Just got the press release for the squad so thought I would start a thread for it.
England name 12-man squad for third Investec Test match against West Indies
The England selectors today named a 12-man squad for the third Investec Test match against West Indies commencing Thursday June 7 at Edgbaston.
Pace bowler James Anderson is the only omission from the squad selected for both previous Investec Test matches against West Indies. Anderson received treatment during the course of the second Test for a minor quad problem and it has been decided that missing the final Test in the series will give the 29 year old an opportunity to overcome several minor injuries.
England won the second Test in the three match series by nine wickets at Trent Bridge to secure a series win having won the first Test at Lord’s by five wickets. Preparations for the final Investec Test in the series will begin in Edgbaston on Tuesday.
National selector, Geoff Miller, said: “We have been made to work hard for our two victories so far and are delighted to have secured the series, however we know that we will need to continue to play some good cricket if we want a third win against the West Indies this week.
“James Anderson will miss this Investec Test as we look to manage his workload ahead of a busy period of cricket this summer and beyond, a decision which is in the best interests of the team and James himself.”
England squad – 3rd Investec Test
Andrew Strauss (Middlesex) (Captain)
Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Ian Bell (Warwickshire)
Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Alastair Cook (Essex)
Steven Finn (Middlesex)
Graham Onions (Durham)
Kevin Pietersen (Surrey)
Matt Prior (Sussex)
Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire)
Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire)

Tonking down with rain in Brum at the moment, very little chance of play today.
Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
The weekend looks ok. A two day test.
Good toss to win? I suppose field first and attack like mad.

Might as well rest Broad as well and give both Finn and Onions a go as this is only going to be a maximum of a three day test which probably won't get a result.

Dro........rest Bairstow and add Finn & Onions.....bowl them out for 90, and Cook and Co can bat with a thimble and still win it in two days.....

If it turns into a one-day test, perhaps Strauss and Sammy should do some underhand deals and agree to play a limited overs type of one innings test match in the spirit of the game, like what Hansie Cronje and Nasser Hussain agreed about in the final test match of the 1999 England V SA test series.

Playing 5 bowlers won't help us bowl them out any quicker...
And surely big Bres has to be dropped/rested/rotated/given time away to work on his handicap, as when this Test inevitably is a draw it will ruin his 100% record!

Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
If Engalnd are put in to bat first, will they play their normal game, or will they go for quick runs, and try and knock up 400 before getting 10 overs in at the Windies before the close (I'm assuming we'll get the full 98 overs in...).
Can't see Cook or Trott throwing their bat round somehow.....

Bowl first and see if you can knock them over for under 200 basically.

Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
With so much time having been lost in this match I think the only way for a result now is if the team batting first is skittled out. Hence I hope WI bat first.

Right win the toss and field. Then bowl the Windies out before lunch for a score of 50 odd. Bat like it's a T20 for the rest of the day and declare at the end of the day with a healthy lead. Bowl the Windies out again inside 2 days. Done and done. Come on England!

We're bowling first. Broad is now dropped as Onions and Finn play. England viewing this as an opportunity to have a look at some player now I suspect.

Interesting, both Broad and Anderson rested so Onions and Finn get a game. This won't be a draw - Bresnan's in the team!

As I say, England have decided they might as well use whats left of this match to look at some backup players.

West Indies batting line up does look very weak. Especially if the ball is nipping around. Hopefully Finn and Onions open the bowling and get a couple of wickets each

From what Strauss said, looks like Onions got the nod over Finn (before they decided to rest Broad)....Interesting....

No Chanderpaul, so unless Marlon Samuels somehow manage to extend his new found consistency and if the weather doesn't come in much for the next couple of days at least, England has a fair chance to have another clean sweep to get going in a big summer.

Good first over from Onions. Some movement, decent pace. Good to see him back, after that horrific injury.

Pretty sure the West Indies openers wouldn't like facing Finn coming in at 6ft 7in and 90mph

Tim B can often surprise you, but I thought Steve Finn should have had that new ball.

Nothing special from Bresnan's first over, pretty average with pace, and no serious movement either.

Anyone else suffering from low interest levels in this? 2-0 up, not playing our best team, appalling forecast, Euros have started. I'd say my interest levels are about 10% of normal!

This has to be one of the better starts from the WI openers in the series so far. Their partnership is on to double digits, and more importantly, those runs have come through some decent, confident shots, unlike the usual edgy way.

A couple of reasons for that I reckon msp. No Anderson who has had the openers on toast this series. Also much less pressure given this is an almost certain draw whatever happens, allowing them to play with more freedom.

I like Powell more than Barath I think he has potential but those were some of the worst drives I have seen

Onions and Bresnan have found their rhythm now, Barath and Powell not looking so comfortable anymore.

We are into the 5th over, and the West Indies number 4 or 5 haven't arrived in the middle as yet!!. Not even the number 3 for that matter!.

Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
Nothing much interesting from Bresnan so far, not much seam, and ever since he returned from injury, his pace has never really reached the high 130 mark consistently that had made him a pretty good bowler in Australia and even on the flat roads of the sub-continent earlier.
But Onions has moved the ball both ways at decent pace. That last over was very good.

Onions is generating impressive pace along with the movement, consistently up in the late 130s this over!. Would be interesting to see what Finn can do here.

WI not scoring many at the moment. I've said it before, I feel they don't rotate the strike as much as they should. Onions and Bresnan bowling well but still not much happening off the pitch. Here's Finn

and it's another maiden, though Finn doesn't make him play enough. Pace in the mid-80s, he'll be looking to get that up a bit...

England lose their first review. Looked close, but height always going to be an issue and hewkeye duly has it clipping the top of the stumps.

Finn beats Powell four times outside off in that over. No luck for England so far.

excellent first hour for WI that, Powell and Barath have rode their luck at times but have fought well. Barath in particular has looked pretty solid.

Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
lovely bowling from Finn, so unlucky not to get Barath there. Two short balls force him back, before the fuller one has him stuck on the crease, but Barath's inside edge is just over the stumps and just avoids Prior's dive.

Re: 3rd Test England v West Indies
Bresnan strikes! England deserve that. Powell has looked a little loose at times outside off and he nicks one to Swann who just about clings on. With Samuels the only experience in the middle-order due in at 6, can England prise open the hatch?
