Ireland Team vs Barbarians
First topic message reminder :
Ireland XV (Team & Replacements v Barbarians, Kingsholm, Gloucester, Tuesday May 29th, 19:35):
15. Keith Earls (Young Munster/Munster)
14. Craig Gilroy (Dungannon/Ulster)*
13. Darren Cave (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)
12. Paddy Wallace (Ballymena/Ulster)
11. Simon Zebo (Cork Constitution/Munster)*
10. Ronan O'Gara (Cork Constitution/Munster)
9. Conor Murray (Garryowen/Munster)
1. Brett Wilkinson (Galwegians /Connacht)*
2. Mike Sherry (Garryowen/Munster)*
3. Declan Fitzpatrick (Dungannon/Ulster)*
4. Dan Tuohy (Ballymena/Ulster)
5. Donnacha Ryan (Shannon/Munster)
6. John Muldoon (Galwegians/Connacht)
7. Chris Henry (Ballymena/Ulster)
8. Peter O'Mahony (Cork Constitution/Munster)
Replacements:
16. Rory Best (Banbridge/Ulster)
17. Ronan Loughney (Galwegians/Connacht)*
18. Donncha O'Callaghan (Cork Constitution/Munster)
19. James Coughlan (Dolphin/Munster)*
20. Paul Marshall (Belfast Harlequins/Ulster)*
21. Nevin Spence (Ballynahinch/Ulster)*
22. Andrew Trimble (Ballymena/Ulster)
The match won't be televised, which is a real shame.
It's also worth noting that no Leinster players were considered for this game due to having played in the RaboDirect PRO12 final on Sunday.

Re: Ireland Team vs Barbarians
So Boss is out of the tour and opportunity to take a look at Marshall is squandered
Gilroy plays a blinder but isn't on the plane
Trimnble not Best comes on as a forward
Then again this game cant be real - that midget Tuohy wins line ball consistantly and is replaced by the giant that is DOC and we lose the lineout - that cant be right

Can't argue with that - Spence should have already had a number of caps in some competitive games IMO

Well, we learned feic all from that. Nobody knows the full story but congrats to Zebo/Gilroy and it seems like some of our tries seemed to be pretty creative

Re: Ireland Team vs Barbarians
Ha ha...its was a flippin game against the baa baas to give some of the non leinster players game time before the trip.
Marshall was there just as cover nothing more. Maybe if he got game time at Ulster he might have more of a chance the Ireland team is not a development squad.
Pity about Gilroy he is way better than Trimble who seems to have gone into his shell again.
Anyhow clearly as everyone here saw the match and are also very balanced in their views..

Spence (i cant make the HC team and can only run in a straight line so should get a game) 99.

Who should tour as 3rd choice 9 DOD?
Gilroy a guy who hitherto has not got s look in gets two trys and makes the break for another. We can't read much into this game but those 'stats' don't stack up well.

Stringer...watched him with Sarries and Newcastle and he was excellent....
Gilroy should go...he is like a mixture of Keith Crossan and Shane Williams.
Rory its because he isnt on the intl panel..but he doesnt make the HC team in the end...

As for Spence only being able to run in a straight line..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULYj6KXqFPE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuXMxxHdDJw
He may not step like Earls, but he has a great swerve and a lot of skills, even if we haven't seen them as much this season.

Its not about the future its about the best players going....only one obvious one missing - Gilroy...rest are obvious given our lack of depth in the front row.

Spot on Rodders. In the popular Midget or Giant game:
Marshall v anyone - Midget - height is soooooooo important at scrumhalf as proved by Mike Phillips
Gilroy v Zebo - Midget (although they're actually the same height Zebo has a much higher score in scrabble)
Best v Trimble - Midget - Everyone know that height is far more important for a backrow than skillset, just ask EOS about Easterby.
Tuohy v DOC - Midget v Giant of the game (who is also giant crack especially in the lineout lifting spirits and has got some decent punchlines)

Exactly. Finally some truth into the ever so curious tale of why Stringer suddenly becomes Mr.Can Do No Right one fine year in yonder days of yore..... ie, post WC fiasco 2007

Or does the new Ulster coach want all his players for preseason? Wallace, Jackson, Ferris all staying at home this summer. Pienaar will be away as well, so his absense will cause real problems for Ulster's preseason.
The lineout that was lost was due to D Ryan taking someone out when in the air. Not sure if Andrew Trimble is much of a lineout option

Pienaars absence is neither confirmed nor denied yet. Du Preez has been named Captain for the England tests and Hougaard is there, so we'll have to wait and see whether he's in as third choice or not.
New Ulster coach doesn't start work until next week. From an Ulster point of view I do hope Paul Marshall is left home though, because he's not going to be within an ass's roar of seeing gametime should he travel. And I do not believe he is or will ever be truly international standard.

Disagree Clive.
Looks like earls got up quickly but couldn't stop his momentum. Cave and Wallace weren't quick enough in as secondary tacklers. The type of score a scratch side would concede. Familiarity will help get them there quicker.

Surely RTE could have sent at least one camera man there? Useless fekersh.

Sorry, my bad, got confused cause the camerman didnt keep up with the play! (cant get the staff these days).
We cant see if itwent through the hands of the big backrower, but earls certainly got drawn to the number 6, and Tindall got outside him.

Not the only English centre to get outside him.......
Ah well, I have to say I'm fairly impressed I thought it would be much worse if I am honest so well done to the boys for the effort. Would love to have seen it.
Would also love if Marshall had got on but oh well.

2 minutes what a farce.
did rog play the whole game? did we even have a back up 10?
try looked inevitable at the end. tindall on the burst from 5 yards with baa baas making yards at will is going to be hard to stop. lets not demonise earls, cave whoeveer it was. its hard to see.

Surprisingly for a game involving the Barbarians there was a flare-up amongst the forwards which resulted in a warning for French hooker Benoit August and Irish number eight Peter O'Mahony. good on pom

Not the only time there was a bit of agro - seem to remember Marcus Horan flooring Alan Quinlan with a box in the last Baa-Baas game in Thomond !

Cheers pete. At least we have an ok (I hope) replacement for Ross who's injured. It's going to be scary when he gets replaced during a game. The AB's are going to murder us at scrum time!

Fitzpatrick ain't so hot around the park now though is he? He still has a fair bit of fitness left to gain no?
I'm worried about the scrum but the All Blacks are the masters of open field play and a not very fit tighthead will be noticed by the All Black think tank. I hope Fitz isn't put at the back of the lineout as a tail lifter

Re: Ireland Team vs Barbarians
I was talking to Dave Ryan (ex Munster prop, think he has been called up by the US, now playing in Italy) and he was saying how our attitude to scrummaging needs to change. We expect hookers (moreso than props) to be great in the field and prioritise it ahead of scrummaging. He was helping out with some of the young lads at our club and he kept talking about how in Italy, younger lads are taught better technique at an early age. They are also taught to scrummage in bare feet, helps maintaining balance. It's an interesting point.
