When Does It Count?

In the statistic about a player you can read about number of appearance for the club and also number of times "cap" by the international team.

I don't understand exactly what is this "cap" about. Because word mean about a limit. So is some colloquial meaning I think.

Does any poster know when is counting the "cap". If you are name to the combinator for the tour but not in the line up does it make one? Or if you are on reserve bench but not make it to the field does it counting? If you make on for blood bin replacement and off, then is it count?

Is this rule by IRB of by home union? Who make up the rules? And is it a consistency?

You have to run onto the field in the test match to get a cap awarded to you.

Sitting on the bench but not running on does not award you a credit of the match.

The same applies to first class caps as well.

Just had a look and Dan Luger didn't get a cap for his infamous cameo vs. Samoa in 2003. He was playing for more than a minute.

Two, I pointedly answered the question to give it a mature direction.

From what I have seen so far the immature responses have not come from where you expect.

So imo there should be Caps (like club caps/appearances) and Test Caps.

Is it me or is this site doing strange things today?

Shane Philpott thought about selling his AB cap on EBAY before reconsidering. Poor guy is the butt of many jokes about the worst or one of the worst ABs. But a cap is to be treasured especially for a team like the ABs.

This is very interesting comment,because once you are named in a Squad you become an International presumeably.Therefore technically capped,BUT it does`nt count as a TEST Cap unless you get on the field.Back in the days of FullBlown Tours,players were Boks,Wallabies or AllBlacks or other teams.When I discussed this with friends at the time,we made distinctions between who played Tests.With those who only appeared in Tour matches versus Club/Counties/Province etc.As an example Kevin Barry a versatile Forward at Prop/Lock/loose forward made 2 tours in 1962-4 period but was not "Capped" in the Classic sense tho a full blown All Black.

Richie McCaw technically doesn't have a test cap by that logic as his feet never touch the ground when he comes onto the field.

Alan in SA you become a Springbok when you get selected as a member of a touring party, but may only wear your Springbok blazer once capped.

You can also be capped by the mafioso, but generally you would want to avoid that.

Well that one comes under the shooting one but I didn't have access to your machine gun emoticons to emphasise that one.

Hi,Biltong was the Blazer bit in force during the old style tours,because obviously there would be team tour photos etc.for the media.

Alan not sure how and when this came about, Supersport was interviewing one of the Boks recently, I can't rember who it was, they spoke about the tour to Europe when he got his first international cap, and he said he was relievd to get his cap cause it meant he could wear his blazer.

I will see if I can find out who it was.
