10 return to London last time I went. Still need to book now though.

I had flights from Dublin to Bermingham (have a lift from there) for 55 juros on Saturday.

Booked them just after the final whistle yesterday (while trying to get my heart rate back to normal) and they cost me 175 each.

Feckers!

You actually will probably be better getting a Ryan air flight to Eindhoven and from the to London, that would be a hell of alot cheaper Smile

Actually you London based boys I have a question.

Arriving Friday early evening into Liverpool Street and leaving Monday morning.
Whats the cheapest way to get around - can you get a 3/4 day Oyster card or something

As far as I know Megabus doesn't go further west than Cardiff (may go to Swansea) - Greyhound is the same, only goes as far as Swansea (I use it when ever I'm going to a Scarlets game - £3.50 Cardiff to Swansea, then local bus) - problem is you'd need a ferry to Swansea and not Milford Haven

I would pick up an Oyster Card, they cost £5 but you can get that refunded if you return it. I suspect that just loading on £20 on pay-as-you-go will be your best bet, a zone 1-6 weekly pass is around £45-£50 and they don't do 3 day passes Sad.

Make sure you always swipe in and out when entering/leaving a station or they'll charge you £7.80 on top of the daily cap (Swiping in and out http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14873.aspx mad ). Otherwise, all of your travel except Monday morning before 9.30 will be off-peak, prices are here http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx

Liverpool St is in Zone 1, Tickenham is Zone 5 (or 6?) while Richmond is Zone 4. Travelling through Zones 1 and 2 is the expensive part, so if you're staying out near Twickenham and don't go into central London on Saturday/Sunday you won't spend too much

As per Kiwi Reddevil Twickenham is Zone 5 and Richmond in 4 - would stay around there if possible. Richmond in particular is a good night out and is very rugby friendly, Twickenham is also OK lots of pubs along the main drag.

As they are likely to be playing somewhere around the ground I'd recommend catching the Bible Code Sundays if you like your craic with ceol.

Anyone up for a 606 meet ? guinness guinness guinness guinness guinness guinness Ale Ale Ale Ale Ale

A combination of me being very drunk at the final whistle and my missus not really understanding the significance of the rate of change of flight prices proportional to the time from the final whistle means that I didn’t book flights on Sunday.

Which is a really killer as I can only travel on Saturday, Friday is not an option at all. and Aerlingus want €500 for the pleasure. B0ll0x.

Train to paddington, get into WWW.thetrainline.com and book your ticket on that today, it'll be much cheaper

Fly back from southampton on the Sunday for 123 euro with flybe, its only an hour and a but from Clapham junction, you can get a ticket for that on the same website as before

DOn't take any advice off anyone who says to get a ferry to Milford Haven, I live there and we do not have any ferries. If you want to get a ferry, Pembroke Dock (or Fishguard) are two options, and both do have train services (I believe).
