The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat. The Pub has followed the victorious Leinster team home after last week's Heineken Cup final for a liver-busting celebration.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the picture of the late Simon "Human Windmill" Pitney or those of all the HEC and Amlin Cup finalists.

Just been told off - every other place in the village is decorated with tons of red white and blue - but so far we are not.

Why would they expect you to join in if they know you aren't British?

Did the gym. Delighted now.
I realised on my way back that I have two pre-seasons this time thanks to Risca and Brize Norton. Not looking forward to that one bit.

Can someone just pass me a drink please, the strongest you have, trying to convince Heyneke Meyer supporters of anything that is not blue is frustrating.

Ah Hound. I thought it would be a nice way to rebuild historical bridges. Germany & Britain share a lot of the same History and Royal Family. And we are all European now.
Besides, it was tongue-in-cheek bud and I would take de pish out of the Clogs (also German Royal Family) Irish or Yanks as quickly.
P.S. The Swastika is over 3000 years old and has long been a symbol for good, more than any other symbol and across so many ancient cultures.
Its just one guy who misused it.
The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" meaning "good," "asti" meaning "to be," and "ka" as a suffix.

Morning all
Glas I agree entirely but I would stop short of telling them to Feic Off or put up "alternative" bunting. We've had enough of that over here for years without it spoiling one weekends celebrations over there.

Yes. Here it goes in tides. They same people who cry and beat their chests during the anthem in a Grand Slam decider will have their union jack bowlers on Tuesday. Big occasion people we are. That's why the regional stadiums are half full.

Pete, no problem. I understand how people feel about the monarchy in different parts of the UK and Ireland. I hope the weekend can be a celebration of the longevity of a remarkable lady. The other issues won't go away but maybe they can be parked up for a few days.
Thats all.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
Bore da pawb / good morning all. I don't have any problem whatsoever with the Jubilee - apart from the unnecessary expense of it. My main gripe at the moment is the obligatory excitement about the Olympic torch's tour of the UK. It's causing problems wherever it goes (I work in construction so you can take my word for it) and it's just one big sop. Since the start of the modern Olympics, it's been a city that wins and hosts the Games, not that city's country. I'd much rather they didn't pretend that this is Britain's Games. It's bad enough that they've diverted millions of pounds of Lottery money from the rest of the country to tart up a scruffy bit of London.
But I like the Queen and the Royal Family bring in millions of pounds of tourist money every year. I'm not going to stand in her way if she wants a party.

Lovely sentiment Rava, but Mam's birthday was back in April. We did forget about her health issues for that weekend though

The Olympic torch is coming to Ireland too. I think. there are certainly Irish athletes who will be carrying it anyway. Bernard Brogan tweeted about it the other day.

It is Mick. It arrives in Belfast on Sunday, makes its way up to Portrush on Monday. It starts its journey in Coleraine on Tuesday and via Derry and Omagh heads south to Newry and then to Dublin. Back from Dublin to Belfast on 6th (Wednesday) and then heads off to Scotland on Thursday afternoon.
It will be very close to where I live on Sunday afternoon in celebration of this fellow: -

I don’t understand why it’s coming to Dublin to be honest. I’m not complaining though, it’s nice that we get some of the Olympic pageantry without the cost or the hassle.

I wonder whether they cancel the olympics if the torch burns out before it gets to its destination?

Back in 2000 the torch relay came through NZ befor the Sydney games - seems it's one of the "done things" to show off to the neighbours. And last Olympics the Chinese gave the torch a run through London - I don't know if the current relay pops over to Rio though.

Kiwi, I was in the 'old' Sydney Olympic Precinct today. I actually had lunch in the suburb of Newington which was created from the Athlete's Village. Quite nice seeing the place populated... schools, shops, nice homes, Avenue of Europe, etc...
I've nothing against sharing the joy of the Games. I think it's a good thing. Should be more of it. There was all this talk about people leaving the city for 2 weeks to escape the madness... but those same people raved on about it all afterwards.

I thought you liked sport?
Seriously. It was a surreal buzz for those 2 weeks. It's hard to describe. Because I was involved in the masterplanning for the years leading up to it - it was even more of a thrill. I got a real kick seeing people from every nation on earth with smiles on their faces and exploring their newly created environment. Athletes do some very naughty things you know. Hilarious behaviour.
The South of France is beautiful too... but if I was there I'd probably be glued to a big TV screen for most of the day watching the Olympics.

I can't wait for the Olympics, it's always great when it comes around; I just won't feel that it's somehow Wales's Games as well as London's just because the torch has been here.

Yeah, it's a sop alright. An attempt to make people feel better that their taxes are paying for Londons games whilst important public services are hit by cuts.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn ERC 2012 Commemorative Pub, Dublin
When I was on Samos in 1990, we were intoxicated with Gibbo's least favourite drink and for some reason were walking out of the town in total darkness when I saw this tiny TV screen flickering in the distance in a farmhouse.
It was the World Cup semi final I think... and we somehow managed to attract the attention of the owner who was about 100m away.
It took him ages... but he slowly walked up to the fence by the road. I asked him "Was-sa-score?"
I got the dirtiest of looks... he turned his back on me without uttering a word and trudged back to the bright TV screen again.
