face of the company?
I could probably give you an answer (at least between two) for all the subsequent 15 & previous 15 years but who & why would you say was the guy in 1997?
Bret Hart - He highest paid most decorated & longest serving wrestler on the roster
Shawn Michaels - Being groomed in 96 as Bret Hart's long term successor
Undertaker - Most successful gimmick ever. Won world title at this years Wrestlemania
Steve Austin - Coolest most exciting guy on the roster, fans believe in & looks destined for the top

It had to be Shawn Michaels, in his prime and the right time. Austin was still a year too early and Bret Hart was on his way down from being the man.

Saying that though Bret was gone before the year ended & was injured for a while too... Then there's Austin who was sidelined with a broken neck

I went with Bret Hart because in my opinion he was the focal point for most of the main storylines throughout the year and always had a major presence on RAW. From his meltdown after not winning the Rumble to the Wrestlemania 13 double turn to forming the Hart Foundation to the feuds with the Undertaker and Shawn Michaels, Bret was invariably at the forefront of the big storylines.
