The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Jedburgh
First topic message reminder :
Sláinte and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made it's way to Jedburgh, home of Greig Laidlaw who kicked the winning points for Scotland on Tuesday night.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of all of the June Internationals debutants hanging over the bar.

Personally I blame Declan Kidney for the Irish anthem shambles. His backing track for Ireland's Call is pure Plastic Paddy cheesy schlock. He's chosen to lead into the anthems with a synth-pop beat that sounds like it was made on a Fisher Price keyboard and a cringeworthy guitar slide that could have been lifted from the music of a sexually frustrated 45 year-old geography teacher; utterly incongruous when juxtaposed with the gravity our oppositions anthems are generally treated with.
How did Declan Kidney get the job of arranging the backing track in the first place? Is it because he has experience co-ordinating the amateur choir in his local parish- why were more qualified musicians from Ulster and Leinster overlooked for the job?
Everything is Declan Kidneys fault. He missed a lot of tackles out there today too.
Bad Deccie

First test done, result went as I thought, just really hope the injuries in the Wales backs aren't too bad. My poor Georgie and Scott
Utterly pants fringe defense needs massive improvement for us.

Well done Aus. Congrats Breaker
Wales will be better for the game but as you say Dreamer the injuries might be a factor.
Wasn't Genia sublime today. And without Ferris there to give him a lift as well
I'll miss England later so good luck Hound, Swanny and any other English who are looking in.
Oh and good luck Biltong as well

Rory, I hope you have enjoyed the backrow play this morning and particularly opensides of the quality of McCaw, Pocock, Warbs and SOB. Great performances from all of them.
Thought Lydiate played well first half and faded. Higginbotham was immense for Aus.

Thanks dreamer & Rava
I'm just relieved it's over. I was impressed with the speedy ball at times but also frustrated by the usual mistakes made after good build ups. Wales will improve I think... so it's still a cracking series ahead.
Cheers Rodders!

I have indeed! I hope you saw my thread all about the irish back row options in the club section!
SOB in particular made 18 tackles!

So for all Dreamers talk before the match, turned out Australia were better. I actually thought Wales and England would win today.

Afternoon.
I'm not going to moan, but Duw, that hurt. Glad to see Beck come off the bench (although not due to Williams' injury. Hope he's OK). He'll get better. *sigh* there's always next time. And on the upside it was great to see the regs and watch two good matches on a big screen instead of the PC. Every cloud...

Don't worry, you'll be back Cari.
Wales are always a very dangerous side and the next game will be no different. Oz were more switched on tonight. (We were pretty desperate too!) There will be more twists and turns I feel.
There's too much blydi sport, isn't there?. A long day for me already and a feast of football still ahead! This cricket is killing me too...

So apparently Ireland are now the worst side to ever play the game and all players we thought were very good about about 8:29 this morning are now all shoite. Anyway, nearly done a preview of Ireland v Croatia.

Duff's in, Trap named it yesterday. I would pick McClean and drop MuckGeady.
Will give you a preview seeing as I know you all really want to see it (please note: I haven't finished it, haven't done spell/grammar checks on it mysel, nor have the writing team)
It's fair to say that Giovanni Trapattoni's Ireland side were not expected to get to the Euros. Their group looked relatively easy on paper, Russia were the only clear heavyweights, but Ireland did struggle against some of the lesser sides at times. They struggled at home against Macedonia and Slovakia, most notably. Yet under "Trap" as he is known by the Irish faithful, Ireland have become quite a resolute side. In the 2 campaigns he has presided over (2010 World Cup Qualification and Euro 2012 qualification), Ireland have only lost two games. They lost to France in Dublin during their World Cup playoff, and to Russia in the Aviva Stadium. Both games were lost by a solitary goal. They did look outclassed in both matches (Russia raced to a 3 nil lead before Ireland clawed 2 goals back) they still managed to stay competitive. In what is quite a tough group, Ireland will need to harness their ability to stay in the game if they are to achieve success.
Ireland are going to field the following team: Given; O'Shea, St Ledger, Dunne, Ward; Duff, Whelan, Andrews, McGeady; Doyle, Keane
Ireland will line up in a 4-4-2 formation ad they have done throughout Trapattoni's tenure. This will likely cause them problems throughout the tournament, and Croatia will also cause some problems. With their formation, Ireland are often left short in midfield, the majority of teams in the current era operate with 3 or more in the middle of the park. It puts a lot of pressure on both Whelan and Andrews as well as the centre backs, who may have to deal with an oncoming midfielder and a troublesome striker. Slaven Billic, Croatia manager, is somewhat flexible in his formations, he is known to operate 4-1-3-2, 4-2-3-1 or the classic 4-4-2. Croatia play good attacking football, but this can often be part of their down fall Croatia, have lacked a decent defensive midfielder since the retirement of Niko Kovac and at times, Croatia can get overran in midfield. In attack, they can be breath taking. Luka Modric is a name all Premier League fans will know, the Tottenham man, is a fantastic playmaker with the ability to grab a few goals. Darijo Srna, the right sided midfielder or wing back, is electrifying going forward and is also a decent defender, Damien Duff and Stephen Ward will have to keep a close eye on the wideman. Vedran Corluka is one of the more recognisable names of the Croatian defence. He spent 3 seasons at Tottenham before going on loan to Bayern Leverkusen this year. He could end up filling in at centre back but he is traditionally a left or right back. Croatia's defence isn't great, in a group containing Greece (not exactly attacking!), Latvia, Malta, Israel and Georgia (Latvia, Malta and Israel are quite poor, Georgia are improving but still quite weak), Croatia conceded 7 goals. They finished second in their group .Croatia also came through the playoffs to get to the Championships, beating Turkey on their way to Poland. They showed signs of improvement in the playoffs though, beating Turkey 3-0 over two legs.

Howdy, Cari.
Breaker, you have a gem in Will Genia (as if you needed me to tell you!). What disappointed me was that we weren't wise to him sniping around the fringes. (The world knows he's a sniping scrum half!) That's a huge reconnaissance failure on Shaun Edwards's part.

You made half-breaks in midfield, Mrs P - if you can get players on the shoulder, you can cause those pesky New Zealanders some problems. The other thing is the concession of penalties. But God bless these three-Test series, there's the chance of redemption!
How did England steal that?! Stunning defence!
