So I gather Tim's son plays for Manly when he's not playing for the Reds.

LB, are these all amateur clubs, or are they semi professional?

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Semi professional. It's simply the Premier Grade competition for Sydney which has been going for over 100 years, BB.
They're generally amateurs, students, youngsters just out of school, etc but with some old heads (professionals) as well coming back into the mix when the international fixtures are over.

Laurie,
I'm not sure if Sam is playing for the Marlins this year... he may well be doing so once the Super XV season is over.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Yes mpc, they're still the weakest side but they have come close in a few matches this year. Instead of getting walloped by more than 30-40 points each match they seem to be doing a little bit better this year. Still no wins though.
Penrith is a very strong RL nursery with players/coaches getting snapped up by other RL clubs... yet it's a very different situation when it comes to rugby. I guess the good local players migrate towards the more established clubs with more history and prestige. I hope their situation improves though.
The Two Blues (Parra), on the other hand, were unlucky to lose to the Beasties on Saturday. They were leading with a few minutes to go but blew it. It would have been 4 wins in a row for them but it was not to be.

They beat Randwick 21-19 on Saturday. Landmark achievement from the Emus.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
That's a huge result for Penrith LB. And at Coogee as well. Red faces in Randwick.
Do you follow a club mate? I live up the road from Easts, but only follow via the paper and the match of the week on telly.
Great to see The Two Blues doing better. If rugby could develop a greater presence out there, the impact could really make a difference.

Go the Emus!!
The first game i went to see when i first got to Australia was Penrith vs Randwick, Im pretty sure they had Duncan McRae and Chris Whittaker playing for them and they put 40 odd points on the Emus.

When I lived in Sydney I used to do the audit for the Gordon club.
Interesting to turn up at 9am to see plenty of people already sitting there with beer in hand playing the pokies.

Yeah, I follow Gordon, boomer.
I grew up in Manly (but never followed them in rugby unlike in RL) then moved to Lindfield when I was very young... so always followed the Highlanders in their glory days of the late 70s. I also have a soft spot for Norths living in Willo now.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Sorry folks, I've updated the latest table and most recent results.
I've been carried away with the Wales tour and I let this lag behind a bit.
Billy, Southern Districts are doing really well.
The big game is on at TG Milner next Saturday against leaders Eastwood. Could be a GF preview?
Although I also think Uni in particular and maybe Manly will challenge for the finals.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Table updated after Rd 12.
The Manly Marlins came back from 17-5 down at half time to beat Eastwood 25-23 in the match of the day at a sunny T.G. Milner Field.
Southern Districts had an upset 21-22 loss against Norths at Forshaw, whilst Gordon's miserable season continues. They are now last after their one point loss to the Galloping Greens at Coogee Oval. The Wick Curse continues...

This might be a stupid post - but does Russell Crowe own a team in this league?

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
No Dodger... he's more of a league man.
He went to Sydney High who are the cellar dwellers of the GPS schoolboys rugby competition (sim. to your Public Schools). So he probably wanted to distance himself from rugby union and associate himself with Souths RL who were/are still based at Redfern... not far from where he used to go to school.

Hmmm - I just seen a programme on TV of Russell Crowe's team playing Manly which is in the above table - thanks anyway.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Maybe it's the same team that plays league (or used to) up at his farm around Coff's Harbour.
He broke his leg playing league... and that was about 8 years ago?
Was the programme you saw about his team playing the Manly Marlins (Shute Shield) or the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles (NRL)?

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
I imagine it was the latter if the Sea Eagles are the League side - my team (Ulster) signed a full back called Adam D'Arcy from Manly I think from the Sea Eagles.

Split round 04/08 and 11/08
The Woodies hung on to a 1 point win over Uni at T.G. Millner. (13-12)
Southern added to the Beasties misery with a 41-32 win at Woollahra Oval.

Linebreaker, spike to a good mate of mine that plays for Uni, he said that the Eastwood game was a real step up in intensity and standards from the rest of the games played this year...
Interesting now with Rep players coming back...

Yes Owain - that was a very tight match indeed and hopefully an indicator of the finals to come. I believe any of the current top 3 now could win the GF on their day. I look forward to the upcoming matches.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Some interesting scenarios possible for the final round next weekend:
Easts must win to assure 7th place in the final 8 playoffs. If they lose to Manly at Manly Oval, then they will remain on 36 points or 37 if they get a bonus point.
Warringah Rats play bottom-placed Penrith Emus at home so they should at least finish on 37 points or on 38 with a bonus point.
West Harbour Pirates must beat Randwick at Coogee - with a bonus point - and hope the Beasties lose without a 1 point bonus. They would then be on 37 points. 36 points is not enough for West Harbour given that they have a worse +/- differential than Easts.
If Randwick win at home then the final 8 teams will remain as is - the order of 7th and 8th will depend on the Warringah-Penrith and Manly-Easts matches.

He went to Sydney High who are the cellar dwellers of the GPS schoolboys rugby competition (sim. to your Public Schools). So he probably wanted to distance himself from rugby union and associate himself with Souths RL who were/are still based at Redfern... not far from where he used to go to school.
He's still an All Black fan though Linebreaker!
Where or which league are Canberra Vikings in now? I played in Brisbane in the early 2000's and they were part of our league funnily enough, I think they had a falling out with the Sydney clubs? They were pretty brilliant but being the Brumbie's B team you'd expect that. I lined up against Matt Giteau (he must have been barely 19) and he schooled me completely. We lost by 100 pts in Canberra and 70 pts in Brisbane at Ballymore - though we took it to them for the first 20!

Of course he is... the double-timing baastard.
However, he doesn't follow this particular comp. It's all NRL for him... and the All Blacks.
Sadly the Canberra Vikings are no longer around - players would most likely be playing for the Brumbie's feeder clubs in the ACT's Premier Division (John I Dent Cup) which also has a team based in Queanbeyan, NSW. The Tuggeranong Vikings are a separate club in this division but not related to the now defunct Canberra Vikings.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
An upset of sorts with last years Grand Finalists, Eastwood, eliminated in today's Semi Final at Manly Oval by Norths. Final score 22-17.
So they will play Uni next weekend with the winner going into the GF.

Southern Districts are through to the Grand Final after demolishing Manly in the Preliminary Final this afternoon.
After a tight 1st half with the scores locked at 10-all, the Rebels came out firing early in the second half with 2 quick tries early then a steady stream of points to record a 41-22 win at T.G.Milner Field.

Re: Shute Shield 2012: Results & Table
Sydney University have won their 27th Premiership after beating Southern Districts 15-14 this afternoon at Concord Oval.
Southern started the match with more intensity and they were rewarded with a try to Nic Cummins after some good lead up work from Ben Volavola and Sami Latunipulu.
Trailing 14-6 midway through the second half, the Students showed a lot of patience and discipline to keep the Rebels pinned down in their own 22 for multiple phases before receiving another gift 3 points for a ruck infringement.
Minutes later, after a break down the left hand side, Tom Carter went over 10m in from the LH corner. Conversion was successful.
It was a tough match. The big Rebel backline was a handful for Uni on more than one ocassion. They always looked dangerous on the attack. However, the experience of Uni told in the last quarter when they controlled possession, gained field position and systematically wore the Southern forwards down. They then took advantage of a tiring defence midfield to get across the line in the end.
Ken Catchpole Medal for Player of the Year: Hamish Angus (Warringah Rats)
Shute Shield Rookie of the Year: Jed Holloway (Southern Districts Rebels)
David Brockhoff Medal for Coach of the Year: Cameron Blades (Southern Districts Rebels)
