From Cheetahs to Scotland? - George Earl
From the Volksblad with a crappy google translate afterwards:
Any comments from our South African friends?
Sou hy wel deur Griekwas vrygestel word, sal hy hom by die Cheetahs-stut, WP Nel, by Edinburgh aansluit.
Haggis, Scotch whiskey and the poetry of Robert Burns will soon be the Cheetahs lock George Earle's future if he recieves approval from the Griqualand West Rugby Union (GWRU) to join the Scottish club Edinburgh.
Griquas CEO Arni van Rooyen confirmed Earle have requested that he be released of his contract at the end of the Super rugby tournament as Edinburgh has offered him a deal. It is up to the GWRU specifically coach Pote Human, whether he feels the slender lock will be leaving or not.
"I can confirm George asked that his contract to be revoked after the Super Series. This decision rests on head coach Pote Human, "Van Rooyen said.
Last saturday Earle was once again one of the stalwarts for the Cheetahs in their narrow defeat against the Stormers. If he was to be released by Griquas, he would join the Cheetahs prop WP Nel, in Edinburgh.
Although Earle has established himself as the central region team's first choice to lock , the Cheetahs do have plenty of depth.
The Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské currently have Izak van der Westhuizen, Waltie Vermeulen, Andries Ferreira and Francois Uys in his squad.
Griquas currently has enough locks in their arsenal, especially Edwin Hewitt, lighthouse Landman and Jaco Nepgen who is playing superb rugby in the Vodacom Cup.
Hewitt and Landman should again be the Griquas lock pair for the final Friday in the Diamond City, and their performances against Western Province should definitively show whether Earle's future could lie outside of SA.
Earle left the Lions to join Griquas not only as a substitute for the injured Martin Muller and Frikkie Spies, but also to play Super rugby.
He was very successful at the Cheetahs and should be of great value to Griquas.
There is however, speculation at Griquas that the carrot of possibly representing Scotland at the World Cup in 2015 is the real motivating factor.
On present form, he will definitely be in with a chance to make his mark in Scotland, but before he puts pen to papaer should ask hiself what happened to players like Hendrik Roodt, Jacques Lombard and Brendon Snyman.
When these three locks were performing well, they went searching for greener pastures, yet failed to make sgnificant impact elsewhere.

Does Scotland have anything like the project player rules in place? Or caps/regulations for the number of NSQ players in their two sides?
Sounds like a useful signing if they could grab him, but I thought Edinburgh were alright for Locks?

Edinburgh can't sign a lock.
It goes against everything that they stand for.

I'm pretty sure the Scarlets have been linked with every cheap second row and prop that's out of contract this summer to be honest!
