The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sixmilebridge
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to the homeland of the wonderful Eirebilly, who we were all horrified to hear that he was involved in a helicopter crash on Friday. Better news though is that he's awake and swearing like a sailor, so no change there Feel free to take in all of the pubs, of which the Greyhound is but one of many.
Updates on Billy's progress can be found here: https://www.606v2.com/t30132-eirebilly-op-updated-02-06-2012 and I'm sure we'll all continue in sending the positive thoughts and good wishes to him and his family.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the snooker table, brought in especially for Billy. And I'm not quite sure how that picture of a sheep got above the bar.....

So...you were protesting about the availability of the library?
And, there is a difference between grumpy and angry.

Yes, but its non availability fed into underlying tensions. I won't pretend it was the only cause, but it helped ramp things up from a bit of jeering and mildly offensive banners. It gave a focus for young people who thought we had grown up and moved on from Caernarfon 1969.

Was it worth it?
Or should have spent the day studying with such books as were available instead?

Blydi hell, i thought I was being uber organised about my birthday, but turns out I should have started planning sooner!
I want to go and see Les Miserables in London for it, and most of the affordable tickets are already sold out
Got a choice now between the weekends of 14-15th or 28-29th July. Hadn't wanted to make my way up on either of those weekends as I was supposed to be doing things back here, but they're the only weekends around my birthday that my best mate in London is around for (and as it'll be a girls weekend we should be staying at hers). Hmmm, decisions, decisions...
I will never forget my experience of witnessing "Les Miserables" in London. It was a sensational show. Enjoy it!

Ugh, I have a job interview for an apprenticeship this Thursday.. I have already sat an english and maths aptitude test for it, and performed a practical aptitude test also. Passed both thankfully. Last stage is the interview, and I MUST pass this as well. Unemployment has not been pleasant, and this is my first real interview. Anyone got any interviewing tips? I sat a mock interview earlier in the year, but the real thing is going to be that much worse. Plus I am not good with nerves at all..

Rory just do as much research as you can mate. A lot of interview questions are fairly standard and you can pre empt most of them by searching on the Net so you don't get caught out with anything. This is even more the case for bigger companies, where they tend to be looking for certain buzz words and you get a lot of standard questions.
Be honest and yourself but if you can pre prepare some practical examples to their questions, like teamwork, meeting deadlines etc. then that helps. Remember every negative can be turned into a positive.
Researching the company, the actual role and making sure you know the job specifics goes without saying.
Also make sure you remember what you put in your CV/application and are able to elaborate on anything in there.
Good luck mate, be confident and you'll do fine... .

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sixmilebridge
Well one big advantage is that my uncle is the manager, and he has helped me a ton so far, but obviously he can't sit with me in the interview so I have to do it myself. I have been doing some research but I need to do a whole lot more. I have received a lot of training in this stuff as I did a personal development course, but this is where I have to put it into practice. I am hoping it doesn't go out the window.
I am naturally not a very confident person, and nerves can take over, that is the real barrier. Any tips on how to deal with nerves?
Thanks a bunch rodders BTW!

Also I need to absolutely nail this interview, I didn't do as well as I could have in the practical, and I am sure they will look at our scores on that. I got 98% in the aptitude tests for english/maths, but that isn't what they are looking for really. They want someone who is good at working with tools and getting their hands dirty.

Dealing with nerves... for me if I am doing a presentation or interview I try and be prepared as possible. Nerves are a good thing if you can just keep them in check I think....same as playing rugby mate
Just give it your best shot. If you prepare the best you can and give it your best effort then there's no such thing as failure... just go for it 100% and if it works out great, if not well its all experience in the bank... its win win mate

Yeah but when I say nerves, for me they are panic attack type nerves haha. Throwing up beforehand etc. Need to work on that. I really want to get this because if I don't, I will probably be enlisting in the army, as this was my best shot for a good job. I've already been to an army exhibition, and got all the info I need on that, but I would rather get this job if I am honest. I think my family would too.
Anyways, thanks for the advice rodders, really appreciate it man.

Rory mate you have 4 days, use them well and then relax and do you best on Thursday. You'll do fine mate, just be yourself.
Not sure what the job is but most standard interview questions will look for examples of when you functioned in a team, dealt with pressure/deadlines, failed on something blah blah (look on the net) etc.
Have a think and pick some examples that you can talk about and as much stuff related to the job spec, theres always clues in the job spec

Rory, be prepared with examples of how you got your hands dirty - if the outcome was good, all the better. Dealing with nerves is not easy, but remember, the interview panel will be aware of the stressful nature of the situation and make allowances. Also, the interview process is expensive - remember that they need to find the right person. You need to KNOW that you are the person they need. Stay calm, stay focused. You are the right man for the job, yes? Prove it to them.

Yeah I have some pretty good stories to tell from my personal development course. Working with members from different communities, helping the homeless, painting 13 flats for a homeless hostel in one week (tiring as hell) etc. Gonna try and throw these things in as much as possible.
Cheers guys, really appreciate this.

