Tigers vs Barf - Page 3 Empty Tigers vs Barf

Post by formerly known as Sam Thu 03 May 2012, 1:34 pm

First topic message reminder :

Tigers vs vomit this weekend at Welford Road. Bath will be stinging from their LV Cup Semi Final loss where their strongest available team was beaten by Tigers A League regulars (plus a couple). That should add some spice to an old rivalry which will also be important for both teams as Bath will be hoping to sneak into next years HEC whilst Tigers will want to cement their home semi place and maybe even catch Quins.

So what teams do we want?

My preferred Tigers team:

1.Mulipola
2.T Youngs
3.Castro
4.Skivington
5.Parling
6.Mafi
7.Salvi
8.Waldrom
9.B Youngs
10.Ford - can't afford for Flood to pick up an injury
11.A Tuilagi
12.Allen
13.M Tuilagi
14.Agulla
15.Murphy

Bench: Ayerza, Chuter, Cole, Kitchener, Newby, Harrison, Twelvetrees, Hamilton.

lol, the ref makes another error. The ball is tapped back by a Bath player and Manu catches it. He gives it as a knock on against the tigers.

Thanks Nathan, that made interesting reading.

I felt Tigers were very nervous. It seemed that players were trying to avoid getting injured. Of course the management were taking no risks. Youngs (Ben) and Skivington were pulled late on with minor niggles they would play through next week. Salvi and Flood were whipped off as soon as they took serious knocks.

It meant for a long while that things were disjointed. Bath seemed to have little interest in playing rugby but were extremely physical, right on the edge (and often over) of legality.

The ref seemed determined to demonstrate he knew exactly what was going on in the scrum. It is hard to know from the stands, but when your team had driven the opponents 5 yards back and are controlling the ball at the base it is a shock when the ref decided you are to blame for a collapse (twice).

We never looked like losing, but until Allen's try it was sqeeky bum time. After that the team settled down - shame there was just 20 minutes to go.

We will need to be better next week.

I think all the top teams had their eyes firmly on the play offs LT.

Worryingly Saracens went out and performed best, but maybe they've now used up this seasons quota of tries?

I've just watched the highlights, so can't comment on his performance as a whole, but from what I saw it just confirmed to me why I feel Twelvetrees must go to SA with England. He was instrumental in the major breaks and tries (not much mention of that in this topic?). Yes, he was playing the more pivotal role of FH, but he displayed vision, quality & timing of pass and general ability to bring into play those around him that he also brings to IC.

There are a couple of quality options at IC, but Twelvetrees offers something quite different from them and it is something we have to explore in the midweek team.

I think we would see dynamic stuff selecting the lovely line picking and stepping Joseph outside him (again looking exciting in the highlights of the LI game), a powerful quality FB like Brown and then exciting runners with pace like Wade & May on the wings, or another powerful runner like Benjamin.

It was disappointing that with both Quins and Tigers going for top spot, Sky opted to show the Saints v Wuss match. With Exeter away at SArries and Sale fielding a B Team, surely the Saints match was pretty much the deadest of rubbers.

I must admit that I was suprised to see the continuing score updates showing just the 3 point lead for Tigers, but in the end it became academic whether they scored 3 or 30 tries, since Quins won. Evidently Barf played very negatively and frustrated Leicester, but quality won through in the end. It will be a tight affair next week I feel, but I think Tigers will edge it.

Congrats to Tigers, a controlled 2nd half. We scrapped well in the 1st half, but class played in the end.
Gloucester must be purring with Twelvetrees heading that way! He'll be the glue of that backline next year at 12. Good tip for playoffs next year I think, with likes of Morgan also arriving....

As for Bath. Clearout required. The names on the team sheet are not as bad as our performances have been.

Problems for Bath are that there's too many average names on the team sheet and the pack is not nearly strong enough. Tigers dominated the scrum and from the look of the only penalty Bath scored they were somewhat fortunate to earn that (I've only seen the highlights). Front row, second row and another backrower should all feature on the Bath shopping list for next year with a centre thrown in as well. James and Webber are good starts for the recruitment but they'll need more than that. Gold will demand some grit from the players as well so at least your team will be a bit more nasty next year.

Agree entirely FKAS, the Bath pack have been reversing most of the season and the lineout has been dire at times, I would have loved for Jenkins to have been signed but for whatever reason Bath pulled out of the negotiations, I would guess that there may be a couple of Saffers signed over the summer to bolster the front row.

The lock situation is a little confusing at present with Attwood, Hooper and Caldwell established and Day coming from Scarlets, another signing there would suggest the exit of one of the established 3, but a lineout specialist is an essential addition for me.

Personally I would say the backs have plenty of potential, but would like to see a good international standard 13 being signed, the backs haven't really had much in the way of opportunities this season as there hasn't been a platform to play off.

After making so much noise about it, it will be intersting to see who Craig bankrolls as the marquee signing.

We see 36 play like that one week, and then the next he forces too much and his passing is awry. He was good, though in a lot of ways the hard work had been done and he came on at the right time to face a Bath team completely on the back foot. This gave hime a lot of space to use - and when you do that he can cut anyone apart.
