Juan Carlos Ferrero - what a waste of talent
No wonder he is called Mosquito coz no one knows when he gonna bite, current match against Monfils is a proof of his awesome talent, his anticipation, forehand, backhand, movement are still good for a 30 + year old, but what stinks is his lack of hardwork to enhance his skill and talent.
He was one of those guys who beat Nadal on clay at his prime sums of up his story.
I hope he has a good tournament this one, coz his game is still fun to watch.

Good to see him winning but lets not get overboard about the guy. A great player no doubt during 2001-3, but tennis times quickly moved beyond him. He's clearly a very good claycourter but not that expcetional...13 titles is modest amongst clay greats and he didnt really achieved major significance beyond that. Re: Nadal, he's 7-2 up against Ferrero...we know one loss on clay was here at Rome and due to heavy blistering on Nadal's feet - Ferrero in 2007 is never beating Nadal on clay! The other was a close 7-6 7-6 win at Cincinnati HC in 2006. His 1 French Open win was against Martin Verkerk. Did well to get to USO final in 2003...albeit in those twilight years between Sampras and Federer. Nice to watch but he hasnt got the weight of shot to hurt players much since 2003 and has only won titles since 2003 at lesser clay events - Morocco, Brazil, Argentina, etc.

@ Lyd
The problem with Ferrero is the weight in the shot like you mentioned, but his skills are too good and they haven't vanished yet.
He doesnt qualify as a clay court greatest, but certainly at his best he is more than a good player. He deserved his ranking as well as his GS at his prime.
One win not gonna do anything special, but still the win came against a very good defensive player, and it was fun to watch some skillful play on clay court by a clay court specialist.

Re: Juan Carlos Ferrero - what a waste of talent
I'm a fan - his all-court ability was shown when he had two good QF runs at Wimbledon in recent years and played some very entertaining stuff with soft hands and good skill where necessary.
To me he's a typical top player of the 'transition generation', skill (perhaps underrated), an ability to keep going and keep fighting, longevity (Roddick and Hewitt could still play good stuff and digg out decent results years after they were No. 1) but not the all round game to survive to a top standard after the end of the Sampras-Federer transition period. With Ferrero and Hewitt it's weight of shot, with Roddick its a varied game to accompany his heavy forehand/service - none of them seemed to have it all. Like Roddick he was worth his brief No. 1 status, but he was never likely to get it back once Fed got going.

I liked his battles with Kuerten... http://www.atpworldtour.com/Players/Head-To-Head.aspx?pId=K293&oId=F316
Kuerten I felt brought out the best in Ferrero. But boy, what a talent Guga was...

Re: Juan Carlos Ferrero - what a waste of talent
Ferrero had he stayed fit could have been a big threat to Nadal. Nadal's biggest competition on clay was against players who's worst surface is clay.
I think Ferrero, did he not, get injured shortly after winning the French Open in 2003? I think that pegged him back because he retired injured in trying to defend in 2004, he also lost motivation after he won the title.

Re: Juan Carlos Ferrero - what a waste of talent
Bit harsh, I think Juan Carlos the King is one of the more well rounded clay courters who can do a bit of everything. But I also agree with those that posit that Ferrero was part of a group of transitional champions like Hewitt, Safin, and Roddick as well who while very talented pros where quickly overwhelmed by the Nadal, Djoko, Murray, Berdy, Tsonga, and Gazza class of players that came around. Still I think Ferrerro is a quality guy and a good champion. I don't think he would have much chance of winning a slam if his prime coincided more with Nadal and Djoko but he was one of the best clay courters for a number of years on tour.

He lost motivation when his mother died.. He decided to carry on because it is what she would have wanted. He has a wonderful Tennis Academy here in Spain. Putting a lot back into the game by coaching and bringing on youngsters there.. He is indeed a fantastic player and a lovely person