Yeah I get super nervous too man... all the time.... Maybe not throwing up but.... my advice is work these nerves out of your system now... I usually find once your stress levels peak then you relax after that.... so try visualisation i.e. picture yourself in the interview and go through the different scenarios, the worst case ones so that you are prepared for them.... that sort of works for me.
Listen to some music that makes you feel good like this, just before https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNwXCqNTEQA&feature=related
You played rugby man right? Life's no different man, just follow your routine, prepare 100% and do your best

Rory if you do these things man then feic the job man, its nothing, it will be their loss not yours if they don't hire you, there's always more jobs. You've done some really positive things with your life so as long as you know that then who gives a shoite what a few blokes wearing suits think.
Walk in with your head up and out with your head up. Embrace the nerves and pressure and be yourself .

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Sixmilebridge
Yeah I used to throw up before my rugby matches too. Annoying as crap, but I just couldn't control the nerves. It confused my team mates as well as myself, because I am a very aggressive player, and I certainly didn't fear the opposition, but I was like scared of my own nerves if that makes sense.
I will be playing rugby again in september so I hope to fix that. And thanks a bunch rodders, I have done some pretty life changing things this year which has made a pretty big impact in my life. Positive and negative. Things have been rough, so this job would REALLY help me out a lot.

Good advice, Rodders.
Rory, I've sat on both sides of the interview desk more times than i care to remember. Believe me, the interview panel are hoping that the next person in the door will be The One to make the decision process easier. Go in believing that you are the one they have been waiting for and they will believe it as well. Great to read that you have done the hands on stuff - that will stand to you, my friend. Believe!

Close enough to it breaker, up at three to be in waterloo for 04:30, few problems already this morning on the network, had a train gap coming out if the strawberry hill depot earlier, that's when it gets caught out in-between two power points, can't draw electricity and can't move. Luckily enough it was early in the day so not to much disruption.

Well we soon realised that we were representing the minority view, and quite significantly so. It was a bit of fun and we made our point.
The most surreal thing was going for a game of touch rugby behind our halls of residence that morning and having 20 plain clothed 'officers', some with dogs, others with guns, materialise from the surrounding trees to watch us. Those present are civil servants, teachers, lawyers, policemen, firemen, TV entertainers, journalists, entrepreneurs etc...and an MP.
Good morning anyway.

Mrs P and others of a sensitive disposition look away now.
Rory, you have to find a big negative event to focus on, preferably something you can genuinely relate to. When that wave of fear washes over you compare your predicament to those involved in that big disaster and it will give you perspective.
And if that doesn't work, a quick Sherman Tank as it releases endorphins in your brain, a natural relaxant.

OK, how about a Sherman Tank... behind the Halls of Residence then?

Alternatively, you could just come right out and tell them.
So Mr. Gallaher how are you today??
A wee bit nervous to be honest, I know how big of an opportunity this is for me and I just want to do my best. I used to get like this before big rugby games as well but I know its a good thing to feel like this because it makes me realise I've something to lose.
So in your first twenty seconds you've already shown them that your honest, you've the ability to work in a team and your determination to succeed. Your half way their brother!!
Oh and try slip it in that you captained the rugby team (even if you didn't,sure a little white lie never hurt anyone). Then you can prove your leadership qualities as well

Good point - the 20 seconds thing, hoog.
Rory... you have the gift of the gab I take it... so use it.
Say something which shows you understand the role and that you are capable and confident of adding something to the company.
Dangle a juicy carrot. Eye contact is important too - just practise (for 3 secs) the calm and assured face with a hint of smile.

That's right - the upside-down equilateral triangle between the eyes and the tip of the nose.
If it's a woman interviewer - avoid the extended isosceles triangle though... until you get to know them better.

I stopped doing those late night 'walks' after I got divorced, Glas.
More of a morning person nowadays. Here we get packs of women (a few guys sprinkled in) doing brisks walks with or without designer pooches.
Also, packs of runners and cyclists (50-100 people!) Quite a funny sight. Everyone seems so bloody fit... or wanting to be!

All he has to do is turn up now...
The only other thing I'll add is this: Speak slowly and deliberately. If you've got too much to say... water it down to the essentials.
If you get too excited it's easy to go off on a tangent. Let the interviewer talk and listen carefully to try and work out what they really want and then affirm their requirements in your answer - with an economy of words.

Morning all, I've just had a wonderful lazy sleep-in.
Go Hoog, someone has to keep the wheels of the economy turning.
Some great advice for Rory, unconventional perhaps, but good nonetheless.
It can help to imagine the interviewer is naked as it gives them an air of vulnerability, and will give you, in turn, a more confident approach.
I wouldn't combine that technique with Glas' advice though.

Morning folks!
Anyone else in work today or is it just me keeping the economy afloat?
Olympic torch coming this way today so that can only mean one thing...... a security alert!

Morning all
Any on the go?
Off to work in a bit, hopefully a less crazy day today than yesterday. Had to arrest someone for running their partner over and then had a stabbing where it subsequently transpired that the person had stabbed themself in the stomach!!!
Hoping for a more peaceful day today.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend!
