England v West Indies, 2nd Test - Trent Bridge
First topic message reminder :
England unchanged. Rampaul and Shillingford in for the Windies.
Windies win the toss and will bat. A great toss to win - runs galore today.

Ooh overturned, quite rare. Umps have generally been backed by hawkeye so far.
Least the windies have some pride from the game. Samuels has a good case for runner up in the MOM awards to Bresnan

So the game is still live at lunch...wouldn't have expected that this morning.
West Indies showing a lot of fight , trying to preserve that unbeaten record at Trent Bridge since 1936 or whatever it is...

Spirited resistance from Samuels - a very solid and patient (and occasionally lucky) 50.
Shame a few more of his compatriots couldn't follow his example...I never like seeing a lone batsman struggling futilely while his team mates are skittled out.
Looks like England won't have much over 100 to chase. Should be a formality...well, it should be...

Unless the West Indies try and convince Curtley Ambrose to bowl for them in England's second innings!

I am sure 100 odd will be quite enough to make trebell very nervous , and cause gboycottnut to prophesy disaster
Mind you , we still need two wickets and I have given up on predicting what turns this match will take next...

Should the West Indies consider moving Samuels up the batting order, perhaps to number 3 if not opening their batting and bring in someone like Brendan Nash into their middle order.

I know what you mean , billy
Shouldn't really be a problem here but there is always the nagging fear .."What if..."
Not very happy with the tactics after lunch ... It is Samuels and Shillingford , not Lara and Chris Martin: why not just attack them both , let them try to score , trust your bowlers...

Samuels hits out now at Swann...4 6 6
This is the downside to using a spinner ...
Jimmy will want to wrap it up this over - he has Rampaul on strike.

Good point. Samuels does seem to have the temperament of an opener...mostly quite solid and patient. He can certainly accumulate. I would try Sammy at No.3, or else move him up to 6 or 7. Haven't seen Nash play recently so I can't really comment, but it does look like the Windies need to do a fair bit of reshuffling.

Brendan Nash is currently playing in County Cricket at the moment and scored a hundred at around the time before the first test at Lords so he certainly is in good enough form with the bat. Somehow he hasn't played for the West Indies since April 2011.

Wow.
Samuels goes all berserker on Swann, clobbering 16 off what turns out to be the penultimate over, before Anderson has Rampaul caught at slip without scoring.
WI 165 all out. England need 108 to win.

Eire, it is also a ruddy good effort by England to be chasing such a small total after the first innings of both sides.

Without a doubt Fists but when you see the mess the Windies were in yesterday you have to give them credit for getting this many runs.

Painfully slow going at the moment...or I suppose you could say slow and steady progress. 35-0 after 13 overs. Strauss picking up where he left off in the 1st innings...Cook too from the look of it.

Still probably as we've ballsed up from easier positions before, didn't want to jynx it. Samuels should probably be motm
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test - Trent Bridge
Bowlers win you games. Bresnan likely to be MoM, along with his runs he probably just deserves it. Wouldn't argue with Samuels, though.
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test - Trent Bridge
Been a bit of a funny match - England have twice been in positions where they could really stamp their authority on the match (first morning and after day 2), but the Windies got back into it. Even this morning the Windies have shown good fight, but it looks like they'd got into too big a hole this time and England should be able to knock off the runs (started the run chase well, which is always a big psychological plus when chasing a fairly low total).
Large parts of the match have been competetive - the Windies have probably had the best of about 4 sessions of play, but have been seriously undermined by the bad sessions they had (first morning, second afternoon and evening, third evening). There is the basis of a half decent team, but they need to find more quality in the top order batting and some more consistency in their bowling performance (pity the Archangel was injured after a fairly impressive debut match).

Tend to agree (see my earlier post) though I suspect it will be Bresnan for eight wickets on a real road.
But if Strauss finishes on 60 not out ...

Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test - Trent Bridge
Dummy : I agree it has been competitive , but would really only give West Indies the better in two sessions : the last one on day 1 and the first on day 3. They have certainly shared two or three others , but overall they have been fairly clearly outplayed.
Looks like a nine or ten wicket win for England , which is slightly unkind to West Indies...
Even so , they have made England work for the win , as they did Australia at home recently .
Progress ... But they need a lot more from the top order bats.

There is quite a gulf between the two sides if i may be honest. That is no slight on the Windies but they just arent the class of England right now but they do have the makings of a team that can be very competitive.

Deary me, Strauss lucky not to be caught there. For some reason Ramdin doesn't even try to get a glove on the thick edge behind.
England sailing blissfully toward victory at 69-0.

In the sense of getting out lamely?
How about Samuels, highest run scorer only out once and 3 wickets now
Itll be Bredvan though

Strauss is a good shout alfie...at least as good as anyone else.
I'd throw Bresnan's name in there too for his 8 wickets in the match. Got both Samuels and Sammy in the Windies' 1st innings and shared the work with Anderson in routing them in the 2nd innings.

And seeing Samuels got him (third scalp for the game!) I am happy to award him the prize

Strauss might only be out once and isn't far off being top scorer in both innings.
Bressie would be a worthy candidate too.

Bugger - should check the score before making posts like that.
Oh well. Strauss, together with Cook has guided England to within a whisker of victory.
Trottsky and The Cap'n to bash the winning runs off in a jiffy.

There we go then. England win by 9 wickets. Very comfortable run chase, as expected, really.
England seal the series, and are 2-0 with one to play, beginning at Edgbaston after a 10 day (or so) break.

Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test - Trent Bridge
Glad we didn't make a hash of that 108 run chase! 2-0, will probably make it 3 at Edgbaston if the weather doesn't interfere but credit to the Windies who have made this series tougher than the Indian series last summer. I think that makes it 7 series won on the bounce at home now:
2009 - Beat Windies 3-0, Beat Australia 2-1
2010 - Beat Bangladesh 2-0, Beat Pakistan 3-1
2011 - Beat Sri Lanka 1-0, Beat India 4-0
2012 - Beat Windies 2-0 and counting
Only one country better than us at home right now and that's India who haven't lost a home series since 2004, we'll put that right later this year though...

5 bowlers is not a magic bullet.
Do you have any stats on when 5 bowlers worked well? That could set forth a decent debate. Just cherry picking stats to suit one pov is not very useful really....
I don't think 5 bowlers is a silver bullet, it's just better than watching Trott and Pietersen try and give the 3 seamers a break.....for (on average) an increase of about 10 more runs! In fact, I'd reckon if we have FINN as the 3rd choice seamer, putting Bresnan in at 7 (Prior at 6) rather than Morgan or Bopara or Bairstow etc would give us MORE runs....

I'd reckon also that we had Finn as the 3rd seamer for both of these 2 test matches V West Indies with Bresnan as the 4th bowler batting at 7 with Prior at 6, England would have won both of the tests by an innings victory.
