On the whole lock, bigger is beter conundrum, I think American football is probably a good sport to take a look at here. They measure your vertical leap and your wingspan. So a guy who is 6'1' can in fact be a smaller target than a guy 6'5'. Espn do some great features on stuff like that, see this vid.

DOC doesn't deserve to start but is a good squad player. Ryan and POC deserve to be first choice Tuohy is after that. Toner/DOC fighting it out after that. Not much between them really, Toner takes it for his great game at the weekend and I suppose we know what DOC is capable of. Let's see someone new. DOC still has his uses but is winding down.

agreed we have two world class players - drico and poc and they will not be for much longer
we have many quality proven international standard players - kearney,sob,ferris (not far of world class these boys) sexton (3 HC's in 4 years age 26 not hit heights for ireland yet but nowhere near as poor as made out by some),bowe (bit of a lull but try scoring record is great),best,ross (he plays scrum survives simple),heaslip

players of real potential earls,fitzgerald,o mahony,murray

could go on but wont. we have lots of very good players in this island. Ireland lack depth at tight head, lack real quality at scrum half but other than that our biggest issue is simply with a coach playing negative rugby which is clearly not working as the results have shown

lets see if the penny has dropped. selecting rog over madigan to play a meaningless end of season game v the baa baas would worry me. Scotland finished last in 6 nations this year but blooded some youngsters and were unlucky in first 3 games. They are attempting to evolve their team and style of rugby as are England who hammered us with a relatively young inexperienced side

Make no bones about it if we continue our downward spiral of the last 18mths and to play a pig headed archaic style of rugby we will be fighting for wooden spoons in a half empty Aviva within the next few years.

i live on in hope as always rodders. Ive tried to be optomistic about the irish rugby team in the run up to the world cup thinking deccie had something up his sleeve and would come into his own but this last 6 nations campaign drained the last of it. its stale

they tease us with an occasional great performance but revert to type typically the game afterwards to a game based around pods of walking forwards garryowens and box kickng the bejaysus out of the thing. its not fun to lose lots of game especially boring the pants of us in the process

i will doff my cap to mr kidney if he turns things around and makes us a real force at international level honestly i will. nothing personal against him. however we need to see some green shoots and willingness to evolve quickly.

id rather 3 good competitive performances in defeat blooding the likes of zebo,pom,tuohy etc than getting beaten out the gate playing crap rugby in the first two games then winning 15-12 in a dead rubber of a test against a weakened NZ in a hurricane. though great and an achievement it would just pull the wool over our eyes.

Surely McComb will be not only starting for Ulster but also for Ireland as he is 2" over the "minimum" height for an International lock?

Why - he seems very suited to backrow now?

He played there once at 6 on his debut, and did a good job but I have seen him play much better. I went to school with him, and he played 8 in his junior career, before having a huge growth spurt and moving to second row, then finishing his last year at 8. At 6 foot 6, I think we should be looking at developing him as a second row, where we have less depth overall. Too many 6s already in Ireland..

If a player shows aptitude for a position he should play there, until it's proven that he'd be better elsewhere. Ulster need a succession plan for Ferris and Iain might be worth backing. His innate ability to carry at pace is far more useful in the backrow than at lock.

Rory's his mucker so I respect his view on this ... but I like the cut of that lad Henderson's jib at blindside flanker..... thats all I'm saying......

From the u20s six nations he looked like a lock and seems to have a load of potential there, then again Docv2 was the same yet Munster are playing him in the backrow because they have a stupid number of locks. I think both of them will end up in the second row.

Now, DOCv2 looks like a 6 to me honestly. He seems to have even more pace than Hendy. Reminds me of that welsh guy Shingler.

If he can play second row and back row then thats all the better for Ulster, Ireland and most of all Henderson himself

Personally I think hes a bit on the slow side but his major weakness is adapting to playing on the flank. He looks to be as though he could do a passable Thorn/Botha impersonation. Time will tell I suppose and if it means he gets gametime with the first choice pack before eventually moving in, all the better for him and Ireland.

I didn't think anything of his pace until I saw him come on for Munster against the Ospreys I think it was. He shown real pace around the park.

Thought Munster have far more backrows than locks even with the retirements? At U20 DOC2 looked like a backrow to me (Brian Hayes looked more like a lock) but his vital statistic is 6'5" which apparently consigns him to the dustbin of top class locks!

Ulster need a 6 before they need a Lock. As a lock Henderson will get virtually no game time next year.

Yeah I've never been man but I have friends that go every year, it's meant to be brilliant. Thinking of heading down this year but we shall see .

So you see Henderson getting a good amount of game time for Ulster next season? Regardless of position that is a plus.

As things stand he is in our shadow backrow along with Diack and Birch and of the players being covered Ferris is going to miss a lot more games.

I see 6 being a fairly even split between Ferris, Diack and Henderson next year, at least as things stand.

Geoff, you would think we could grab one of the Sharks back row no? Since we have two players from there, and the Sharks have about 6 quality back row players, not all of whom are currently getting game time due to the competition? Daniel, Kankowski, Coetzee, Alberts, Deysel, Botes. Surely one would be tempted? Any of those guys would be a start for Ulster honestly.
