"South Africa Will Cheat" - Page 2 Empty "South Africa Will Cheat"

Post by anotherworldofpain Fri 01 Jun 2012, 7:43 am

First topic message reminder :

Good morning fan of rugby and welcome to almost 4 day jubillee weekend and more important almost international season for rugby.

My riddle today is about the article in Evening Standard I read while stuck in the tunnel by Edgware road again yesterday and was some shock that I make a noise by accident and frighten some tourism around me.

"... the locals will take great pleasure in testing him to the limit with late tackles, blatant foul play and insults delivered in that most aggressive of accents — Afrikaans."

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport/rugby/england-must-attack-the-big-issues-7807450.html

Is some scandal? Do you think to write like that South Africa will cheat? I was a bit ashame of my new country England journalism is my mind to be honest. Most also because the discipline not so great in some England player recent times.

If anyone can combat late tackles and blatant foul play with late tackles and blatant foul play, it's Hartley. Bet a fiver he finds the sin bin at some stage during the series.

I'd take that bet. Hartley has only been shown yellow once in his international career (39 caps) and that was for hands in the ruck.

Obviously this twerp has neve been to Glasgow (or Leeds or Birmingham or Liverpool or Manchester or....well you get my point)

What a plonker.
If I could add to this, how about the lower east side of Manhatten or parts of Brooklyn. Those are aggressive accents to make your undiies bunch up nice and tight.

But overall, not a bad article. But that statement about Hartley is childish (ie. plonker).

I find Biltong very aggressive when he uses the red pen.

But I do think the article is a little OTT, I dont think they'll be as bad as they were when they came over to England in 2002.

Its gonna be what its gonna be- we are expected a close to impossible task. It wont be easy and SA are a winning team- They more than any other want a win over a style. So the article is probally true, but its sentiment is just so flaming obvious

Just the one? Had a few bans though huh, and for some pretty blatant foul play. The fact he hasn't had more shows he's sneaky, doing the old 'cheap shot', like the elbow on McCaw's noggin. Anyways, just thought the journo picked the right man for the job in Hartley. SA will lap it up.

Two bans, one at the beginning of his career, 5 years ago, at club level. The other recently for biting the finger of a player that was fish-hooking him at the bottom of a ruck.

The fact that he hasn't had more is because he doesn't do almost any of the stuff that people mythologise he gets up to. In reality he's been involved in about as many real incidents as Saint Mealamu.

People have been thinking they can target him to their advantage at club and international level for a number of years and it consistently fails. In fact it more often ends up backfiring.

I'd happily take the money of anyone betting against history of him being carded in an international match for dirty play or retaliatory action.

I didn't say they weren't serious, just few and far between.

The bet offered was for him being yellow carded. He wasn't yellow carded for the biting. My statement that he has never been yellow carded for dirty play or retaliatory action in his 39 international caps remains true.

If you bite someone whilst they are fish-hooking you, is it about retaliation or primarily about stopping the fish-hooking?

Anyone force-feeding someone a finger should not start crying because they get a nip, and yes 6 months for eye-gouging is very serious, because eye-gouging is very serious - well, over here it is. Over there you get 6 weeks and call the victims ballerinas! Laugh

Fair dues, fish hooking someone aint cool. Looks like I may be down on a fiver. Perhaps it's a misconception, similar to SA being exponents of blatent foul play and high tackles, as the journo stated. Sure there's been some things over the years, but for the most part, they just play hard but fair.

It's a non-story, if Hartley were playing his rugby in South Africa - he'd still be abused in Africaans for being English, that's the way it is.

It used to happen to Mike Catt for the same reason, so why should Hartley be any different?

Bokke rugby is what it is and I love it.

PJ,
Couldn't agree more, bro.

I like how EBOP described SA Rugby: play hard. play fair.

Doc. to me South Africa is the place to go on tour to test yourself in the sense of ultimate physicality. It's like a rite of passage to rugby manhood, I reckon a few of the youngsters will grow up on this tour, but one or two may fade away.

Biltong and I have had a few laughs over the supposed "Bokke thuggery" angle, in terms of discipline at the last WC, England were far worse than SA.

Putting it simply NZ like to find new ways of getting round defence and SA like to find new ways of going over it.

I'm cool with that. Cool

To me that is what makes rugby the greatest sport. It is different for every country, there is a collective love for rugby in all these test playing nations, but the culture and meaning of rugby is different for each nation.

Some pride themselves on one style and others on another style, but essentially it is the unique style of each country that is what is different than any other sport.

In South Africa when you grow up and play rugby at school, it is that "right of passage to manhood" that PJ is talking about. It is there where you learn to be tough as nails ( we're still a bit primitive in that sense)

That is why I often proclaim my feelings toward the fact that there must at all times be a unifying factor, a representation of your own nations rugby culture in your test team. Club rugby with its multicultural teams will never give you that. Well for me anyway.

Morning boys!

When I was in uni we went on tour to South Africa. Was terrificly intense and physical. It was an incredible physical challenge, which really meant we had to remain mentally strong for the full 80, match after match, and training session after training session. I learned a lot about focus and intensity which stays with me today. Multiply that many-fold for the England test players and this is becomes a great time and place to learn about each person and the team in general.

PJ, I like your comments, especially about being a rite of Rugby manhood. Great statement.

Biltongbek, I also enjoy seeing the national Rugby culture played out on the pitch. Truly one of the points which separates International Rugby from club. I thoroughly enjoy both, but for different reasons.

Breadvan, I always thought Bismarck always sounded rather German, as in 60 years ago German. But is a real tough sounding name. Once given that name, he could never be a scrum-half, eh?

I just figured it out, the broken English, adopted country etc, OP must be = Borat. So watch out for a possible new movie after the tour, working title:

"My new country menns battles for pride of Afrique Sud " or something like that.

"You can't prepare for it. You have to feel it," said Catt. "Stuart Lancaster has been sending emails for the past three or four months saying 'prepare yourself, prepare yourself, prepare yourself'.

"Brad Barritt did a presentation for us last night in connection with what to expect from the country and what to expect from the people - but when it comes onto the pitch it is fierce, it is brutal.

"I remember us going down in 2000 and we played the first Test and then we couldn't train until the Thursday because we were so physically battered by it. These guys are going to have to be mentally tough and I think the environment we have created at the moment is going to put us into good stead."

countryfolks interest in inflicting physical harm on england players

No mate, there is nothing in there that tells us about "interest in inflicting physical harm on england players", it just says it is a physical place to tour.

AWOP, there are only two ways you can handle this incessant reference to your nationality/identity/use of grammar.

1. respond to it and it will never stop.
2. Ignore it and eventually they will tire of it.
