Paul Williams.
Apparently he's been in a crash and is likely to be paralysed!
ATLANTA -- In a decorated career in the boxing ring, Paul Williams picked up three belts and the nickname, "The Punisher." Now, Williams has a bigger fight ahead.
After a Sunday morning motorcycle crash near Atlanta, Williams is likely paralyzed from the waist down.
Manager George Peterson told News 12 that he's in the hospital with a surgery scheduled for Wednesday. That surgery will be to stabilize the healthy upper half of his spine by putting a protective wall around it.
Williams was schedule to fight Saul Alvarez for the WBC Light Middleweight title Sept. 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The product of the Aiken Boxing Club has a career record of 41-2-0, with 27 knockouts. He's the two-time holder of the WBO Welterweight championship and has held the WBO Light Middleweight belt once.
News 12 will keep you updated on any developments in this story.

Just read that there also. Sounds like he is paralysed from the waist down but they are trying to save the upper part of his spine.

Re: Paul Williams.
Terrible news. Hope he makes the best recovery possible; such a shame, however, as I was saying just the other day on the Canelo-Williams thread that I still think he had something to offer.
I wish him all the best.

Terrible news. Was looking forward to Williams-Alvarez but this is so much more important. Can only hope he makes a proper recovery.

Really sad news. I thought he would be a good test for Canelo but as others have said this latest fight is much more important. Thoughts are with him.

Omg, poor guy. He has just got back from a brutal knockout and a heavy beating (Lara) and now he is facing something no-one could foresee.
Really hope that the first reports are not correct and he can still maintain the ability to walk. Our thoughts are with him

News is that he's been told by Doctors that he will be paralyzed from the waist down after the procedure. Absolutely awful news for anyone to hear.
I'm trying to find a source for you guys now.

Manager George Peterson has confirmed a report by Augusta, Georgia’s WRDW-TV that southpaw former two-time welterweight titleholder Paul Williams was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday near Atlanta that has rendered the fighter paralyzed from the waist down.
Peterson corroborated the initial report that Williams' crash occurred on Sunday morning. Peterson said Williams is hospitalized with surgery scheduled for Wednesday that is intended to stabilize the healthy upper half of the fighter's spine by putting a protective wall around it.
"That's to protect the remainder of his spinal cord, and that will enable him to use his upper body movements," said Peterson. "But from the waist down, though, his movement is totally gone. He won't be able to walk again."
Peterson told RingTV.com that his assessment of Williams' condition was made by a doctor.
"We're going through this healing process, and we don't care whether or not he will ever box again," said Peterson. "Our immediate concerns are seeing Paul heal to the point where he can be moble. Other than that, Paul is in an excellent frame of mind and he's in excellent condition, mentally."
In a bout that is being promoted by Williams' promoter, Dan Goossen, in association with Golden Boy Promotions' CEO Richard Schaefer and President Oscar De La Hoya, Williams (41-2, 27 KOs) was scheduled to challenge WBC junior middleweight beltholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KOs) on Sept. 15 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on a pay per view network to be determined.

Awful awful news. I had a close friend killed in a motorbike accident and I have never sat on one since. You can't fall off a car.

Awful news - I'm the same age as him and can't imagine what he must be going through...
Some people go on to recover better/faster than doctors could imagine so here's hoping that he beats the odds and walks again...

I hope you're right, as boxing doesn't exactly have a great track record in this regard.
Terrible news, especially after recent events. I have always had a pathological fear of motor bikes, despite never having been on one, and it is news like this that reminds me why.
I really hope he makes as good a recovery as possible. Boxers have incredible will, so hopefully he can use that to lead as full a life as possible. I have a very, very close friend who suffers from a degree of paralysis in his legs following a rugby accident. He came to terms with his physical limitations very quickly, it was the mental trauma that he struggled to deal with. It took him years before he reconciled his accident in his own head. For a 'normal' person it is bad enough, but for a sports person, having that ability to compete taken away is very cruel.

general consensus is he'll never walk again
I know I heard, I think that was under the first prognosis. After surgery they will know the full extent. You do hear of some stories were people are told they will never walk again and miraculously develop movement and eventually learn to walk again.
Just hope he's one of the lucky ones!

Apparently it's 100% that he'll never walk again unfortunately. He snapped his spinal chord when he hit the ground. This surgery is just so that he can hopefully have full use of his upper body.

Re: Paul Williams.
I was somewhat relieved when I re-read the article, I originally thought he was paralysed from the waist up. That would have been far worse, at least he won't need 24 hour care.

Re: Paul Williams.
My brother phoned me to tell me the news this morning, horrific!
Sounds grim but like others have said all I hope now is that he's financially secure and also has good people around him and he can mentally handle this.
Wishing you well, Paul.

Re: Paul Williams.
Very sad news. This sort of thing can come up out of nowhere and shatter you mentally, not least when you have the strength, skill and promise of a fighter like Williams.
It doesn't sound promising but I wish him the best recovery possible and all the best for the future.
On the only plus side, he had achieved at least some of which he was destined for. At least this didn't happen before he'd won any of his defining fights at all. Unfortunately we may now never know what else he might have gained.
